For the 12th consecutive year, the Wildcats on Wednesday took home the city wrestling championship ? albeit with a tinge of sadness.
?This is the last time we?ll wrestle as Springstowne,? said Michael Phannavong, a 12-year-old sixth-grader who has been wrestling for the last year.
Springstowne Middle School will move this fall from its current location at 2833 Tennessee St. to the campus of Hogan High School and will be renamed Hogan Middle School.
The Wildcats are known for their ferocious wrestling, particularly by the girls.
?You have people who support us,? said Frances Nogoy, a seventh-grader and wrestling team member.
But the Wildcats aren?t the only ones at Wednesday?s all-middle school tournament who were disappointed by the Vallejo school board?s decision to relocate their school.
Vallejo Middle School will close at the end of the year, with its campus being occupied by the new ninth-grade program for Vallejo High School.
Zachary Morton, a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Vallejo Middle School, will end up returning to the middle school campus next year as a Vallejo High School freshman.
Like many at Springstowne, Zachary is a passionate wrestler. ?I tried a bunch of other sports; I wasn?t very good at them. I came here to wrestle. ? I just love it,? Zachary said.
Wednesday?s tournament, the 16th annual Greater Vallejo Recreation District City Wrestling Championships, has been held at the Springstowne campus since its
inception, said Anthony Kenaston, sports coordinator for GVRD.
One of Springstowne?s wrestling coaches, Peter Trave, recalled the first year of the all-city championship that he helped start with Coach Jason Guiducci.
?It was really basic because our kids were really raw,? Trave said.
That rawness, however, is a far cry from the wrestling programs Trave, Guiducci and the other schools? coaches have built throughout the years.
While it is unclear where next year?s championships will be held ? perhaps at a community center rather than a school ? Kenaston said GVRD is committed to making sure the tournament continues. ?It?s huge,? Kenaston said.
