Our Trip to Aviator Sports and Events Center

aviator sports & events centerThis weekend Z.E.N and I had the opportunity to visit Aviator Sports and Events Center in Southeast Brooklyn. It is located at Floyd Bennett Field.

First a little history about Floyd Bennet Field. Floyd Bennett Field was New York City?s first municipal airport. It was built sometime between 1928 and 1931 and quickly became the preferred launching site for record-setting flights by Howard Hughes, Amelia Earhart, Wiley Post and other aviation pioneers. The airport was decommissioned in 1972. Most of the structure has remained intact and Aviator Sports is actually housed in 4 of the airport?s original hangars.

Upon arriving at Aviator, we were given a tour. The place is huge. This 170,000 square foot facility is comprised of an 18,000 square foot indoor area that houses two hardwood basketball courts; two indoor turf fields; two NHL regulation size ice rinks; a 15,000 square foot gymnastics and dance training center; a 4,500 square foot fitness center; two outdoor turf fields, a 35 foot tall rock climbing wall; and a food court.

During our tour, we were also informed about their summer camp programs. They have many different camp options available for children of all ages. they are holding open houses every Saturday until June 17th, 2011 so make sure to visit if you are interested.

We then got to see Silly Dilly Band perform. The Silly Dilly Band is a children?s musical band that performs live high energy, interactive music shows for the entire family. It was a very cute show. Z.E.N. though, got bored towards the end of it.

After the show we had lunch. Lunch was served in one of their smaller party rooms. Yes, they also offer fully customizable parties for all ages, with sports activities led by certified instructors.

Next up, the kids got to played for a little while in the child drop off center and then they had an hour-long gymnastics lesson. Z.E.N. really enjoyed gymnastics.

Afterwards, we had the opportunity to do rock climbing or to go ice skating. Z.E.N. didn?t want to do either so we left at that point.

I must say that our visit to Aviator Sports was great. Everyone there was super friendly and we had a great time.

The only negative point that I wanted to mention is that it?s not that easy to get there. You can take the Q35 bus there, but I?ve been told that service on that line is pretty spotty and not very reliable.
