Cuomo Hires New Communications Chief

Gov. Andrew Cuomo this morning announced Allison Gollust, a former NBC News public relations executive, will take over as the director of communications.

?It is an honor to welcome Allison to our team and I thank her for bringing her talents to New York state government,? said Governor Cuomo. ?Allison is a consummate professional who has a wealth of experience in communications and management. Her extraordinary work ethic, intellect and dedication will be essential to this position and I look forward to working with her.?

Gollust from 2005 through 2009 was the senior vice president for NBC News Communications. According to the Cuomo?s office, she had an expansive portfolio, overseeing communications for MSNBC, the financial channel CNBC and the Weather Channel. She also had oversight for the vaunted broadcast arm of NBC, including Today, Nightly News, Dateline and Meet The Press.

She replaces the departing Rich Bamberger, the occasionally frazzled but friendly communications director who specialized in TV production and presentation, having come from the broadcast arena as well. Bamberger has been a Cuomo hand since 2008, working with him in the attorney general?s press shop ? including a year and a half of 70 percent approval ratings since Cuomo settled into the governor?s office.

?Bam? as he is known by reporters and?flacks alike,?is leaving on good terms; taking an unspecified job in the private sector.

Bamberger is expected to leave his post at the end of the year and assist Gollust in the transition.
