New poll: Majority prefer marriage for gay and lesbian New Jersey ...

Rainbow triangleFour out of five New Jersey voters are now in favor of legal recognition of same-?sex unions. This is?according to a new?Public Policy Poll (PPC) released today. The poll says?81?percent prefer legal recognition over no recognition for LGBT couples. Voters prefer same-sex marriage 47???42 percent, when asked about marriage equality as a simple yes or no question. They?prefer legal civil marriage over civil unions?when that component is added to the mix.?

When asked. "Do you think same-?sex marriage should be legal or illegal?, "voters chose legal 47 percent?over illegal, 42 percent.

When asked if "gay couples should be allowed to legally marry, or gay couples should be allowed to form civil unions but not legally marry, or there should be no legal recognition of a gay couple's relationship?,?"voters picked marriage 41 percent, civil unions 40 percent,?and neither, 17 percent.

Meanwhile, New Jersey's Republican Governor Chris Christie has stated several times in the past two years that he will not sign a same-?sex marriage bill into law while he is in office.

The poll shows that the 30-45 age group most strongly supports?same-sex marriage. Among this age group 55%?support same-sex marriage and 35% are opposed.?Politicker NJ says the poll indicates that voters are prepared to re-elect Democratic majorities in the Legislature.?

By a 52-39 margin, voters say they would choose the Democrat over the Republican in their local district. Democrats and Republicans are united behind their parties, while independents are split, giving Democrats the edge in Democratic-leaning New Jersey,"?

PPP surveyed 480 New Jersey voters from July 15 to 18. The margin of error for the survey is +/-4.5%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization
