How big is Christmas for mobile app developers? For one San Francisco Bay Area-based game maker, it meant 2 million downloads in a single day. Christmas is unsurprisingly the biggest day of the year for many app makers as consumers unwrap brand-new phones and rush to the store to test out new apps. Storm8, which is a bootstrapped casual game developer out of Redwood Shores, saw four times the number of downloads they normally experience on a Tuesday. They also saw about 2.5 million hours of gameplay that day and up to 4.5 times the level of average revenue per daily active users, as consumers spent more on in-app purchases. Holiday-themed items like virtual Christmas trees and snow globes were the most popular. The 4x increase that Storm8 saw is consistent with what other analytics companies have picked up over the holidays. Flurry, an analytics company that tracks more than 260,000 apps, reported that device activations more than quadrupled to 17.4 million on Christmas Day. They saw a similar quadrupling effect last Christmas. On top of that, app downloads more than doubled to 328 million on Christmas, they reported. How does Storm8′s 2 million downloads in one day compare to other developers? Well, when Instagram released its Android version, it saw 1 million downloads on the first day and 5 million downloads over the first six days for the app. Rovio also said last year that it was seeing about 1 million downloads a day for its Angry Birds franchise. As for Storm8, it’s a casual game developer that was co-founded by a few early former Facebook employees. They’ve grown to have more than 150 employees and 400 million downloads without taking any venture funding (as a matter of choice and as the funding environment for gaming developers has changed substantially over the last year).Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/TeVT3QuaoMk/

Orange County's environment for small businesses and startups has gone from terrible to uncertain in the past few years.
It's Your Business asked eight Orange County experts who are long-time advisers of small-business owners to predict what awaits local entrepreneurs in 2013.
Entrepreneurs could use some good news. They may or may not get it, depending on which expert is sharing a vision for the next 12 months. Some predict blue skies; others forecast gloom. They predict entrepreneurs will find opportunity regardless of circumstances.
These experts, who have run businesses in the past, don't disagree as sharply as it may first appear. Some are more optimistic about near-term improvements than others. They acknowledge the lingering weight of a deep recession and slow recovery but also remind entrepreneurs of opportunity in every circumstance.
Here's what they had to say:
1. Dennis Wright, president SCORE-Orange County chapter
I'm optimistic about the coming year. Orange County businesses will have much stronger sales resulting largely from pent-up demand. Things break and need to be replaced. Businesses eventually upgrade their equipment. Kids outgrow their clothes. I can't say 2013 will be a banner year, but I do believe the trend line is apt to spike sharply upward starting in March or early April.
I was mentored by someone who saw opportunity everywhere. In his mind, 8 percent unemployment simply meant 92 percent were working. What concerns me most are good people blaming everything but their own decisions and actions for poor results. Businesses will succeed because the owner or principals have a well thought out plan and execute it."
2. Loreen Gilbert, president National Association of Women Business Owners-Orange County
Business owners hope for a stable economy in 2013; they expect the challenge of higher taxes both from the California Prop. 30 and changes in the federal tax code. Overall, the sentiment going into 2013 is pro-growth in their businesses and cautionary with regards to the overall economy. The low interest-rate environment will continue in 2013 and therefore business owners are utilizing this opportunity to fix their lending costs at a low rate.
Business owners are feeling "wealthy" again because of the reversal of the housing market erosion, as well as a strong stock and bond market in 2012. As a result, business owners have been willing to spend money. However, their spending has been leaning more toward one-time commitments such as equipment purchases or retirement plan contributions versus the long-term spending decision on hiring more staff.
3. Richard Sudek, director, Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship & Business Ethics, Chapman University
I'm not optimistic that the economy will get good right away. No matter how good the outcome of the President and Congress dealing with the fiscal cliff, little will improve for 10 to 12 months. Entrepreneurs are being limited by uncertainty. A lot of companies have pent-up cash waiting on the sidelines. Some certainty will allow companies to plan and adjust and that will free up opportunities.
Having said that, here are some companies that started in a recession: General Electric, Kraft, Hewlett Packard, Merck, Chevron, Johnson & Johnson, Disney, J.P Morgan. People think a recession is the worst time to start a company, but if you can survive in recession, you will prosper when things get better.
Another thing: The way companies are launched has fundamentally changed. It used to be that you planned, raised $50 million and then went and executed the plan. Now you raise a few hundred thousand dollars, test along the way and then raise more money. This lean startup approach is here to stay.
4. Jack Bicer, founder and chairman, Tech Biz Connection
We will hit another mini-recession; companies will tighten their belts even more. The first two quarters of 2013 will be a difficult business climate. Start-up and early-stage investment capital will be even more scarce.
The good factor is that our Orange County entrepreneurs are a resilient bunch. Smart companies will invest in new projects and get ready to boom when the fear and uncertainty subsides, and the economy starts growing again. Existing companies will get even better at succeeding in difficult business environments. Smart startups and incubator-based companies will collaborate closer and take advantage of each other's strengths.
5. Edward Hart, director, Center for Family Business, Cal State Fullerton
I expect 2013 will look a lot like 2012, people starting to regain confidence in the economy, more jobs being created and more investment in entrepreneurs.
My biggest fear for 2013 stems from conversations I have had with several small to medium-sized companies throughout Orange County. With Obamacare on the horizon, many companies will not be able to afford to provide the same level of healthcare benefits for their employees as they have been accustomed to providing. Several companies are already beginning to either lay off, cut hours or reduce many positions from full-time to part time. If this happens, my fear is that the unemployment and underemployment rates will rise.
6. John B. Jackson, director, Center for Entrepreneurship, Cal State Fullerton
While the federal government officials may fear a "fiscal cliff" with increased budget deficits, small-business owners may face a "fiscal prairie." The outlook is flat, dry and dusty. For the small-business owners who survived the last four years, most are out of cash, have little access to new capital, have downsized to bare bones and remain desperate for revenue.
Because of this fiscal prairie, small-business owners are selling their businesses in record numbers. For entrepreneurs with cash and courage, it is a buyers' market. Many of the small businesses are priced at salvage value. There are bargains galore.
7. Leila Mozaffari, director, Orange County Small Business Development Center
The economy is a factor in a business' success, but it doesn't have to be all bad. In an economic downturn, your competitors will be weakened allowing you to nab good employees who need a job and good customers who need your products or services. Previously owned equipment in good condition may be more readily available and valued priced. Commercial landlords tend to be more willing to negotiate favorable terms."
Small-business owners who are open to continuously examining and evolving their business model, practices, products, services and target customers tend to be more successful. For these small businesses, 2013 looks much rosier than for others.
What I hope for in 2013 is that more small-business owners will want to define their business and less will be defined by the economy or other external factor.
8. Ash Kumra, president, Tech Coast Venture Network and author of "Confessions from an Entrepreneur Volume 1"
The government will help motivate more local business and education leaders to give back locally. A great example is the Startup America Partnership (funded by the Kauffman Foundation and Case Foundation, both private nonprofits) to grow high-growth entrepreneurship communities. It now has more than 10,000 startups, 1,400 of them in California.
Cooperation and social good will grow with investors, nonprofits, community leaders, entrepreneurs, education programs and corporations working together for entrepreneurship and business growth. Any group that believes its way is the only way will lose its luster and interest.

Dec. 30, 2012 ? How can a square meter of meadow contain tens of species of plants? And what factors determine the number of species that live in an ecosystem? Science journal has defined this as one of the 25 most important unresolved questions in science, both for its importance in understanding nature and due to the value of natural ecosystems for humankind. The value of goods and services provided by natural ecosystems is estimated to exceed the GDP of our planet.
For over 50 years, conventional ecological theories have predicted that the number of species that can coexist in a given area increases with the heterogeneity of the environmental conditions in the habitat. This premise was examined in a study conducted by research students Omri Allouche and Michael Kalyuzhny, guided by Prof. Ronen Kadmon from the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in collaboration with Prof. Gregorio Moreno-Rueda and Prof. Manuel Pizarro from Universidad de Granada.
The researchers claim that in a heterogeneous environment -- where there are many different types of habitats -- there are fewer resources and less suitable area available to each species, making them more vulnerable to local extinction. This leads to the hypothesis that excessive habitat heterogeneity may actually reduce the number of species.
This hypothesis was examined using mathematical models and empirical analyses of natural ecosystems. Its predictions were examined with a meta-analysis of tens of datasets of plant and animal species from various localities worldwide.
Both the theoretical results and the data analyses supported the researchers' hypothesis that habitat heterogeneity may increase the rate of species extinctions and therefore reduce the number of species that inhabit the ecosystem.
These findings are very important for the conservation of biodiversity, since the current practice is to conserve areas of maximal habitat heterogeneity and even to take measures to increase habitat heterogeneity. The study shows that this conventional approach may lead to negative results, especially in the case of landscapes of limited size, which is typical of nature reserves.
Ecosystems and the species they consist of are under increasing pressure of human activity. In these conditions, skillful and intelligent management of natural landscapes is vital. This study provides scientists and policy makers with important insights for the selection and management of areas for conservation.
The study, Area-heterogeneity tradeoff and the diversity of ecological communities, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. It was funded by the Israel Science Foundation and by Israel's Ministry of Science and Technology.
