Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys Back to Being a Meaningful Rivalry?

Matthew Emmons- US Presswire
The Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys take on one another in a ?winner take all? game Sunday night in the nation?s capital. Over the years these two teams have maintained one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports. Whether Dallas and Washington are having winning seasons or not, when they meet all eyes are glued to the television.
What makes Sunday night?s game so empowering is the fact that they both have winning records in week 17, which doesn?t happen often. Both teams started the season rough, Redskins at 3-6 and the Cowboys at 3-5. They have both gotten on a roll and have positioned themselves for a playoff run, which seemed so distant at one point and time.
The Redskins and Cowboys met in the NFC Championship twice, in 1972 and 1983, and the Redskins won both games. Those may be two of the biggest games in these teams? history versus each other. However, this will be the biggest game between the two in recent history, and some of the younger Cowboys/Redskins fans may have never seen a game of this magnitude being played against one another.
In their first meeting this season on Thanksgiving Day, families sat together enjoying their lovely meals and witnessed Robert Griffin III and the Redskins put on an absolute show. RGIII wasn?t afraid to step into the rivalry in full effect, as he threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns? This kid hasn?t seemed too shy when the bright lights are shining, which may not be a good sign for the Cowboys come Sunday night.?Redskins jumped out to a 28-6 lead in that game, while the Cowboys made a run late to make it interesting. However, Washington held on and won 38-31.That game may have caught Dallas off guard, as they were accustomed to winning on Thanksgiving Day.
As young as a lot of the players are on these two teams, this rivalry may have stepped it up a bit and renewed itself.
The Redskins are younger overall, but Cowboys? players WR Dez Bryant, RB Demarco Murray, and CB Morris Claiborne will be around for a while. RGIII, RB Alfred Morris, WR Pierre Garcon, LB?s Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo are all in their 20?s for the Redskins and should be included in this rivalry for quite some time as well.
The Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears, and Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Redskins. These are maybe the top rivalries that we have in the NFL. A rivalry earns it?s name because of the history, the blood shed and meaningful games that?s played between two teams.
Washington and Dallas have earned those stripes, and get to add another one of those games to the history books come Sunday.

Retail boss says change coming for Christchurch - Stuff
The woman who has led prominent Christchurch department store Ballantynes through the city's earthquakes says the "momentum of change" is starting to sweep across the quake-hit city.
Ballantynes managing director Mary Devine has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to business.
Devine was appointed to her Ballantynes role shortly before the February 2011 earthquake, becoming the first female and the first non-family managing director since 1938.
She served as the chief executive of retailer EziBuy before taking on the job, and has been on the Canterbury Business Leaders Group executive.
Devine also served as a board member of New Zealand Global Women, and played a key role in developing the organisation's women in leadership programme.
Devine said she was "surprised and humbled" when notified of the honour.
"I was shocked: I had to read it [the letter] a couple of times actually to check that it was true."
She had faced "major challenges" since starting at Ballantynes.
She rated getting the department store ready for trading after the earthquake one of her career highlights.
"It's been all hands on deck from day one, and I'm very proud of the great work that the team has done."
The Re:Start container mall, made up of small shipping container shops around Ballantynes, had also been a major success.
Devine said the mall's success could provide a blueprint for the future of the retail precinct.
"It's something that was achieved in a very unique way, and it's very innovative on a global scale."
She had enjoyed her work with NZ Global Women, and felt the group had helped to increase the number of women leaders while drawing attention to the issue of gender representation.
"We have a strong voice at the table now, especially on the issue of diversity on boards."
Devine said 2013 would be "an exciting year" for Ballantynes and the city as rebuilding plans gathered pace and the future shape of the city started to take hold.
"We've done a lot of hard yards, but we can definitely feel the momentum of change," she said.

Kevin Smith hints 'Clerks 3' would be last film

By Alyssa Toomey, E! Online
Kevin Smith is hoping to leave the movie biz on a high note. The director has revealed plans to release what he expects will be his last directorial effort: "Clerks 3," the final installment in his slacker saga that began with the 1994 flick that put the indie filmmaker on the map.
Smith's announcement follows the news that his hockey flick "Hit Somebody" will now be turned into a six-part miniseries on an unannounced network.
Southwest Airlines apologizes to Kevin Smith
"So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III #TaDa," he tweeted.
2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the original film, which was shot in a convenience store and continues to have a cult following. The movie is responsible for launching Smith's career, and he'd later go on to direct indie staples like "Chasing Amy," "Dogma" and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back."
"Instead of letting people [guess] for years, I said, 'I will do 'Clerks 3,' and by 2014 it is the 20th anniversary. We're going to mark it somehow, God willing, with 'Clerks 3,'" Smith said in an interview with "Good Day LA." "We need Jeff Anderson to come back and say yes."

Coach's Corner: Looking back on local sports highlights of 2012
The end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013. It's the "Coach's Corner Year in Review" and predictions and hopes for the next 365 days of local sports. The Old Coach has failed miserably during the past year in his New Year resolution to master some of the complexities of the modern world. I've been outsmarted by my smartphone, rooked by my Nook, effaced on Facebook, and, I confess, a twit when it comes to Twitter. Not only that, who the heck is Kim Kardashian? Thank goodness, I can rely on the world of sports to provide some sense of sanity.
Are you off your rocker, Coach? This past year has been full of sad stories about Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno, NHL lockout, murders, suicides, Lance Armstrong cheating, New Orleans Saints Bountygate, countless drug suspensions, and a slew of college football players who have been removed from bowl-bound teams for unspecified breaking of team rules. Do you call that sanity?
OK. You've got me there. But "Coach's Corner" is going to counter with some of the many positive, feel-good stories that happened this year that deserve our attention. As we bring down the curtain on 2012, let's focus on some of the events and people that should have given our local sports fans something to sing about (fade to music in background: "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things"). So here is a "shout out" to all those athletes, high school, college, and pro, who did things the right way for the right reasons. Notice I used the term "shout out" instead of recognize in an effort to be more in tune with the times.
Frederick County high school players, coaches, parents, and communities can take pride in the quality of our sports programs. Once again, our teams and individuals have collected their share of state titles and have done so while still maintaining a good balance between athletics, academics, and community involvement. If you know any of the following athletes, be sure to give them a pat on the back (that's an old school term) for representing our county with their hard-earned achievements.
2012 Maryland State Champion Teams (6): Middletown football and girls soccer, Catoctin boys cross country, Brunswick boys soccer, Thomas Johnson boys indoor track and girls outdoor track.
2012 Maryland State Runners-up Teams (8): TJ boys cross country and boys outdoor track, Urbana golf and boys soccer, Brunswick girls soccer and boys outdoor track, Walkersville boys indoor track, Linganore softball.
2012 Individual State Champions (38), Name and school (number of titles this year): David Dorsey-Catoctin, Emily Mulhern-Urbana, Justine Kalisz (2)-Urbana, Tamara Ovejera (2)-TJ, Braden Bruning-Linganore, Jeremy Lewis/Eric Villenueva/Austin Hayslett/Frederick Ugast-Urbana, Avon Davey (2)-TJ, Savannah Steinly-Catoctin, Hannah Stone (3)-Cat, Emma King (2)-Oakdale, Megan Mounts-Walkersville, Scott Berryman-Walkersville, Chris Lamont/Karl Sasse/Evan Kolovich (2)/Timmy Krajewski-Oakdale, Mitchell Reynolds-Frederick, Philippa Rogers-Oakdale, Mathew Walchuck/Eric Darby/Andrew Pressly/Zachary Lilley (2)-Middletown, Austin Wenzlaff-Tuscarora, Judd Ziegler-Middletown, Rachel Watkins (2)/Brie Thompson/Mary Mowoe/Krystal Clarke-Tuscarora, Breana Brownfield-TJ, Patrick DuBoyce-Linganore, Hassan Omar-TJ, Megan Kelly-Middletown, TJ Gamble-Walkersville, Zach Welch-Middletown, Daniel Trettel-Brunswick, Luke Campbell (3)-Brunswick.
As you see, every one of our 10 high schools has had teams or individuals who are the best in their sport in Maryland this year. That is a credit to the men and women who spend countless hours for the purpose of not only helping our athletes compete at the highest level, but helping them develop into responsible young men and women. Be sure to thank a coach for the coach's dedication. Coaches appreciate a little positive feedback every now and then. And athletes, be sure to thank your parents for all the sacrifices that they have made in supporting your efforts.
What can we expect in 2013 from our Frederick County athletes? The same high caliber of play that has made our area a mecca for college coaches who are out to recruit the best students for their programs. The same pursuit of the highest goals in sportsmanship and in achievement on the field and in the classroom. The Old Coach predicts that many of our top athletes will be awarded opportunities beyond high school. Even if an athlete doesn't participate after graduating from high school, almost all individuals who take part in extra-curricular sports programs will benefit immensely from their experiences. Discipline, team work, time management, and being goal-oriented are just a few of the skills they will learn.
Now, let's take a quick look at 2012 on the local college scene. This past year was a mixed bag for Maryland Terp fans. Mark Turgeon's first season after replacing legendary Gary Williams as head basketball coach was a season of adjustment. Turgeon only had a handful of scholarship players and had to establish his own way of doing things. He was able to bring in 7-foot Ukrainian Alex Len, who, so far this season looks like a future NBA prospect. Turgeon, the disciplinarian, ran off one-man-show Terrell Stoglin and has recruited a high-quality group of players who are buying into the coach's team style of play. After a 17--15 2012 season, they are off to a 11--1 start, albeit against smaller, less-talented schools, but they are full of potential. The Old Coach sees the Terps as a real threat in the ACC by the end of the season, with a legitimate shot at making the NCAA tournament field.
And don't write off Maryland football just yet. The 2012 season started with a lot of positives before going down the tubes after multiple quarterback injuries. Coach Randy Edsall did a pretty good job of getting his team to compete respectably, even with an unbelievable number of injuries to key players. The Terps got a lot of young players on the field and this coming year's recruiting class will add many more high-quality players to the roster. I predict that Maryland football will be much better in 2013 and will make an appearance in a postseason bowl.
Finally, what could be better than the Baltimore-Washington area pro sports picture? Bryce Harper brought excitement and success to the Washington Nationals and helped them make the playoffs with the best won-loss record in regular season baseball. And the Nats are stockpiled with tons of young talent and probably the best pitching staff in the National League. And "how 'bout dem O's?" The Baltimore Orioles made one of the biggest turnarounds in all of sports, using some clever roster maneuvering to experience their first playoffs in 14 years. They, too, are a young team with their own 20-year-old rookie star in Manny Machado. I see both the Orioles and the Nats being able to compete for the pennant in their respective leagues and hopefully meet in the 2013 World Series. And the Redskins' first-round draft choice, quarterback Robert Griffin III, is possibly the most exciting player to arrive in the capital area since Sammy Baugh.
So, 2012 was a pretty good year. Coach's Corner is expecting 2013 to be even better. Who knows? I might even learn how to tweet.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) ? With the NFC East title on the line, Tony Romo threw interceptions on each of Dallas' first two possessions Sunday night, and Washington kicker Kai Forbath missed a field-goal try for the first time in his NFL career, leaving the Cowboys and Redskins tied 0-0 after the first quarter.
It was a win-or-go-home game moved into prime time to mark the end of the NFL's regular season: Whichever team lost would miss the playoffs, and the winner would host the wild-card Seattle Seahawks in a first-round game next weekend.
Washington and rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III won the coin toss, got the ball first and went three-and-out, with Dwayne Harris' 28-yard punt return setting up Dallas at the Washington 27.
But on Dallas' third play on offense, Romo's pass was picked off by Redskins rookie Richard Crawford. Walking to the sideline, Romo gave intended receiver Kevin Ogletree a talking-to.
The Redskins then drove into field-goal range, before Forbath sent his 37-yard attempt off the right upright, ending his NFL-record streak of 17 consecutive makes to begin a career. Forbath made two field goals last week to surpass Saints kicker Garrett Hartley's old mark of 16 in a row.
Dallas' second drive also ended with Romo's pass getting picked off, this time by cornerback Josh Wilson at Washington's 13. The Redskins again did not capitalize, needing to punt the ball back.
The Cowboys were seeking the first division title and playoff berth since 2009. The Redskins, meanwhile, sought their first trip to the postseason since 2007 ? and first NFC East championship since 1999. Washington finished in last place each of the past four seasons.
Washington entered the day on a six-game winning streak and with a 9-6 record, while Dallas came in 8-7.
A victory over Dallas would make Washington the first club since the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars to get to the playoffs after opening 3-6.

I saw on the news a few weeks ago there was one caught there over 150lbs. It was over 12' long and scientists were disecting it on this table and had dozens of eggs in it. I dont think snake boots would do much good down there.

You should see the rock pythons that are interbreeding with the constrictors they have in florida, dwarf 17'. The bad thing is, the rock python has an extremely bad attitude and will attack damn near anything or anybody. now we have to worry about a new super species from their interbreeding. http://www.treehugger.com/natural-sc...n-florida.html http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...nt-snakes.html
