Finding space for off-season items - Times Union

It's that time of year again, when we pull out the blankets and sweaters and stash the last of the warm-weather items until spring arrives.

Many homes lack the space needed to store everything right where we use it. So seasonal things get shuttled around and sometimes even misplaced.

If the serving dishes you use only at the holidays are stacked way up at the top of your pantry, "you may find yourself running out and buying something you've already got, because you can't remember what you have or you can't get to it," says Atlanta-based interior designer Mallory Mathison.

Many of her clients struggle with insufficient closet space for storing items that are only used for a few months each year.

Here, Mathison and interior designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Molly Luetkemeyer offer advice on creatively storing off-season items in ways that maximize every inch of space and make it easy to retrieve what you need.

Double-duty furniture

All three designers love furniture that offers hidden storage. A bench with storage space inside is perfect for boots, and bins containing scarves, gloves and hats.

Or add a large coffee table/ottoman combination to your living room: "They're an easy way to sneak a bit more seasonal storage into a room, without having to add extra closet space or add pricey, big-ticket furniture pieces," says Flynn, founder of the design website decordemon.com. "You can find a ton of storage-ottoman-coffee tables on websites like overstock.com or hayneedle.com."

For families with pets, Flynn suggests creating a sleeping space for a small dog or cat that doubles as seasonal storage. "To do this, I take a flea-market dresser, usually a highboy with four to six drawers, then remove the bottom two for use as an open lounge space for pets, complete with a removable cushion," he says. Use the remaining drawers above for seasonal items like off-season clothing.

Use under-bed spaces

Many people use the space under their master bed for seasonal storage. Luetkemeyer suggests doing the same with every bed in the house.

Tuck clear plastic bins under children's beds (and a guest bed, if you have one), labeling each one clearly.

You can rotate items in and out of these bins during the year ? one holding swimsuits all winter might hold sweaters in summer. If you know that all under-bed space is designated for seasonal items, it will be easier to track down the once-a-year items you're seeking.

Also, see whether any sofas or other large pieces of furniture might have room underneath for flat storage bins.

Try creative carpentry

Mathison suggests having built-in cabinets added along the walls on both sides of your bed. Creating this architectural niche for your bed "is totally cozy, and it also creates great concealed and/or open storage," she says.

Another built-in option: If your kitchen cabinets don't go all the way to the ceiling, add extra closed storage on top for seasonal serving dishes and table linens. Or have a row of very shallow shelves (no more than 3 or 4 inches deep) added to one wall of your kitchen or pantry. You can prop up dishware or serving pieces you rarely use, creatively storing them while adding some beauty to your walls.

Also, search your home for bits of square-footage that aren't being used, such as a crawl space under a staircase. Hire a handyman to add a small door and turn that empty space into a cabinet.

Consider changing your kitchen seating: Swap out chairs for built-in benches with hidden storage, then hide rarely-used items there.

Get hooked

"Seasonal things that inspire you should be left out as much as possible," Flynn says. "I use a ton of wall hooks in my spaces, mostly to be able to hang up favorite pieces of clothing, which add decorative flair to a room."

In a bedroom, a cluster of favorite flannel shirts can look great on decorative hooks, and the same goes for winter jackets. In summer, hang your favorite T-shirts or swimsuits on those same hooks while the winter items are put away.

This works well in kids' rooms and nurseries, helping ensure that kids wear their cutest pieces before the season ends and they grow out of them.

Use closets well

Maximize closet space by adding shelves up high if there aren't any, then keep a small step-ladder in the closet for accessing high items, Luetkemeyer says. Add inexpensive, battery-powered lights to dim closets, and increase shelf space by adding a row of canvas hanging shelves.

In a guest room closet, if you have one, Mathison suggests using two rows of hanging canvas shelves ? one filled with items your guest may need, such as extra towels and soap, and the other left empty so your guest can put out some of the clothes he or she brought. Then use the rest of the closet for your seasonal things. It will be clear to the guest what space is theirs and what isn't.

If winter items will be hung in a closet, Flynn opts for "thick wooden hangers or sculptural modern aluminum hangers to keep the structural integrity of coats or heavy pants." For lighter summer items, Luetkemeyer recommends slim, foam-covered hangers that take up less space and won't let items like camisoles slip off.

Pare down

Luetkemeyer points out that the change of season is a great time to identify items you don't use and get rid of them. Consider donating sheets or blankets you rarely use to a charity or shelter. Do the same with bulky winter coats and sweaters. You'll save space for seasonal items, and also embrace the meaning of the holiday season.

Bono Mack and Mack Fail in Election Bids

California Republican Mary Bono Mack has formally conceded her House reelection bid, joining her husband -- also a House member -- in twin defeats that leave them without jobs in Congress.

Bono Mack had served in the House for 14 years, after winning the special election to replace her late husband Sonny Bono, in 1998. On Friday, she conceded the race to Raul Ruiz, an emergency room doctor, who benefited from a redrawn district with 40 percent Latino voters.

?After 25 years of public life in the beautiful desert, it is now time for me to start a new chapter in my life,? she said in a statement.

Rep. Connie Mack IV, R-Fla., lost his bid to unseat veteran Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. Mack had served in the House since 2005.

Bono Mack and Mack are not the only married couple to have served in Congress at the same time, though it is a rare occurrence. Democrats Martha Keys and Andrew Jacobs served together for two terms in the 1970s, and Republicans Susan Molinari and Bill Paxton held concurrent office during the mid-90s.

Mack and Bono Mack will return to Congress for the lame-duck session. They have not announced their plans for the future.

Bono Mack represents California's 47th congressional district. She ran for reelection in the newly drawn 36th congressional district.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story omitted the congresswoman's married name and the number of the new district she ran in. Mary Bono Mack sought to represent the 36th congressional district.

Was Petraeus affair linked to lax Libya response?

CIA Director David Petraeus abruptly resigned Friday, citing an extramarital affair and the need to sort out the ?personal and professional issues? involved.

The former commander of forces in Iraq and Afghanistan had built a stellar and nearly unassailable reputation ? but mounting criticism of the Central Intelligence Agency?s response to the Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack in September was beginning to tarnish that reputation.

Word of Mr. Petraeus?s resignation sent ripples of stunned surprise through both the intelligence and military communities, raising questions that revolved around how long the affair had been going on and how an officer known for his rigorous self-discipline ? and attention to his reputation within the media ? could have made such a lapse in judgment.

RECOMMENDED: 5 ways events overseas could shape Obama's second term

In a letter of resignation accepted by the White House, Petraeus said he had been married 37 years but had exercised ?very poor judgment? in choosing to enter into an extramarital affair.

Petraeus, who was widely celebrated as a military commander and even occasionally mentioned as a potential presidential candidate, was sworn in as head of the CIA in September 2011 ? and had kept a low profile since. Now speculation is sure to proliferate over whether that low profile resulted from Petraeus focusing on America?s intelligence gathering or on personal matters.

In particular, members of Congress and other officials demanding answers about the Benghazi attack on the US consulate that resulted in the deaths of four Americans ? including the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stephens, and two CIA agents ? will want to know if there was any link between Petraeus?s extramarital activities and what has been increasingly criticized as the CIA?s weak performance on the night of the Benghazi attack.

More broadly, the reason for Petraeus?s departure will raise questions about any compromising of US covert operations and intelligence. The potential for blackmail of intelligence officers is always a concern about the spy corps, but the involvement of the nation?s top spy in an extramarital affair takes the concern to a new level.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been probing Petraeus and the potential security risks posed by his affair, CNN reported late Friday afternoon.

In the weeks since the Benghazi attack, officials have leaked information, including how Petraeus kept information on the CIA?s role in Benghazi so private that even Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was left to call Petraeus as the attack unfolded to try to get intelligence information from him.

Last week, CIA officials revealed that in fact, the intelligence agency?s operations in Benghazi dwarfed diplomatic operations at the consulate and that the CIA maintained what was described as an ?annex,? about a mile from the diplomatic mission.

State Department officials have said there was an informal understanding that the annex and its agents would come to the assistance of the consulate (which had private contractors providing security) if a need arose. CIA officials insist their agents responded to the consulate?s distress calls within a half-hour.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, President Obama praised Petraeus for his ?extraordinary service? to the country, adding, ?By any measure, through his lifetime of service, David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger.?

In a statement, Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona highlighted Petraeus?s role in Iraq, saying that his ?inspirational leadership and his genius were directly responsible ? after years of failure ? for the success of the surge in Iraq.?

But Petraeus?s success in Iraq and Afghanistan was a result to a certain extent of his focus on a counterinsurgency strategy that involved large numbers of troops fighting the enemy by incorporating nation-building into the battle. When Mr. Obama named Petraeus to head the CIA, it was widely interpreted as the president?s signal that he intended to wind down America?s wars and shift from a counterinsurgency strategy to counterterrorism.

Obama did not cite Petraeus?s reason for resigning but did say, ?Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time.?

Mrs. Petraeus is the assistant director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where she supports veterans and troops facing difficulties as a result of the financial crisis.

Obama initially tried to convince Petraeus not to resign, according to some souces. ?I am told that President Obama tried to talk Petraeus out of resigning, but Petraeus took the samurai route and insisted that he had done a dishonorable thing and now had to try to balance it by doing the honorable thing and stepping down as CIA director,? Tom Ricks reports in his blog ?The Best Defense.?

Such a move is in keeping with the military culture in which Petraeus rose to the rank of four-star general.

Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, adultery is a punishable offense for soldiers if the conduct is shown to be detrimental ?to good order and discipline in the armed forces or was of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces.?

Obama said that Michael Morell, deputy director of the CIA, would take over as acting director. Mr. Morell served briefly as acting director after Leon Panetta left the agency last year to become Defense secretary.

Petraeus was set to testify Thursday at a closed-door session of the Senate Intelligence Committee on the Benghazi attack, but it was unclear if his resignation would alter that schedule.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California, the Intelligence Committee chair, told NBC News that Petraeus?s personal mistake should not have led to his resignation.

?I would have stood up for him,? she said. ?I wanted him to continue. He was good, he loved the work, and he had a command of intelligence issues second to none.?

Obama, after winning reelection Tuesday, was already expected to make some changes in his national security team for a second term, but early speculation had been that Petraeus would stay on at the CIA. Now the job of spy chief will be added to the new-team mix.

Election Day bears fruit? Boehner, Reid talk of compromise on 'fiscal cliff.' (+video)

Senate majority leader Harry Reid claims a mandate from Election 2012 to let tax cuts expire for the 'richest of the rich.' House Speaker John Boehner says the mandate is for members of Congress to work together.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / November 7, 2012

Senate majority leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner hit a note of compromise not often heard in the last Congress as they weighed in Wednesday on how to deal with the "fiscal cliff" in Congress's upcoming lame-duck session.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But their conciliatory tones, in separate briefings on Capitol Hill, belied sharply different views on how to handle the looming fiscal crisis ? and how Tuesday's election should impact lawmaking in Congress.

?If there is a mandate in yesterday?s results, it is a mandate for us to find a way to work together on solutions to the challenges we face together as a nation,? Speaker Boehner said in a briefing with reporters. ?My message today is not one of confrontation, but of conviction."

Senator Reid, a former boxer, concurred.

?I know how to fight. I know how to dance. I don't dance as well as I fight, but I'd much rather dance any time,? he said, in a separate briefing. ?It's better to dance than to fight.?

But whether Congress tangos or tussles, congressional action is needed before the American economy goes off the fiscal cliff on Jan. 1. That?s when expiring fiscal policy amounting to more than $600 billion in higher taxes and new mandated spending cuts goes into effect. Economists say that could put the economy into a recession in the first half of 2013.

Reid said Congress should deal with the cliff as part of what others have called a ?grand bargain,? a wide-ranging debt and deficit reduction deal. And Congress should grapple with that big-picture problem as soon as possible.

?I'm not for kicking the can down the road,? the majority leader said. ?I think we've done that far too much.... We know what the issue is. We need to solve that issue. Waiting for a month, six weeks, six months, that's not going to solve the problem. We know what needs to be done. And so I think that we should just roll up our sleeves and get it done.?

Boehner explicitly ruled out such a move in his own statement to the press.

?We won't solve the problem of our fiscal imbalance overnight, in the midst of a lame duck session of Congress,? he said. ?And we certainly won't solve it by simply raising tax rates or taking a plunge off the fiscal cliff.?

Instead, Boehner set out a goal of achieving a ?down payment? on the nation?s long-term financial solvency that would be a ?catalyst? for ?major solutions, enacted in 2013.?

Reid swore that neither he nor the speaker would ?draw any lines in the sand? on the policy measures needed to avert a fiscal disaster ? before both men did everything except say the words, ?I have drawn a line in the sand.?

However, he did see Tuesday's election ? President Obama?s electoral thrashing of Mitt Romney, a larger Democratic majority in the Senate, and gains for Democrats in the House ? as a mandate from voters to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire for households with income over $250,000.

?The mandate was, look at all the exit polls, look at all the polling,? Reid said. ?The vast majority of the American people ? rich, poor, everybody ? agrees that the rich, [the] richest of the rich, have to help a little bit.?

(AP) ? Damage in New York state from Superstorm Sandy could total $33 billion when all is said and done, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday as the state began cleaning up from a nor'easter that dumped snow, brought down power lines and left hundreds of thousands of new customers in darkness.

A damage forecasting firm had previously estimated that Sandy might have caused $30 billion to $50 billion in economic losses from the Carolinas to Maine, including property damage, lost business and extra living expenses. Cuomo's estimate will likely push the bill even higher.

A damage estimate of even $50 billion total would make Sandy the second most expensive storm in U.S. history, right behind Hurricane Katrina. Sandy inundated parts of New York City and New Jersey with a storm surge as high as 14 feet, killed more than 100 people and left more than 8.5 million people without power at its peak.

Sandy left more people in the dark than any previous storm, the Department of Energy has said, and it left drivers desperate for gas when it complicated fuel deliveries.

"We are going to have to look at a ground-up redesign," Cuomo said of the power and fuel supply systems. "With power outages, you paralyze the nation, and chaos ensues."

In particular, Cuomo noted New York City's problems, largely due to the surge of seawater that inundated utilities lying 15 to 20 stories below ground.

"That's a brilliant engineering masterpiece, yes, but if Manhattan floods, you flood all that infrastructure," he said. "We don't even have a way to pump it out."

On Thursday, a nor'easter that stymied recovery efforts from Sandy pulled away from New York and New Jersey, leaving hundreds of thousands of new people in darkness but failing to swamp shorelines anew, as feared.

Residents from Connecticut to Rhode Island saw 3 to 6 inches of snow on Wednesday. Worcester, Mass., had 8 inches of snow, and Freehold, N.J., had just over a foot overnight. Some parts of Connecticut got a foot or more.

From Brooklyn to storm-battered sections of the Jersey shore and Connecticut, about 750,000 customers ? more than 200,000 from the new storm ? in the region were without power in temperatures near freezing, some after already living for days in the dark.

"We lost power last week, just got it back for a day or two, and now we lost it again," said John Monticello, of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. "Every day it's the same now: turn on the gas burner for heat. Instant coffee. Use the iPad to find out what's going on in the rest of the world."

But most were just grateful the new storm didn't bring a fresh round of devastation.

"For a home without power, it's great. It came through the storm just great," said Iliay Bardash, 61, a computer programmer on Staten Island without electricity since last week. "But things are not worse, and for that I am thankful."

Nearby, Vladimir Repnin emerged from his powerless home with a snow shovel in his hand, a cigarette in his mouth and a question from someone cut off from the outside world.

"Who won? Obama?" he asked.

He didn't like the answer.

"The Democrats ruined my business," he said, referring to his shuttered clothing manufacturing firm.

Unlike other holdouts who got by with generators or gas stoves, the 63-year-old from Ukraine has been without power since Sandy brought 8 feet of water through his door and his neighbor's deck into his yard. He tried to beat the cold Wednesday night by sleeping with his Yorkie, Kuzya, and cat, Channel.

"I had the dog right here," he said, pointing to his left side, "and the cat on my chest. It was still too cold, but I cannot leave my house."

Throughout Staten Island's beach area, the storm had blanketed growing piles of debris with several inches of snow. By mid-morning, it was starting to melt, filling the streets with filthy sludge.

Airlines canceled hundreds of flights before and during the new storm. On Thursday, there were about 600 canceled, according to flight tracking service FlightAware, mostly in the New York area.

But roads in New Jersey and New York City were clear for the morning commute, and rail lines into New York were running smoothly so far, despite snow still coming down heavily in some areas.

The Queens-Midtown Tunnel, a vital vehicular route linking Manhattan to the city borough of Queens and the rest of Long Island, is reopening Friday after being swamped by Sandy, Cuomo said.

Under ordinary circumstances, a storm of this sort wouldn't be a big deal. But large swaths of the landscape were still an open wound, with the electrical system highly fragile and many of Sandy's victims still mucking out their homes and cars and shivering in the deepening cold. As the storm picked up Wednesday evening, lights started flickering off again.

The additional power outages could stall recovery efforts, even though utility companies had prepared, adding extra crews ahead of the nor'easter.

In New Jersey, there were about 400,000 power outages early Thursday; 150,000 of those were new. In New York City and Westchester, more than 70,000 customers were without power after the storm knocked out an additional 55,000 customers.

For Consolidated Edison, the extra outages were dealt with swiftly, so there were only about 3,000 additional customers without power from the total Wednesday of 67,000.

"I think we're going to be able to power through. Our objective was to get power restored to everyone by the weekend and we're still working with that goal," said Alfonso Quiroz, a spokesman for the utility.

On Long Island, an area badly battered, there were 125,000 new outages, but about 80,000 were restored, making a total of about 300,000 customers without power. Long Island Power Authority spokesman Mark Gross said the utility was assessing new damage while working to restore outages.

Paul Farash, of West Babylon, N.Y., said he got power back after three days and didn't lose it again.

"Whatever I experienced was minimal compared to a whole lot of other people," he said. "I've seen some things. I've heard about some things. and I know some things. And I'm counting my blessings. I'll survive."

There was good weather news: temperatures over the next few days will be in the 50s in southern New England, said meteorologist Frank Nocera, and on Sunday it could edge into the 60s.

Disabled Veterans National Foundation Calls for Increased Attention to Meeting the Needs of Women Veterans

DVNF urges Congress to increase the attention given to Social, Economic and Health issues faced by our returning US female military veterans

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 08, 2012

The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF), founded by women veterans to change the lives of soldiers returning home with emotional and physical wounds, is urging Congress and the nation to increase the attention given to issues faced by women veterans in light of statistics showing their needs for housing, health care and jobs are not being adequately met.

While overall veteran employment shows a slight improvement, nearly one in five women who served in Afghanistan or Iraq are without adequately paying jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of women requesting medical services at VA health care facilities has doubled from 2000 to 2011, and female veterans are four times more likely to be homeless compared to both their female civilian and male veteran counterparts.

?The difficulties faced by women veterans are complex and increasing,? said Precilla Wilkewitz, President of the DVNF. ?Our organization and many others have been committed to helping women veterans, but our country needs to make their issues a higher priority. While female veterans are due the same benefits as male veterans, they have unique problems and needs, particularly in the areas of health care and housing. Additionally, many women veterans are single mothers, and we need to be concerned about them because their children are our country?s future.?

As the U.S. troop withdrawal in Afghanistan continues, unemployment for post-9/11 female veterans surged to 19.9 percent in September, compared to 12.1 percent in August. More women than ever are enlisted in the armed services, so more women veterans are returning to civilian life, comprising about 15 percent of all homecoming veterans.

"Women veterans have issues that are not faced by male veterans", said Wilkewitz, "including trauma from sexual assault during their military service, lower paying jobs, unique health and mental health issues, and homelessness that includes dependent children."

?For example, the Department of Defense estimates that one in four women who serve in the military are raped or assaulted,? said Wilkewitz. ?Also, there is a shortage of safe living environments for homeless female veterans, which only perpetuates the cycle of being homeless and unemployed. There are even fewer facilities available for homeless women who have children."

?Female veterans bring great value to our country, to our families and to our workforce. It?s critical that attention be focused more strategically on immediate care when they return home, training and jobs, and housing and health care.?

China: Pigeons must stay in coops during congress

(AP) ? Don't roll down the taxi windows. Don't buy a remote-controlled plane without a police chief's permission. And don't release your pigeons.

Beijing is tightening security as its all-important Communist Party congress approaches, and some of the measures seem downright bizarre. Kitchen knives and pencil sharpeners reportedly have been pulled from store shelves, and there's even a rumor that authorities are on the lookout for seditious messages on pingpong balls.

The congress, which begins Nov. 8, will name new leaders to run the world's most populous country and second-largest economy for the next decade. Most of the security measures have been phased in in time for Thursday's opening of a meeting of the Central Committee, the roughly 370-member body that is finalizing preparations for the congress.

China always tightens security for high-profile events, like much of the rest of the world. London, for instance, restricted air traffic during the Olympics.

But many of Beijing's rules seem extraordinary, perhaps in an effort to smooth a once-a-decade transition that has already been bumpy.

Bo Xilai, once a candidate for the all-powerful Politburo's Standing Committee, suffered a spectacular fall from grace in which his wife was convicted of murder. One of President Hu Jintao's closest aides was also forced to step down after his son was killed alongside two partially dressed women in an accident in his Ferrari. Meanwhile, protests over pollution, land seizures and local corruption continue across the country.

Human rights groups report that activists and petitioners are being rounded up ahead of the congress. But the broader security measures may best illustrate how China is trying to leave absolutely no room for disruptions.

The government has blocked searches for the phrase "party congress" on websites including China's popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo. Internet posters manage to get around that by using characters that sound like "party congress."

Taxi drivers have been told to remove window handles and require passengers to sign a "traveling agreement" promising to avoid sensitive parts of the city and not to open their windows or doors if they pass "important venues."

A man who answered the phone at Wan Quan Si taxi company in the south of the capital said the rule applies to all taxi companies in Beijing. He declined to give his name.

Beijing investment company worker Li Tianshu said she didn't believe colleagues' claims that door handles had been removed until she got into a taxi herself the other day.

"There were no handles for three of the four windows," she said. "The driver told me that their company asked them to do it to prevent passengers spreading leaflets. The driver complained that if they don't take the handles away or the passengers throw leaflets out of the taxis, they will be fired."

Citizens have taken to Weibo to post photos of doors with handles crudely ripped off. Liu Shi, a client manager in a mass communication company, wrote that the taxi driver had told him that power to electronic window buttons would also be cut.

A memo circulating on Weibo warned taxi drivers to be on guard against passengers who may want to cast balloons with slogans or throw "pingpong balls with reactionary words." It was unclear who issued the memo and its authenticity could not be confirmed.

A man who wouldn't give his name at Tong Hai taxi company in central Beijing said it had received orders "from higher authorities" to reinforce security measures and a memo, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Police in the capital are asking that Chinese show their ID cards and foreigners their passports when buying remote-controlled model aircraft over safety concerns, the official Global Times newspaper reported Tuesday.

One toy store owner said authorities had told him to stop selling medium and large-sized planes.

"This kind of plane can't fly over long distances and it can hardly carry anything," said Chen Ziping, holding up a model about half a meter (half a yard) long. "They just told me to stop selling it and I have to follow the order."

The Global Times quoted an unnamed police officer from Aoyuncun station in Chaoyang district as saying that people wanting to buy model planes during the congress should go to the vendor's local police station to register. When the buyer receives approval from the station's police chief, he can make the purchase, the officer said.

Still, they won't be allowed to fly model planes in the city, and balloons also are on the blacklist, the newspaper said. It cited another officer from Chaoyang district Public Security Bureau as saying that pigeon owners must keep their birds in their coops during the congress.

Chen Jieren had a run-in with the security rules Sunday after the handle of his knife broke while he was cooking dinner. He took his ID card to the supermarket, knowing that people must show identification when buying knives during sensitive periods.

"Well, it didn't work this time," Chen said in a telephone interview. "I was told by the police that no more knives can be sold, not even pencil sharpeners. And I don't think the shopkeeper was kidding, because several days ago I saw myself that police were asking the sales assistants in the stationer's not to sell pencil sharpeners.

"I went back and got an old knife and tried to sharpen it. I guess I have to live with it until the Congress finishes," he added, glumly.

Wang Ye, an engineer from Beijing who lives in Shanghai, was planning on returning to his home city to run a marathon, but it was postponed with no word on when it might be held. The date of a marathon in the eastern city of Hangzhou, near Shanghai, was also changed.

"There is no official explanation, but we all know that it is due to the 18th Congress," he said. "(The Beijing marathon) has been held regularly for the past 31 years.

"I guess I will give up running competitions in China and try to attend more abroad," said Wang. "At least they tell me the schedule one year before the event."

?We have two things to do,? Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently said to what may have been the 1,000th person to ask him about the house of Super Mario is going to cope with that fact that people really, really love their cellphones and that that might hurt their ability to love Nintendo machines.

The company, he said, has ?to offer consumers gaming experiences which smart devices cannot realize and to actively try to make smart devices our allies, not our enemies.?

Yes, Nintendo wants to be friends with your iPhone, but not soooo friendly that they are going to sell you Super Mario Bros. or Pokemon on it. They?ve got a different vision.
