Superstorm Sandy made for a frightening time even for the bravest adults in the storm's path. So just imagine how scary the devastating storm was for children who lived through it first hand or even those who simply saw the images of destruction on their televisions. For kids, no amount of statistics or estimated recovery times really explain the weather event or provide comfort in its wake.

Parents have no doubt been working overtime to soothe their affected tykes, and now they have some help from a voice every child trusts.

On Tuesday morning, "Sesame Street's" Elmo visited Brian Lehrer's WNYC's radio show and spoke directly to his young audience. And as it turns out, the Muppet is a hurricane pro, having been through a scary storm on "Sesame Street" in the past.

"Well, the wind started blowing really bad, and we had to put tape on windows and stuff," he explained of the episode. He even had to help his pal Big Bird put his nest back together after the storm destroyed it.

Joining Elmo and host Lehrer was Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, the vice president of education and research for Sesame Workshop. She explained that the episode was created long before Sandy or even Hurricane Katrina. It was meant to help parents if their kids should ever face a similar storm.

"'Sesame Street' is based on a whole child curriculum, and so we focus not only on the cognitive skills, but social and emotional skills of children," Truglio said. "We wanted to have a community show like this where we could model for parents tips -- so that we could model how you prepare for a storm and how you get through the storm with activities ... and keeping your child calm and safe."

As for Elmo, he took a question from a fan who wanted to know if he was scared on Monday night, as Hurricane Sandy hit his hometown.

"Yeah, but Elmo was with his mommy and daddy, so Elmo asked a lot of questions and learned a lot about what was happening," he assured.

His main question of the night was, "Will the wind ever stop blowing?" And he shared the answer he got.

"The windows were moving and stuff and they said, 'Yes, everything would calm down and be OK."

And so it was for Elmo, and hopefully it was for all of his young fans, too.

Northeast back to business after Sandy's hard hit

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of people across the U.S. Northeast stricken by massive storm Sandy will attempt to resume normal lives on Wednesday as companies, markets and airports reopen, despite grim projections of power and mass transit outages lasting several more days.

With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama will visit storm-ravaged areas of the New Jersey shore, where Sandy made landfall on Monday. His guide will be Republican Governor Chris Christie, a vocal backer of presidential challenger Mitt Romney who has nevertheless praised Obama and the federal response to the storm.

Sandy, which has killed 40 people in the United States, pushed inland and dumped snow in the Appalachian Mountains. Its remains slowed over Pennsylvania, and it was expected to move north toward western New York and Canada, the National Weather Service said.

Blizzard warnings and coastal flood warnings for the shores of the Great Lakes were in effect.

Battered by a record storm surge of nearly 14 feet of water, swaths of New York City remained submerged under several feet of water. In the city's borough of Staten Island, police used helicopters to pluck stranded residents from rooftops.

Across the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, members of the National Guard arrived to help residents pump floodwater from their homes, the city said on Twitter.

More than 8.2 million homes and businesses remained without electricity across several states as trees toppled by fierce winds tore down power lines.

In New Jersey, Christie said it could take seven to 10 days before power is restored statewide.

Subway tracks and commuter tunnels under New York City, which carry several million people a day, were under several feet of water.

In the lower half of Manhattan, a quarter million residents remained without power after a transformer explosion at a Con Edison substation Monday night.

"I'M ALL COLD INSIDE"

On Manhattan's Lower East Side, one of the neighborhoods without power, 87-year-old Thea Lucas said she came outside from her apartment, where she lives alone, to warm herself up with a walk and to feed seven cats that she looks after.

"I can make hot water," she said. "But there is no heating and I'm all cold inside."

In Brooklyn, a large tree fell on a house belonging to Jean-Claude Mersier, blocking the front entrance, breaking windows and crushing a car.

As he hauled away its branches, Mersier said police told him it might take two weeks to a month before someone could come to remove the biggest sections of the tree.

"The storm has not been good to us," he said.

In Greenwich Village, where downed trees littered the streets, residents gathered around a neighborhood police station to use its power outlets to charge their cell phones.

New York City likely will struggle without subways for days, authorities said. Buses were operating on a limited basis and many residents were walking long distances or scrambling to grab scarce taxi cabs on the streets.

In Hoboken, a fleet of yellow cabs could be seen submerged in water nearly as high as the vehicles' windows.

Despite much of the city's financial district being damaged by flooding, financial markets were scheduled to reopen on Wednesday as well. How much activity could take place remained to be seen, however, as many workers may be unlikely to get to work without subways and commuter railroads from the suburbs.

In New Jersey, Christie took a helicopter tour of devastation on Tuesday along the shore, where boats were adrift, boardwalks were washed away and roads were blocked by massive sand drifts. He stopped in the badly damaged resort towns of Belmar and Avalon.

"I was just here walking this place this summer, and the fact that most of it is gone is just incredible," he said at one stop.

The storm killed 22 people in New York City, among 27 total in New York state, while six died in New Jersey. Seven other states reported fatalities. One disaster modeling company said Sandy may have caused up to $15 billion in insured losses.

Sandy hit the East Coast with a week to go to the November 6 presidential election, dampening an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting and raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS TO RESUME

Obama faces political danger if the government fails to respond well, as was the case with his predecessor George W. Bush's botched handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Obama and Romney put campaigning on hold for a second day on Tuesday but Romney planned to hold rallies in the battleground state of Florida on Wednesday and Obama seemed likely to resume campaigning on Thursday.

Sandy became the biggest storm to hit the United States in generations when it crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds on Monday near the New Jersey gambling resort of Atlantic City.

Two of the area's major airports - John F. Kennedy International in New York and Newark Liberty International - planned to reopen with limited service on Wednesday.

New York's LaGuardia Airport, the third of the airports that serve the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed.

Nearly 19,000 flights have been canceled since Sunday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.com.

On Broadway, the Theater League announced that most shows would resume performances on Wednesday. Shows had been canceled since Sunday due to the storm.

Sandy forced New York City to postpone its traditional Halloween parade, which had been set for Wednesday night in Greenwich Village.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was ejected from Sunday?s game against the Steelers for a confrontation with an official, and he likely faces a hefty fine. But Hall says any discipline he faces should be handed out to the official as well.

Hall said on 106.7 The Fan that head linesman Dana McKenzie was giving just as good as he got in their verbal exchange. It sure didn?t look that way on TV ? it looked like Hall was screaming in McKenzie?s face and sticking his finger about an inch from McKenzie?s nose, and that McKenzie was showing admirable restraint ? but Hall said the TV angles were deceiving.

?From that particular camera angle you can?t see what that ref?s saying to me,? Hall said, via the Washington Post. ?So it looks like I?m just out there giving him a piece of my mind and he?s smiling and walks away. And that?s not the case at all. He?s dishing it out just as much as I?m dishing it out.?

Hall said he?s hoping to show the league office a different angle of the incident before the league determines any punishment.

?It was just a back and forth between me and that particular ref,? Hall said. ?And I can?t go into too many details because it?s still under review. But that?s kind of how it took place. If you look at the TV copy, you can only see me. That?s why we?re trying to get other copies and other angles so you can see both sides. But me and the ref was equally at fault on that particular play.?

Hall also indicated that he wants the league office to consider what kind of person he is.

?Nobody is going out there trying to bully the referees and likewise, they shouldn?t be out there trying to bully us,? Hall said.

Hall is right that the officials shouldn?t try to bully the players. But it sure didn?t look like the official in question was trying to bully Hall. It looked like the official was doing his job, and Hall was acting like a jerk.

SAN FRANCISCO -- If Bruce Bochy wishes to announce that his World Series Game 2 starter is Louis CK, you need to be prepared to nod, say, ?Yeah, good call. Well done. Brilliant stroke.?

Because while we have always known that Bochy is one of the best pitching manipulators in managing history, it?s when his choices hit every note every time, game in and game out, that you see that his true ability is to see things mere mortals do not.

So it is that in the wake of the Giants? 8-3 win over Detroit in Game 1 of the Series, the much-told redemptive story will be of Pablo Sandoval, the man who hit three home runs three different ways and re-defined the concept of the great bad-ball hitter.

But the back story will be of the other redeemed characters, Barry Zito and Tim Lincecum, who took the Detroit lineup and muzzled it. They didn?t need to worry about the long shadow of Justin Verlander, because they knew that ultimately the Tigers are defined by their offense.

And their offense was stripped and readied for lacquering.

?To be able to go up against Verlander, and give our team a chance to go up 1-0, and the fact that we won, it?s just kind of surreal,? Zito said.

And then, including Lincecum, he expanded the definition of the term.

?To have him in the bullpen, it?s just like ridiculous,? Zito said. ?It?s such a tool in our pocket that we can bust out at any time a guy who has made history. It was just really special personally too to watch Timmy carve them and just do what he does.?

Between them, they lasted eight innings, allowed six hits and a single run, walking one and striking out eight. These were Verlander numbers, only Verlander?s looked like they were backwards: 4 6 5 5 1 4 .

And while Sandoval, and to lesser extents Angel Pagan, Marco Scutaro and Buster Posey had their hands in most of the eight Giant runs, the eye-opener was that Zito and Lincecum seemed to merge as one, like some sort of heavy-lidded Transformer and redefine the series before it even got a chance to begin.

Zito gave up five of his six hits to the top four Tiger hitters -- Austin Jackson, Omar Infante, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. But only Cabrera?s in the sixth actually raised a welt, and the bottom five spots in the order did nothing whatsoever. In short, Zito carved Detroit?s lineup card in half.

?Mostly he was just spotting his cutter and fastball in,? Posey said. ?He just stayed with his plan, and moved the ball around. He got a couple of pitches up, but mostly he put it where he wanted it put.?

And by the time Lincecum came in the sixth, the game was already boxed, taped and labeled. Still, he struck out five of the seven Tigers he faced despite his fastball capping at 92, and gave every indication that pitching out of the stretch, throwing breaking balls to keep the ball from running up in the zone, and without a lot of time to fret about his work is actually becoming the cure to what?s ailed him.

?Mostly, I?m just pitching, and not worrying about the mechanics and stuff,? he said. ?I was just trying to get outs, really. We had a lead, and I know we came back from behind in the last two series, but we don?t want to do that again. We want to get this over as quickly as possible.?

That won?t be as easy as Game 1 suggests, unless Bochy has also transmogrified Madison Bumgarner, the Game 2 starter. And bluff old seamhead that he is, he won?t be banking on Sandoval hitting three more homers. This series got easier, but not easy. Not yet.

But a tone has been set, because the biggest pitching disappointments of 2010 and 2012 are only barely related to the fellows wearing their uniforms today. Barry Zito is one of the leading feel-good stories of the postseason, Tim Lincecum is beginning to reinvent himself two innings at a time, and the Giants are making a statement that looks an awful lot like a boot in the nethers.

Put another way, they?ve given up four runs in four games and 22 in eight. One set of figures means one run a game, the other 2.75.

Either way, that?s pitching, which is right in Bruce Bochy?s wheelhouse. That means we?ll be writing about Louis CK gave up comedy to be a World Series hero, because at this point, any story line connected to San Francisco?s pitching is completely believable.

James Cameron Eyes The Informationist

Remember when James Cameron said he was only going to make Avatar sequels from here on out? Yeah, scratch that.

THR reports that Cameron has picked up the film rights to Taylor Stevens? novel The Informationist,?and that he will direct and produce the feature. The book focuses on an African woman who grew up around mercenaries and later becomes an ?information dealer? for wealthy clients. Her latest customer sends her on a quest to find his missing daughter, which sends the main character back to her homeland.

Early comparisons describe the novel?s main character as a ?cross between Lisbeth Salander and Sherlock Holmes," and given Cameron?s penchant for strong female leads, this could turn out to be an interesting new franchise.

Stevens has already published two books about the character, so there?s certainly a chance we might see these books become Cameron?s next big project. Of course, the question is when will see this movie? With the filmmaker committed to Avatar 2,?3?and 4 (rumored to be a prequel) for the foreseeable future, we might not see The Informationist start to take shape until much closer to 2020.

Despite that potential delay, Cameron and company currently have a call out for writers. We?ll keep you updated on this one as the story develops. Here's the book's trailer ...

Powell Is Chosen For Second Term As Winter Haven's Mayor

WINTER HAVEN | Mayor J.P. Powell's will sport the city's "bling" for another year.

J.P. Powell was elected to another term as Winter Haven's mayor by the city commission on Monday.

He was chosen for a second one-year term as mayor, again donning the city's gold mayoral chain at Monday's meeting of the City Commission.

Commissioner Jamie Beckett was chosen as mayor pro-tem.

"I thought you were Flavor Flav up there with that necklace around your neck," Polk County Commissioner Todd Dantzler told Powell as he came to the City Hall lectern as a representative of a property being considered for a planned unit development rezoning request.

Don't know who Flavor Flav is? Don't worry, neither did Powell.

Flavor Flav was a member of the ?90s hip-hop group Public Enemy and was known for wearing long chains with large clocks hanging from his neck.

The mayoral chain, a 1988 gift from a sister city, hangs more than a foot off Powell's neck. A hockey-puck-sized medallion hangs from the chain. It's color is gold, but no one is quite sure if it's the real thing. It does stay in the city vault for all but a few days a year, however.

Flavor Flav popularized the role of the "hype man" in a hip hop group ? basically he yelled short statements like "yeah boy" during live performances.

Powell isn't expecting any similar outbursts during meetings.

"No," Powell said. "I share the bling with my fellow commissioners ... but it stays in the vault."

Powell hasn't worn the mayoral chain since he was chosen as mayor last year.

"I didn't even know my name was on there until just now now," Powell said.

Winter Haven commissioners choose a mayor and a mayor pro-tem each year. The floor is opened for nominations, a motion is made in favor of one person and a vote is taken.

Powell and Beckett were the only nominations for their respective positions.

Commissioner Pete Chichetto nominated Powell. Commissioner Nat Birdsong, last year's mayor pro-tem, nominated Beckett.

The mayor serves a one-year term and is paid $14,560. Commissioners are paid $11,590 per year.

The property Dantzler was representing is on Cypress Gardens Boulevard and is about a mile east of Legoland Florida. The planned unit development includes a hotel, restaurants and a convenience store.

A second reading of the proposed ordinance will be read at the first meeting in November.

That meeting is being held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, because City Hall will be closed on Nov. 12 for Veterans Day.
