Rick Ayers: Some Anti-war Reflections on Memorial Day

Across the country this memorial day, in parks and at parades, before sporting events and at graduation ceremonies, the hypocrisy of paunchy old men extolling the glories of warfare was on obscene display. And President Obama's performance at the Vietnam Memorial Wall was another pathetic case of pandering to an idiotic narrative of a military establishment bent on creating a state of permanent war.

A few crucial points must be reiterated:

The opposition to the Vietnam War was not some unfeeling hippies who disrespected the troops. By the 1970's, the heart and soul of the anti-war movement was the veterans and the active duty GI's. Slowly, over the years, the warmongers have tried to rewrite that history into a lie about the poor veteran and the unfeeling peaceniks. The researcher Jerry Lembcke, by the way, looked into every reported story of GI's being spat upon when arriving home and found not one single credible case. See his book The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam.

Nevertheless, while we in the anti-war movement love our veterans (certainly more than the Veteran's Administration which is criminal in its neglect and disgusting in its avoidance of diagnoses of PTSD) we cannot soften what they did (in Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan) with terms like "service." At its best, the Vietnam anti-war veterans were not just talking about how hard it was on them but they were coming to terms with the horrors of what they did over there. Yes, the ones who should be held accountable should be the top brass and the politicians. But everyone in this life has moral responsibility for his or her actions -- even if they are done under horrible circumstances. We certainly maintain that standard when considering German soldiers in World War II. Following orders is not a legal excuse. And certainly the lowest infantrymen should not be punished but they do have some moral reflection to do.

Which brings me to this horrid logic of the public discourse on war. Every politician, of any stripe, insists that they honor the soldiers for fighting. Honor them. Because they showed valor. And patriotism. Even when the war was wrong, dead wrong, we must honor their "service." What we get into here is a logical fallacy of death justifying death. Yes, the Iraq war was criminal, based on manufactured evidence, seeking the expansion of empire, creating an exponential increase in the number of terrorists, slaughtering 600,00 civilians, leading to 20 GI suicides a day, and wrecking the world economy. It has been an obscenity and the NATO-US war on Afghanistan is just an extension of the obscenity. Since no one any more can argue for these policies, they argue that we must honor the dead. They have done something marvelous, we are told. And those who were right, who opposed the war? Riffraff.

While we are looking at the big picture, let's admit that we have turned away from a universal or even selective draft system so that the war does not touch the privileged. The U.S. now sends its poor and working class youth to fight the wars so that life can go on in the privileged communities with no real pain or consequence. Young people rush to the military to escape the bloody streets of their communities, which are ravished by drugs, unemployment, and prisons. They are escaping an economy that has completely marginalized them and schools that are useless in solving their problems. They go to prison if they join gangs in their communities but are welcomed into the biggest and most violent gang of all, the U.S. military. Then they are held up as heroes by the very ones who put them in the predicament that got them killed.

This is the kind of death's head war culture we saw in the Roman legions in the last century of that empire. And it is the kind of mindless patriotism that has shamed and degraded our country.

Let us honor veterans by speaking the truth. They are tough enough to take it. And the veterans, who were tricked into fighting a criminal war by the lies of recruiters, deserve better than to be used once again as rallying points for the recruitment of new cannon fodder.

Why Zimbabwe's President Mugabe was named UN 'tourism envoy'

Zimbabwe's President Mugabe, who signed an agreement to co-host a UN tourism conference, now has an honorary position as envoy, despite a long record of human rights abuses.

Zimbabwe?s President Robert Mugabe has just been named the UN?s international envoy for tourism. It?s a special recognition for Mr. Mugabe?s agreement to co-host, with Zambia, a United Nations World Tourism Organization general assembly next August.

At a ceremony in Victoria Falls, Mugabe said the agreement between Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the United Nations is of ?historical importance.?
?
??For our people, the signing of the agreement attests to our commitment, our readiness to welcome the entire tourism fraternity to our countries,? Mugabe was quoted by the independent Zimbabwe newspaper NewsDay as saying. ?For the UN World Tourism Organisation, on the other hand, the signatures testify to the confidence and trust that was bestowed upon us.?

That Mugabe, a man who faces a European Union travel ban and economic sanctions because of his repression and torture of opposition activists, would be named a UN envoy for tourism has drawn a certain amount of criticism.

Mr. Mugabe?s ruling party is accused of arresting, detaining, and in some cases killing members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change during the 2008 national elections. He later formed a coalition government with the MDC, after an 11-month stalemate in which the national currency became worthless and inflation soared to more than 1 million percent.

Mugabe is also blamed for a violent land-reclamation campaign, in which armed thugs stormed and took over the property of white commercial farmers, as well as the?Gukurahundi counterinsurgency campaign in the early 1980s against the rival ZAPO militant group in the Matabeleland region, which killed as many as 20,000 people.

So Mugabe?s selection as UN tourism envoy is not an obvious choice.

Fake Customer Reviews and Internet Law - Internet Lawyer Blog

Professor Eric Goldman has an excellent post about Internet fake customer reviews: What Are Appropriate Compensatory Damages for 3 Fake Competitor Reviews? The Surprising Answer?Fireworks Restoration v. Hosto.

Nominal actual damages were awarded but $150,000 in punitive damages were slapped against the guy writing negative fake customer reviews against his former business partner.

As I?ve explained to my Internet law clients, there are plenty of ways to compete fairly online without resorting to ?black hat? marketing tactics that end up costing your business far more than you?ll ever make by using them.

Given the importance of online customer reviews to many companies, both Internet-based and brick-and-mortar establishments, this issue will continue to wind its way through the courts because the temptation to post fake negative reviews is simply too great for some to pass up. You see it all the time in reviews on Google, Amazon, etc. Someone with an axe to grind decides to smear the reputation of a company by posting a false customer review.

No one says you have to promote your competitor?s business online. But it?s good practice to treat your competitor?s reputation the same way you?d like your competitor to treat yours when engaging in Internet marketing strategies and tactics.

Sharp Pantone 5 ICS phone has 8 color choices, 3.7-inch screen -- oh, and a radiation detector

sharp-pantone-ics-phone-8-color-radiation-detector

Color us shocked and jealous at the new Android 4.0 phone from Sharp -- strange and wonderful even by Japan's highly elevated standards. The eight colors of the 3.7-inch Pantone branded phone from carrier Softbank are nice for sure, but the ability to sense between .005 and 9.99 μSv/h of radiation is in a new category altogether. Though Sharp has hedged a bit by describing the detector as "non-compliant" with Japan standards at this point, the possibilities seem endless for such a feature -- the ability to constantly report your location and radiation level to Facebook comes to mind, for instance. It will be offered -- in Japan only, we presume -- with a 4-megapixel rear camera, eight Pantone colors, 0.3-megapixel front camera, 854 x 480 resolution, and will be dust-proof and waterproof. The price hasn't been discussed yet, but we can't imagine too much quibbling whatever it is, for a phone that could keep you gamma-ray safe.

Update: We have an image after the break showing how Sharp reduced the radiation circuits into a tiny package needed for the Pantone 5. The phone even as a dedicated button for the feature.

Memoirs of an Independent Auto Repair Shop Owner: Of Hondas ...

This is number one of hopefully a long series from the inside of a auto repair shop. Say hi to Phil.?

When I spun the engine on the early ?80?s Honda Accord, the telltale sound of the starter motor wheeling the engine around with no compression-resistance was not what I wanted to hear.

It?s not that I didn?t expect it.

Typically, when it comes to the area of service/maintenance/repair of vehicles, I have to see things in purely mechanical terms. Whatever personality or ?soul? might be experienced by operating or admiring the aesthetics of any motorized amalgamation doesn?t translate when it is occupying my repair bay. The law of cause and effect always reigns supreme, there. As one sows, so does one reap. The math never fails to be accurate. One plus one ALWAYS equals TWO! Slough-off on prescribed oil and fluid maintenance and face premature, expensive component repair or replacement. Fail to replace brake pads promptly when the wear indicators start emanating their high-pitched, fingernails-to-the-chalkboard screech, and be prepared to replace a set of rotors along with the replacement pads. Run consistently low tire pressure, and be rewarded with early sidewall failure. The potential scenarios are endless, but they very rarely have a happy ending. No room for miracles, here!

O.K., one more: Wait until the Timing Belt shears off its teeth?due to the usual and customary degradation of its rubber and fiber composition?on most any overhead-cammed engine sporting an ?interference? design, (which, by the way, allows valve-to-piston contact in the event that the crankshaft gets sufficiently out-of-synch with the camshaft, such as when a timing belt fails. Why engineers ever thought it prudent to employ, neigh, even popularize such a design is a topic for a completely separate rant in itself!), and don?t even THINK that a tow to the repair shop and a timing belt replacement is all it will take to make the engine ?as good as new?!

So, WHY wouldn?t I have wanted to hear evidence that valve-to-piston damage had occurred. I mean, wouldn?t that have just served the customer right, for being so uninformed, inattentive, out of touch with reality, and/or just too (expletive deleted) cheap to have dealt more proactively with a ?predictable? machine? Virtually always, my answer to that question would have to be ?YES?.

But there are always exceptions to every rule. Without boring you with the sob-story details, this was one of them. I?d tried to convince her to bring the car in sooner for needed maintenance?including TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT, but she said the following week was the best she could do. Her uncaring, unfeeling machine, of course, didn?t know any better.

Now, I?ve been in the position to advise a number of people whose VEHICULAR circumstances were similar to hers. More than one of them NEVER had the timing belt, or other similarly critical job done, managed to drive their vehicle for another year or more without incident, and sold, traded-in or otherwise conveniently disposed of their terminal-but-still-functional ride without suffering adverse consequences. Knowing those people?s PERSONAL circumstances, though, I certainly wouldn?t have felt pity for them if they had suffered the fate I?d predicted.

Our gal with the Honda and the ?ironclad excuse?, on the other hand, was truly a victim of ?bad luck?, and my heart went out to her.

I told her?actually, REMINDED her?about the likelihood of facing a costly engine repair. I had been a Honda-only tech for almost ten years previously, and had NEVER seen such a failure that didn?t result in engine damage. I figured she stood better odds of winning the Lottery than getting out of this situation with just a tow and belt replacement. But, as I always did before just arbitrarily removing the cylinder head and setting about making the repairs, I said I?d install a new belt and attempt to start and run the engine. I offered that, since her personal circumstances were so exceptional, maybe the actual mechanical circumstances involving the belt failure in her car might be exceptional, too.

?MECHANICAL CIRCUMSTANCES?? I later thought, pondering what I considered the absurdity of the use of that term. ?IT?S GOING TO TAKE A MIRACLE!!?

Would you believe that that engine started and actually ran ?AS GOOD AS NEW??!! Somewhat in disbelief, I pulled the spark plugs and performed a compression test, just to put some numbers next to my initial judgment. PERFECT!

A ?miracle?, by definition, is an extraordinary event?sometimes the result of Divine Intervention. To be sure, what I experienced with that Honda was indeed an ?extraordinary event?. Were there explainable ?mechanical circumstances? that made this ?miracle? possible? Well, all of my previous experience told me there just HAD to be, didn?t there? It did however seem that the usual law of cause and effect had been suspended; that one plus one did NOT equal two. One thing was for sure:

It couldn?t have happened to a more deserving customer.

Aspirin Linked With Lower Skin Cancer Risk

Aspirin, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help to prevent against skin cancer, a new study in the journal CANCER suggests.

The study, which included the health information of about 200,000 people, was conducted by researchers from the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.

They found that people in the study who had more than two NSAID prescriptions had a 15 percent lower risk for squamous cell carcinoma, a kind of skin cancer, as well as a 13 percent lower risk for malignant melanoma, a deadly form of the cancer. This is compared with people who only filled two or fewer NSAID prescriptions.

The decreased skin cancer risk was especially pronounced when the people took them for at least seven years, and with "high-intensity use," researchers said in the study.

Researchers did not see a general decreased risk of basal cell carcinoma with NSAID prescriptions, though there was a decreased risk for this kind of cancer on parts of the body that aren't usually exposed to the sun.

"The mechanism of action is not totally clear, but it's thought to be due to their anti-inflammatory effects," Dr. Josh Zeichner, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, told ABC News. He noted that inflammatory enzymes may contribute to cancer growth by feeding tumors.

However, more research is needed to confirm the effects of NSAIDs on skin cancer, he told ABC News.

Earlier this year, two other studies came out showing aspirin could help fight against other cancers. Reuters reported on a small Lung Cancer study, which showed that taking aspirin twice a week, at least, may lower lung cancer risk in women.

And Medical News Today reported on a British Journal of Cancer study, showing that aspirin may help people with colon cancer to live longer.

However, HuffPost blogger Dr. Julie Chen, M.D., an integrative medical doctor, wrote in a blog post last month that a daily aspirin may not be right for everyone, and that people should consult with their doctors before starting the habit.

She wrote:

You should also keep in mind that just because baby aspirin was at one point in your life appropriate for you, it may not always be appropriate if you have new diseases or conditions, or are on new medications. So you should always double check about your medications with your physician at your yearly physical to make sure that the medications you are on are still appropriate for your medical status.

Haneke's 'Amour' wins top prize at Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? The Cannes Film Festival rewarded one of its favorite directors Sunday, as Michael Haneke won the top prize for a second time with his stark film about love and death, "Amour."

The Austrian director's powerful and understated film stars two French acting icons ? 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva and 81-year-old Jean-Louis Trintignant ? as an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health.

Cannes jury member Jean Paul Gaultier praised the performances of the two actors and the "incredible connection" they established in the movie.

Haneke said he made the film because "I experienced something in my family that touched me." He thanked his wife and ? in a rare personal comment ? said he had promised her "we would never leave each other, like in the film."

Some viewers were surprised by the movie's frank humanity, coming from a master of tightly controlled cinema whose movies often contain sudden bursts of violence.

The director said his reputation for delivering shocks was unjust.

"Journalists always try to stick a label on directors," he said. "For a long time I've been the expert in violence."

But he said a film's style should match its subject matter, not its director, and "this film is about love."

Haneke has brought 10 films to Cannes over the years, including "Funny Games" and "Hidden." He previously won the Palme in 2009 for "The White Ribbon," and is only the seventh director to take the top prize twice.

The festival jury awarded the second-place Grand Prize to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire "Reality," while Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share" won the third-place Jury Prize.

Both have won Cannes prizes before ? Garrone took the Grand Prize for "Gomorrah" in 2008 and Loach won the Palme d'Or in 2006 for "The Wind That Shakes the Barley."

Mexico's Carlos Reygadas was named best director for his surrealism-tinged family story "Post Tenebras Lux."

The best actor prize went to Mads Mikkelsen as a man ostracized by his small-town community when he is accused of child abuse in "The Hunt."

Jury member Ewan McGregor said Mikkelsen had given a beautiful performance whose "wonder is in the subtlety ... but with complete conviction with his character."

Best actress was won jointly by Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan, as friends separated by faith in Romanian movie "Beyond the Hills." Cristian Mungiu's drama of love and faith in a remote Romanian monastery also won the award for best screenplay.

The prize winners were chosen from among 22 contenders by a jury, led by Italian director Nanni Moretti, that included actors Ewan McGregor and Diane Kruger, director Alexander Payne and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Moretti revealed that none of the winners had been a unanimous choice, with several films sharply dividing the jury.

He said the biggest fights had been over Leos Carax's bizarre and episodic "Holy Motors," Ulrich Seidl's sex tourism drama "Paradise: Love" and Reygadas' "Post Tenebras Lux," whose title means "light after the darkness."

British director Andrea Arnold, a juror, said it was a film "which dared to fail and be brave about life."

The 12-day festival has seen plenty of glamour, with the likes of Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appearing both on-screen and on the red carpet.

But in the movies, weighty themes dominated at an event whose French Riviera froth was subdued by several days of unseasonable rain and cold.

Despite a strong American flavor to the festival, U.S. films were shut out apart from Benh Zeitli's "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won the Camera d'Or for best first film.

The jury overlooked Pitt, who plays a cynical mob enforcer in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly," and Kidman as a Southern femme fatale in Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy."

Payne said it would be wrong to draw any conclusions about the state of a nation's cinema "based on one tiny snapshot."

Other much-praised performances at the festival included Marion Cotillard's tragedy-struck killer-whale trainer in "Rust and Bone," newcomer Paul Brannigan's scrappy Glasgow lad in "The Angels' Share," and Denis Lavant, as a performer who takes on a host of bizarre personas in "Holy Motors."

Google+ versus Facebook: It?s the apps, stupid!

With Facebook now public and sitting on a huge pile of cash, let?s turn the conversation to the social network?s most pressing competitor, Google. Google and Google+ don?t appear to present much of a threat to Facebook, but the game board was reset on Friday and tactics at both companies will change accordingly. Now Facebook has to find a way to grow revenue and users and will increasingly bump up against Google?s huge advantages in search and apps. For Facebook to achieve its goals, the company will have to enter both spaces with gusto.

Google has learned how to leverage its strengths and suddenly one of those strengths is Facebook?s success. Now that Facebook is a $100 billion company, it doesn?t hurt Google to be number two in that space. Who else is? Pinterest? Instagram? Twitter? None of those services offer a full-fledged social network for those who do want a Facebook alternative, and some people will.

There?s nothing that unique at Google+ to cause people to leave Facebook for it. But there are compelling reasons why publishers might decide they need to make use of it, chiefly for search rankings. If the publishers think they?ll get better rankings, they?ll help push it along, which means Google+ will continue to grow whether people actually use it or not.

In January, for example, Google added a new box promoting people who are on Google+. If you?re not on Google+, you can?t appear in the box. Do a search for ?music,? and someone like Britney Spears was showing up. The following week, Lady Gaga ? who ignored Google+ up until that point and so didn?t appear in the box ? joined. Search for music today, there?s Lady Gaga.

That?s a game changer. Google has used the attraction of its search page to convince publishers to effectively jump start its social network. It probably won?t overtake Facebook. It might always remain a distant second to Facebook. But it has given Google a much more viable competitor than ever before. And if you?re a publisher, you want to be part of it, because it has a huge impact on your visibility in Google search.

The guy who really gets this is Danny Sullivan over at Search Engine Land.

Google has other apps it can leverage like GMail, for example, and Google Docs. And of course there?s basic search, itself. Looking at GMail as an example, it has been in Facebook?s interest to keep users communicating inside the social network rather than extending relationships outward through a mail client where they?d risk escaping from Facebook entirely, talking among themselves. In its new role as a grownup, however, Facebook will ultimately have to face the external mail needs of its members it if intends to continue subscriber growth, so I?d look for some sort of FMail service with clever social media hooks.

Of course the most obvious way for Facebook to take it to Google would be in basic search, but that?s where I?d see Facebook playing a similar card to Google and accepting number two status in search by acquiring Bing from Microsoft. This makes sense for both companies since it would probably happen as a stock deal with Microsoft increasing its Facebook holdings (and influence). For Facebook buying Bing this week would cost a lot less than it would have last week, since it can pay with bloated stock.

There?s no do-or-die in this, but Facebook and Google are lining-up as each other?s main enemies and in order to compete each will start to look a lot more like the other.

Powerful "Flame" cyber weapon found in Iran

BOSTON (Reuters) - Security experts discovered a highly complex computer virus in Iran and the Middle East that they believe was deployed at least five years ago to engage in state-sponsored espionage.

Evidence suggest that the virus, dubbed Flame, may have been built on behalf of the same nation that commissioned the Stuxnet worm that attacked Iran's nuclear program in 2010, according to Kaspersky Lab, the Russian cyber security software maker that claimed responsibility for discovering the virus.

Kaspersky researchers said they have yet to determine whether Flame had a specific mission like Stuxnet, and declined to say who they think built it.

Iran has accused the United States and Isreal of deploying Stuxnet.

Cyber security experts said the discovery provides new evidence to the public to show what experts privy to classified information have long known: that nations have been using pieces of malicious computer code as weapons to promote their security interests for several years.

"This is one of many, many campaigns that happen all the time and never make it into the public domain," said Alexander Klimburg, a cyber security expert at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs.

A cyber security agency in Iran said on its website on Monday that Flame bore a "close relation" to Stuxnet, the notorious computer worm that attacked that country's nuclear program in 2010 and is the first publicly known example of a cyber weapon.

Iran's National Computer Emergency Response Team also said Flame might be linked to recent cyber attacks that officials in Tehran have said were responsible for massive data losses on some Iranian computer systems.

Kaspersky Lab said it discovered Flame after a U.N. telecommunications agency asked it to analyze data on malicious software across the Middle East in search of the data-wiping virus reported by Iran.

STUXNET CONNECTION

Experts at Kaspersky Lab and Hungary's Laboratory of Cryptography and System Security who have spent weeks studying Flame said they have yet to find any evidence that it can attack infrastructure, delete data or inflict other physical damage.

Yet they said they are in the early stages of their investigations and that they may discover other purposes beyond data theft. It took researchers months to determine the key mysteries behind Stuxnet, including the purpose of modules used to attack a uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, Iran.

"Their initial research suggest that this was probably written by the authors of Stuxnet for covert intelligence collection," said John Bumgarner, a cyber warfare expert with the non-profit U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit think tank.

Flame appears poised to go down in history as the third major cyber weapon uncovered after Stuxnet and its data-stealing cousin Duqu, named after the Star Wars villain.

The Moscow-based company is controlled by Russian malware researcher Eugene Kaspersky. It gained notoriety in cyber weapons research after solving several mysteries surrounding Stuxnet and Duqu.

Their research shows the largest number of infected machines are in Iran, followed by the Israel/Palestine region, then Sudan and Syria.

The virus contains about 20 times as much code as Stuxnet, which caused centrifuges to fail at the Iranian enrichment facility it attacked. It has about 100 times as much code as a typical virus designed to steal financial information, said Kaspersky Lab senior researcher Roel Schouwenberg.

GATHERING DATA

Flame can gather data files, remotely change settings on computers, turn on PC microphones to record conversations, take screen shots and log instant messaging chats.

Kaspersky Lab said Flame and Stuxnet appear to infect machines by exploiting the same flaw in the Windows operating system and that both viruses employ a similar way of spreading.

That means the teams that built Stuxnet and Duqu might have had access to the same technology as the team that built Flame, Schouwenberg said.

He said that a nation state would have the capability to build such a sophisticated tool, but declined to comment on which countries might do so.

The question of who built flame is sure to become a hot topic in the security community as well as the diplomatic world.

There is some controversy over who was behind Stuxnet and Duqu.

Some experts suspect the United States and Israel, a view that was laid out in a January 2011 New York Times report that said it came from a joint program begun around 2004 to undermine what they say are Iran's efforts to build a bomb. That article said the program was originally authorized by U.S. President George W. Bush, and then accelerated by his successor, Barack Obama.

A U.S. Defense Department spokesman, David Oten, declined to comment on Flame on Monday, saying it may take "some time" because of the U.S. Memorial Day holiday.

The CIA, the State Department, the National Security Agency, and the U.S. Cyber Command declined to comment.

Hungarian researcher Boldizsar Bencsath, whose Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security first discovered Duqu, said his analysis shows that Flame may have been active for at least five years and perhaps eight years or more.

"The scary thing for me is: if this is what they were capable of five years ago, I can only think what they are developing now," Mohan Koo, managing director of British-based Dtex Systems cyber security company.

Chemoradiotherapy has benefits for older lung cancer patients

Adding low-dose carboplatin to radiotherapy prolongs the survival of elderly people with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), according to a Lancet Oncology study published online this week (22 May 2012).

Despite more than two-thirds of lung cancer cases being diagnosed in people aged 65 years or older, there have been few trials in this age group and it is not known if chemoradiotherapy is suitable for elderly patients, say the authors.

Researchers from the Japan Clinical Oncology Group randomly assigned 200 patients aged 71 years or older with stage III NSCLC, which could not be removed by surgery, to low-dose carboplatin plus radiotherapy or radiotherapy alone.

Patients given chemoradiotherapy had a median overall survival of 22.4 months, compared with 16.9 months for those given radiotherapy alone (hazard ratio 0.68, 95.4 per cent confidence interval 0.47?0.98, P=0.0179). This magnitude of survival advantage for chemoradiotherapy is unexpectedly large, according to the authors of an accompanying editorial (ibid) (see Panel).

More than half of patients who received chemoradiotherapy experienced haemotological toxic effects, including leucopenia and neutropenia, compared with none in the radiotherapy group. According to Fiona MacLean, lead pharmacist in cancer care at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, this increased toxicity makes chemoradiotherapy a challenge to administer to elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities.

Although the study authors recommend that the combined therapy should be considered, Ms MacLean said: "Implementation of daily concurrent chemoradiation for 20 days would present logical challenges for cancer centres and, indeed, the patients would need to be committed to being present in the treatment location for a considerable time each day.

"The timing of the carboplatin dose is one hour prior to radiotherapy and such a change would impact on both pharmacy and radiotherapy services."

The study authors point out that previous studies have shown that median survival for patients who receive combined therapies hovers around 17 months ? the same as the median survival achieved in the present study with radiation alone. They say: "An important question is why was survival better in [this trial] than in prior studies . . . It is possible that selection of a relatively healthy cohort of older patients, or those with less advanced stage III disease, might have led to the improved survival noted in the present study.

"In this case, the results of the study may not be valid for the broader population of older patients with stage III NSCLC".

Lead pharmacist in cancer care at NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Fiona MacLean also questioned whether the study population was representative of UK patients.

Electric Providers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania Offer Great NJ ...

Having the ability to decide how much you want to pay for your electricity is a great way to help manage your budget. Whether you are gearing up for the warm summer months ahead or just trying to limit expenses, there are many New Jersey electric providers to choose from that can help you save money on your electric bill. There are several New Jersey electric providers that have created a very competitive market helping customers lower their New Jersey electricity rates.

Pennsylvania electric suppliers are also offering consumers competitive electric rates helping to lower millions of customer's electric bills each month. There is no longer a reason to keep the utility for your supply and delivery services when you can lower your electric supply charges by choosing a competitive New Jersey Electric Provider or Pennsylvania electric provider.

As the summer approaches and you plan to be using more electricity for your air conditioning and fans, you want to be sure you are getting the best rate available. Choices for your supplier can help you control this expense during the warmer months of summer just as they do in the winter season. To switch electric suppliers in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, you need to compare the rates being offered, the type of rate it is (fixed or variable), and then simply select a plan and supplier that offers you the best rate.

By selecting a competitive electric supply rate, you can save a significant amount of money each month depending upon your household or business usage. In addition to saving money, there are no fees to switch to a new electric supplier in Pennsylvania or New Jersey and you will continue to receive your bill from the utility you currently have.

For business customers, you typically want to get quotes from various suppliers or use an online service that can provide the best rates available from top electric suppliers in your area. You can typically either get a fixed or variable rate with fixed rate contracts being the most popular option. These contracts are generally for 6, 12, 24 or 36 months and some can be even longer. However, 12 and 24 months are usually the most popular terms for businesses as the rates are better in the shorter terms.

Today, deregulation has allowed customers the "power to choose" their electric supplier and receive competitive rates. For residents, you can simply make the switch to a new supplier at any time.

In today?s economy, consumers want to save money especially on energy bills. Many states today are deregulating their electric and gas markets and creating a competitive environment for new electric suppliers to help customers save on electric supply charges while the utility continues to deliver the power. To compare residential rates or receive a business quote, visit Make the Switch USA at www.maketheswitchusa.com.

Indy 500 heat 1 for record books? Maybe, maybe not

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Just how hot was the Indianapolis 500? Well, that depends.

Tens of thousands of fans glistening with sunscreen and toting coolers filled with ice and water descended on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday amid speculation that it would be the hottest day in the 101-year history of the race.

Track officials announced just before 2:30 p.m. that the temperature had hit 93 degrees, which would break the record of 92 set in 1937.

But the National Weather Service in Indianapolis listed the official temperature at 90, and The Weather Channel had the mercury at a balmy 89 degrees.

Official highs and lows for Indianapolis are recorded at Indianapolis International Airport. National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Dahmer said the temperature at the speedway likely was higher because of the amount of pavement, the heat generated by the cars and the number of people gathered in such a small area.

Track officials had spent much of the week warning fans to take precautions against temperatures that were predicted to reach the mid-90s and generate a heat index of 100 degrees. The speedway brought in portable misters and cooling fans, and spokesman Doug Boles said medical staff expected to treat more than 1,000 people during the day.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda said he was glad to be in the air conditioning for his first Indy 500 - and felt for the race drivers.

"With the equipment they wear, it's going to be tough. It's going to be really tough," Lasorda said. "I feel sorry that they have to do it when it's this hot, too."

Many fans sought relief wherever they could find it.

The heat and cloudless skies sent John Genenbacher of St. Louis under the concrete and aluminum grandstands about midway through the race to get some shade. But he said this was his 39th trip to the race and that the hot day didn't discourage the group of about 40 people who attend the race together.

He said a steady breeze the kept flags flapping helped a lot.

"It doesn't seem as hot as it was a couple years ago," Genenbacher said. The race-day high hit 89 degrees in 2009.

Susan Binder of Columbus, Ind., headed under a tent for some infield tailgating with family members after watching the first 25 laps of the race from her seat along the main straightaway. She planned to head back for the final laps of her first Indy 500.

"It was way hot but the breeze was really helping," she said. "We're trying to stay cool down here."

Laurie Smith, 47, of Fishers, Ind., and her 14-year-old son, C.J., weren't fazed by the forecast.

Smith packed hats, bottles equipped with fans and misters and collapsible coolers that included plastic bags containing a damp washcloth and ice to cool down their necks. She also had a secret weapon: a black umbrella.

Smith said she's taken the umbrella on outings to amusement parks and other places to provide shade on hot days, but this was the first time in her four trips to the 500 that she'd brought it to the track.

"It brings (the temperature) down maybe five, six degrees," she said. "It makes it just a little cooler."

Some fans, though, opted to sit this one out.

Paula Jarrett, 52, of New Palestine, Ind., just east of Indianapolis, has attended nearly every race for the last decade, and her husband, David Hill, has been going for about 20 years. They've sat through unseasonably cold days, heat waves and even severe thunderstorms in 2004 that spawned tornadoes in the city.

"We usually never miss a race," Jarrett said. "We've been at the track before when it's 55 and rainy and you're freezing your rear off and drinking hot chocolate and wishing the sun would come out, and we've been out there and fried in the sun."

This year, though, they decided to sell their tickets high in the third turn after seeing the forecast of record temperatures and heat indexes of 100 degrees.

Even on a cooler day, Jarrett said, the sun is "in your face all afternoon long. It's just hot as Hades up there. You're packed in with all those people up there. You can't keep sunscreen on."

The couple found takers for all four of their tickets. Jarrett said her husband had some "seller's remorse" and acknowledged they would miss seeing the action in person, Still, she said sitting this one out wasn't all bad.

"There's something to be said for staying at home and listening to it on the radio," she said.

Seattle Pacific's Brittany Aanstad wins NCAA javelin title

PUEBLO, Colo. ? When Brittany Aanstad's next-to-last javelin throw hit the ground, the Seattle Pacific senior's first thought was that she would at least get one more try to win the national title.

She got that last try ? but didn't actually need it.

Aanstad's fling of 168 feet, 1 inch on Saturday put her on top of the podium at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.

"I'm as excited as heck ? it was a long time coming," Aanstad said.

It was redemption and then some for the Falcons star, who entered last season's nationals as the top seed but finished second.

Aanstad's performance eclipsed the 25-year-old Seattle Pacific school record of 167-2, set by Anita Sartin in 1987. It beat the Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark of 163-6 set by Western Washington's Monika Grusezki at last year's NCAAs. It also bettered the 'B' standard for next month's U.S. Olympic trials.

The NCAA title was Seattle Pacific's first since Jessica Pixler won the third of her three 1,500-meter titles in 2010. The last javelin champion for the Falcons was Michelle DeVries in 1990.

Among other results, Western Washington freshman Katie Reichert earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the women's javelin (season-best 152-5).

More Huskies headed to nationals

AUSTIN, Texas ? Washington padded its NCAA finals roster on the last day of NCAA West Prelims, with seven more Huskies making the cut.

Washington got outright victories from Megan Goethals (women's 5,000, 15 minutes, 46.82 seconds) and J.J. Juilfs (men's pole vault, 17-8 ?), while Katie Flood (women's 1,500, 4:17.05), A.J. Maricich (men's high jump, 7-2 ?), and the men's 4x100-meter relay (Sam Rucker, James Alaka, Maurice McNeal, Ryan Hamilton, 39.98) also marched on.

Alaka, who previously qualified in the men's 100, also punched his nationals ticket in the 200 (20.61).

The Washington State women's 400 relay ran the third-best time in school history (44.92) to advance to the NCAAs.

Baseball

Washington (30-24, 13-26 Pac-12) did its best to keep alive its NCAA tournament hopes by beating Washington State (27-28, 11-18), 5-2, for the second straight day at Husky Ballpark.

Brandon Kizer pitched eight innings, allowing five hits, one walk and one unearned run while striking out six as Seattle University (23-29) edged Portland, 2-1, at Bellevue College's Courter Field.

? Andy Hunter allowed one run on four hits in eight innings, and Gonzaga (34-22, 14-10 West Coast) scored 10 runs in the third inning of an eventual 17-1 victory over Brigham Young in Provo, Utah.
