?You-know-who would have loved to join us.? ?Hah, yeah.? ?Well, we might be friendly, but she?ll never be in our inner?? ?No, she won?t be anything.? ?Well, we might be friends, bot not friends-friends.? [Silence] ?Look, I?d like to like my brother?s wife?? ?She is your sister-in-law!? ?But I don?t like her.?
?
?I can?t let you buy that. It just added about 20 lbs to you!?
?
?I need to stop eating bread.? ?Mom, you look fine.? ?A bathing suit! At my age? Who was I kidding? ?Mom, you look fine.?
?
?I am so tired of dealing with him.? ?I don?t know. Have you thought about couples counseling?? ?I think we?re past that point.?
?
?Gosh, is totally awkward if I leave this door open? How else can you see me?? ?No, I think it?s fine. We?re all women in here.?
Part of my weekend involved searching for a blazer. Specifically, a navy blue blazer. And my travels took me to a fitting room where I had a bit of an extended stay?I might have picked up more than just a blazer which naturally required some preening in front of a mirror and assessing fit, style, and color. In between various stages of undress, conversations unfolded all around me. It seemed that I was unusual in that I was one of the few women there without a shopping partner to give me feedback on my potential purchases. Or advice on relationships. Or possible next steps in negotiating some dilemma.
The fitting room presents an unusual space: It offers the individual a private space even while placing her intimately close to strangers?unlike say, a gym locker room where private space may not exist. There is a recognition that this a safe space, a gendered space, and to some degree, a reflective space. As we stand in front of that mirror and acknowledge that a cute floral print looks better on the rack than it does on our hips, we?re already engaged in a personal assessment. And if our shopping partner?s assessment agrees with our own?no matter how it might hurt to hear it out loud?then perhaps the door is opened for more personal discussions. The foundation for trust is laid and reinforced:
?Oh, wow! I thought that material might make you look heavy, but you?re stunning!? ?Really, you think so?? ?No, seriously. Like, wow.? ?Matt might like it?? ?He?d be crazy not to! Are things still weird? ?Yeah.? [Silence] ?Why isn?t this working?? ?But it is! You look great.? [Laughs] ?No, Matt.? ?You might have outgrown each other.? ?This is cute. Maybe with a leather jacket?? ?Yeah, maybe. Do you have one?? ?Matt does. And I?m the one who typically wears it.? ?Yeah, that would lend itself to the ?boyfriend look?.? ?Well, it would if we make it to summer.?
In this case, an article of clothing becomes the vehicle for a discussion about a romantic relationship that appears to be on the rocks. The discussants? tones fluctuated throughout the conversation: high and speculative when talking about fashion and low and sombre when considering Matt.
Granted, you aren?t likely to go shopping with someone you dislike or aren?t close with, much less invite them into the fitting room with you where physical insecurities?in addition to emotional ones?are highlighted. But once there, reflection can occur, and openness is established both in the very real sense of leaving the physical door open to the fitting room and on a more personal level as shopping partners talk about other areas of their lives. These opinions may not necessarily be confined to shopping partners, however. During the course of my fitting room stay, I found myself in the predicament of being trapped in a dress. That is, I realized I?d need a little help with the zipper in order to put the item back on a hanger. Sticking my head out of my space?my door had been shut?I caught the eye of one of the women in the neighboring rooms. ?Sorry to bother you,? I began. ?I?m stuck. Could you lend a hand?? Her eyes widened in understanding. ?Sure. Turn around.? I complied. ?That?s a lovely color on you,? she opined as she free me from the vise-like hold the dress had on me. While it wasn?t an invitation to carry on a longer conversation, it?s clear that boundaries can be different within this space. While you might hesitate to offer an opinion otherwise or ask for help, these behaviors fall within the realm of expectations for this space.
The sameness of the experience may also play a part in encouraging visitors to open up. We are all alloted the same amount of space under the same conditions. We are all exposed in the same ways, which hopefully accounts for whether we see things in the same way:
?I can?t let you buy that. It just added about 20 lbs to you!? ?Yeah, see how it puffs out here?? ?It just doesn?t hang right.? ?It makes me look older too.? ?Put that in the ?No? pile.?
This agreement suggests it is safe to possibly explore other topics?to solicit advice and to offer it?because an opinion has been offered and vetted. And if you can agree on the suitability of an article of clothing, while you may not necessarily agree other matters, you might at least be willing to listen in this environment because a promise of honesty has been established.
Oh, and that blazer? I did find one! Not in dark blue as I had hoped, but in black with a lovely lining?though I had to go on my opinion alone and unlike some of my fellow shoppers, I left without resolving any of the questions I had going in.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]ContributorNetwork - On the eve of what might turn out to be one of the more critical contests of the Republican nomination race, the polls in Michigan are indicating what amounts to be a dead heat between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Here is a closer look at the latest polling information.
In 1994, Sara McLanahan and Gary Sandefur published,?Growing Up With A Single Parent: What Hurts, What Helps. The growth of children living with only their mothers was ? then as now ? a matter of concern not only for children?s well-being, but for intergenerational mobility. One of their empirical conclusions was this:
For children living with a single parent and no stepparent, income is the single most important factor in accounting for their lower well-being as compared with children living with both parents. It accounts for as much as half of their disadvantage. Low parental involvement, supervision, and aspirations and greater residential mobility account for the rest.
The biggest problem, in other words, is economic. The other factors ? ?involvement, supervision, aspirations, mobility ? are related to social class and the time poverty that economically-poor parents experience.
Examples
Here are some bivariate illustrations ? that is, head-to-head comparisons of the difference between children of poor and non-poor versus single and married parents.
These are the ?skill group? rankings by teachers of children by socioeconomic status (or SES, a composite of parents? education, occupational prestige and income) versus race/ethnicity, gender and family structure. SES shows the widest spread in reading teachers? group placement of first graders.
Source: Condron (2007).
Similarly, the poor/nonpoor difference is greater than the two-parent/single-parent difference in kindergarten entry scores:
Source: Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (2009).
Those are just two examples from early-childhood assessments. More importantly, here is the breakdown seen in a longitudinal study of children growing up.?When women grow up to be mothers, their poverty level in childhood is more important than their family structure for predicting whether they will be in poverty themselves. The poverty difference is large, the family structure difference is not:
Source: Musik & Mare (2006).
This study included a more sophisticated set of multivariate analyses than this simple graph, but the author?s conclusion fits it:
Net of the correlation between poverty and family structure within a generation, the intergenerational transmission of poverty is significantly stronger than the intergenerational transmission of family structure, and neither childhood poverty nor family structure affects the other in adulthood.
That is, childhood poverty matters more.
Fewer single parents, or less poverty?
But if single parenthood and poverty are so closely related, some people say, we should spend hundreds of millions of dollars promoting marriage to help children avoid poverty (and other problems). That?s what the government has done, with money from the welfare budget. Even if it worked, which it apparently doesn?t, it?s only one approach. What about reducing poverty? And, more specifically, reducing the relative likelihood of poverty in single-parent families versus those with married parents. That is, address the poverty gap between the two groups, rather than the size of the two groups. This has the added advantage of?not singling out one group ? single mothers ? for social stigmatization (of the kind I mentioned here). And, because it defines the problem as economic rather than moral, may make it easier to build public support for helping the poor.
Consider a recent paper by?David Brady and Rebekah Burroway, which will be published in?Demography. They analyzed the relative poverty of single mothers versus the total population ? that is, what percentage had incomes below half the median (per person, after accounting for taxes and government transfers). Such a relative poverty measure is really a measure of inequality, but specifically inequality at the low end. (Regardless of how rich the rich are, it?s theoretically possible to have no one below half the median income). Here is my graph showing that result, with only the countries that have reliable sample sizes in the survey:
The Nordic countries have the lowest overall poverty rates. But in absolute terms their advantage is much bigger for single mothers. (The red line shows equal poverty rates for single mothers and the total population.) The US and UK have the largest difference in poverty rates between single mothers and overall poverty. That is, we have the largest poverty penalty for single motherhood. If the relative poverty rates for single mothers were lower in the US, we might spend more time and money addressing poverty and less trying to change family structures.
I used to think that only high school or college students needed career counseling services. Every school I ever attended had some kind of counselor on hand who was supposed to be able to help you find out what you wanted to do with your life. Since I was determined that I wanted to major in finance and work at an investment banking firm, I never bothered to talk to anyone about my future plans. But in college, I found out that the world of high finance wasn?t as appealing as I thought it would be. I ended up getting a generic business administration degree instead, and have been floating from job to job for the past few years.
I?m kind of getting tired of this aimlessness, though, and feel like starting over. But since I?m not sure what I want to do, I figure I might as well find a place that offers career counseling services and talk to someone with experience in this area. At first, I felt a bit odd about considering career counseling services. After all, this seems like the kind of thing I ought to be able to work out on my own. Shouldn?t I already know what I?m interested in? Shouldn?t I be able to tell what kind of job I?d like to have? And if not, can?t I just read a couple of books to help point me in the right direction?
I weighed those arguments, but in the end decided that I should talk to a counselor because of the personalized feedback I?d be able to get from a certified professional. That would likely be worth whatever I had to pay for the career counseling services I received. The only thing left for me to do is find out where I can get career counseling services in this area.
Students that are currently enrolled in high school or college can get free career counseling services, but since that?s not my situation, I have to look for private consultants to talk to. Maybe I can even find career counseling services online these days. I wouldn?t mind filling out a couple of electronic forms and then talking to a counselor via Skype or something like that. That might actually be easier than heading downtown, fighting traffic, and having to pay an arm and a leg for parking.
Watch The Bachelor Season 16 Episode 9 Watch Pretty Little Liars Season 2 Episode 22
Anyway, I just hope whichever counselor I end up talking to can help steer me down the right path. I?m willing to take an interest inventory test or do anything else necessary to facilitate the process. I?m tired of the utter lack of purpose in my professional life and want to get a job that is intellectually stimulating and rewarding. That?s not too much to ask for, is it?

MEXICO CITY?? The world's leading economies worked on Sunday to line up a deal in April on a second global rescue package worth nearly $2 trillion to stop the euro-zone sovereign debt crisis from spreading and putting at risk the tentative recovery.
Germany said it would make a decision sometime in March on strengthening Europe's bailout fund, a move other Group of 20 countries say is essential to clear the way for throwing extra funds into the International Monetary Fund.
The twin proposals would build up massive international resources by the end of April ? when the G20 group next meets ? and convince financial markets they can stem the euro-zone's deep problems.
It would mark their boldest effort since 2008, when the G20 mustered $1 trillion to help rescue the world economy.
British finance minister George Osborne said there would be no additional resources committed to the IMF until euro zone countries bolstered their own efforts to stop contagion.
"We are prepared to consider IMF resources but only once we see the color of the euro zone money and we have not seen the color of the euro zone money," he told Sky TV. "I think that quid pro quo will be clearly established here in Mexico City."
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, whose government has taken a tough public line on aid for Greece, said European leaders will tackle the adequacy of the region's firewall during March. The issue will be debated at a European Union summit next week.
Germany's willingness to discuss the size of Europe's firewall appears to mark an important shift, although Berlin clearly hopes the extra funding will not be necessary and may stick to its guns if financial markets continue to improve.
"The month of March goes from March 1 to March 31. It will be reviewed again, also in the light of the developments that have since occurred, whether the stated dimension of the (European bailout) mechanism is enough or not," Schaeuble told reporters on Saturday.
A government official close to Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday took an even firmer line than Schaeuble's, insisting that there is enough money in the euro zone's rescue fund, known as the European Stability Mechanism.
"The German government's position is unchanged: we see no need to increase the upper limit of the ESM," the official said.
Still, some G20 negotiators are optimistic that Germany will be on board.
"Everyone in the euro zone and even in European Union is reasonably happy with combining the ESM and the EFSF, even Germany, but it is too early to say if this will be decided at the EU summit at the beginning of March," said Margrethe Vestager, economy minister of current EU president Denmark.
The German government faces public opposition to a second Greek bailout, and has balked at enlarging Europe's rescue fund on the grounds that it would undermine efforts to impose fiscal discipline on indebted countries.
The second Greek bailout package, recently agreed in principle, needs the approval of Germany's parliament, the Bundestag. Lawmakers will vote on Monday and it is expected to pass with opposition support but a poll in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday showed 62 percent of Germans oppose further aid for Greece.
An agreement by Europe to merge its temporary and permanent bailout vehicles would create a $1 trillion war chest and open the door for other G20 countries to meet the IMF's request for $500-$600 billion in new resources, on top of its current $358 billion in funds.
Put together, this would total around $1.95 trillion in firepower.
But the G20 has no intention of easing its pressure on Europe by giving it a strong signal now that new IMF money is in the bag. Its communique when two days of ministerial meetings end on Sunday will merely state that the world's leading economies will review the resources of the IMF in April without setting a date for a deal, G20 officials said.
Another official said there was debate between the United States and Europe over whether the communique should say an increase in the firewall was "essential" or just "important" to secure an increase in IMF resources.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Saturday Europe had come a long way in laying the foundations for a "credible" crisis response but could not rest there.
"It's important not to rest on that progress... That progress is in part based on expectations of more progress to come," he said.
Others also left no doubt the cash is needed to calm markets and secure economic growth. "In order to overcome the crisis, you have to get ahead of the curve and have a big enough bazooka," said Olli Rehn, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
Japan's Finance Minister, Jun Azumi, said his country stood ready to contribute IMF funds once Europe has acted.
"I expect debate on strengthening of the IMF lending capacity will progress on condition that the problem of Europe's debt crisis is put to an end by the G20 meeting in Washington in April," he said.
Finance chiefs in their communique on Sunday will also cite rising oil prices driven by geopolitical risks as a threat to a tentative world recovery that is showing signs of strength, diplomatic sources said.
The price of oil vaulted over $125 a barrel on Friday, the highest level in nearly 10 months on concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Oil-producing members of the G20 said on Saturday they would take measures to avoid a rise in petroleum prices from hurting the world economy, Italy's deputy economy minister said.

If your are bothered by chapped lips, you can easily create your own lip balm at home. Shred a cucumber and mix it with sour cream and honey. Gently apply the mixture to your lips and allow it to rest for up to fifteen minutes. After this, rinse it out with water and finish with some almond oil for moist lips.
Sunscreen-enhanced moisturizers are essential for battling wrinkles with your skin care strategy. Sunlight can really harm your face and cause premature wrinkles. You can easily protect your delicate face from the sun by putting on a moisturizer that contains sunscreen.
Get plenty of sleep. You skin is affected by the amount you sleep. No sleep can produce dark circles under the eyes, and make your skin dull and washed out. You can also develop more frequent breakouts. You will feel well rested, and you will have better skin.
It?s easy to make a skin mask at home. Form a smooth paste out of olive oil, raw almonds, and milk. Also ground up some orange peels and add them. Apply this to your face, and leave it there for around 15 minutes. After this time has passed, you should gently wash the paste off your face, and get an ice cube to rub on your face.
Any time that you notice stubborn skin issues that you did not have before, you should see your dermatologist. Any skin issue that can?t be resolved at home with a few tried and true methods deserves a trip to the dermatologist. Always consult with an expert when you have exhausted basic good skin care practice to no avail.
If your skin is very sensitive, you should always use a fresh razor. By using a dull, old razor, you increase the risk of your skin becoming irritated. This can lead to razor burn, chafing, and painful bumps. A good razor will run smoothly over your skin without any discomfort.
Understand your skin type so that you can better choose a skin care routine. By targeting products that affect your skin type, you can avoid unnecessarily using the wrong treatments. If you have any doubts about your personal skin type, visit a dermatologist to get help learning the type of skin you have so you can get on the right track of caring for it.
As was mentioned in the beginning of this article, skin care is very important and gathering the best information to apply to your skin care regimen can be challenging. After developing a web site for a business, the next essential step is to promote it. This promotional task can be very much daunting. It does not comprise one but many services which need to be taken care of simultaneously. Fortunately there is a solution to this trouble- link popularity services.
Links play a crucial role in promoting a web site and acquiring connections for it. In fact, links serve as a getaway to success. Links are an effective web site promotion technique. Therefore, it has to be at its appealing best. It should be to the point. The content should be such that it conveys what a site is about in the first glance to the visitors.
A link building company is responsible for creating good quality and relevant links. It then posts these links on the sites which are similar to your site. New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use
To be a successful bodybuilder, you must use a nutrition plan that is effective to get the desired result. Bodybuilders that do weight training must understand that they are placing their body under higher than normal amounts of physical stress.
Additional supplements, and greater nutritional intake, are required when doing this level of exercise on a regular basis. Your bodybuilding activities and goals could be compromised if you learn the wrong information when you start out. In fact, even experienced bodybuilders can receive misinformation regarding important nutritional information. What follows are a few key elements that will help you develop a balanced nutrition plan.
It?s a good idea to keep track of your overall caloric intake. Naturally, it?s also important where your calories come from, and one of the best types of nutrients you should be eating are carbohydrates of the lean or healthy variety. The idea is to seek carbs that are high quality and that don?t contain much fat. These type of foods will help your body use glucose in the most efficient way possible. While this practice helps you build muscle while losing fat, you have to be sensible about it. Since bodybuilders are working to increase muscle while reducing fat, they can?t afford to starve themselves of nutrients, including carbs. As a bodybuilder, you have to pay close attention to the number of carbohydrates that you take in. How many you ingest every day will depend on your specific goals. It?s easy to either get more carbs than you need or not enough, and this is an individual matter. There are certain general guidelines that tell you how many carbs you should eat relative to your weight, such as 2 grams for every pound. But if you?re trying to lose -or gain- a significant amount of weight, you?d have to make adjustments. Eating more protein and a moderate number of carbs is a good formula for adding muscle and losing fat. If you don?t want to reduce your weight, which may include muscle mass, make sure your body isn?t starved for carbs. It?s all a matter of finding the right balance.
Your muscle mass will actually diminish if you do not eat enough protein each day. Instead of gaining muscle mass, you are actually going to lose it which is a problem.
Bodybuilders must always know what they are doing with their nutritional plan. If you find that you are eating something and not sure why, then it is imperative to know why you are eating it. When you do this, you may have a setback in your appearance and performance plans.

An iPhone, an inconspicuous dental retainer, and a pierced tongue may soon be all that's required to drive around a wheelchair or control a computer mouse, according to new research.
The breakthrough is aimed at improving life for people afflicted with high-level spinal cord injuries and is considered a major upgrade to the so-called Tongue Drive system?under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The custom-molded dental retainer contains magnetic field sensors mounted on its four corners that detect the movement of a tiny magnet attached to the user's tongue. The system can interpret seven different tongue moves to drive a wheelchair or surf the Web.
In earlier versions of the system, the sensors that track the movement of the magnet were mounted on a headset worm by the user. Whenever the headset shifted, the whole system needed to be recalibrated.
"Because the dental appliance is worn inside the mouth and molded from dental impressions to fit tightly around an individual's teeth with clasps, it is protected from these types of disturbances,"?Maysam Ghovanloo, a Georgia Tech engineer, explained in a news release.
Signals from the retainer are transmitted to an iPhone or iPod containing software that interprets the user's tongue commands by determining the position of the magnet. The Apple gadget is attached to the wheelchair using a custom interface.?
Preliminary tests indicate an increased sensitivity in the new system that may open the door for additional commands.?
The team has recruited 11 individuals with high-level spinal injuries to test drive the system. Each had their tongue pierced and were given a tongue stud that has a tiny magnet embedded in the upper ball. So far, it appears worthwhile.
"Users have been able to learn to use the system, move the computer cursor quicker and with more accuracy, and maneuver through the obstacle course faster and with fewer collisions," Ghovanloo said.
In addition to funding by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.
Other research groups are skipping the tongue and moving straight to tapping brain waves to control robotic arms and drive cars.

T.I., Young Jeezy and Fabolous also enjoyed success in 2011 but fell short of MTV News' top 10. By Rob Markman
J. Cole Photo: C. Brandon/ Redferns
MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game debate isn't solely about the 10 MCs who make the hotly contested list.
Before MTV News' Hip-Hop Brain Trust convenes at the roundtable, each member submits his or her own individual list of 10 MCs they'd like to nominate for the discussion. After all of the nominees are tallied, approximately 20 rappers are taken into consideration; the artists with the most nominations are weighted at the top.
So outside the 10 chosen, MTV had a handful of other MCs to consider based on a combination of criteria like impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, style (commonly referred to as swag) and the intangibles. Though Maybach Music Group's Wale eventually had his #10 spot cemented, many were considered.
Now, MTV News presents our Hottest MCs honorable mentions:
J. Cole J. Cole had a phenomenal 2011. His debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, has gone gold and yielded a platinum single with "Work Out." Cole, who was once an underground favorite, broadened his fanbase by touring with Rihanna on her Loud Tour.
T.I. Tip might have gotten off to a late start, since he was released from prison at the very end of September, but the King of the South wasted no time getting back into the swing of things. Immediately after finishing his bid, Tip jumped on some of the hottest songs in rap, creating his own remixes to 2 Chainz's "Spend It," Future's "Magic" and the Throne's "N---as in Paris." Tip capped it all off on New Year's Day when he dropped his F--- Da City Up mixtape.
Eminem Last year, Eminem stood as the #1 Hottest MC in the Game. It was hard to deny him after 2010's Recovery dominated the charts. Em's lyrical ability is never a question, and in 2011, King Mathers once again proved that very few (if any) can match him on the mic. Rather than churn out the commercial smashes he is known to make, Em took things back to the underground and hooked up with Royce Da 5'9" for their fan-favorite Bad Meets Evil EP Hell: The Sequel.
Young Jeezy It may have taken the Snowman a minute to put out his long-awaited TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition album, but Jeezy wasn't just sitting around twiddling his thumbs. While fans salivated for his major-label release, Young fed the streets with a pair of DJ Drama-helmed mixtapes in 2011. (The Real Is Back and The Real Is Back 2). By the time Jeezy finally released his latest installment from his Thug Motivation series in December, he had earned himself a #1 rap album.
2 Chainz A little artistic reinvention never hurt anybody. The MC formerly known as Tity Boi broke out from his group Playaz Circle and embarked on a solo mission that paid huge dividends. As 2 Chainz, the ATL standout fired up the streets with mixtapes like Codeine Cowboy and T.R.U. Realigion. With street bangers like "Spend It" under his belt, 2 Chainz stood as the poster child for rap's underground and then cashed in when he signed his major-label deal with Def Jam this month.
Fabolous With or without an album, Brooklyn's Fabolous consistently slays his completion. Fab didn't release his Loso's Way 2 LP, but he did serve his fans a dose of that raw with his Christmas Day mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3's. On the tape, Funeral Fab goes in, freestyling over beats made famous by Tyga, Travis Porter and, of course, 2 Chainz. By the end of the 15-track ride, Fab proved that he is eternally hot no matter what his competitors may throw at him.
By the time they reach adulthood, most people are pretty good writers and speakers. At a minimum they understand the fundamentals and try hard to write good copy. Unfortunately, even the best writers sometimes slip up by misusing common words and phrases. This problem is compounded when society begins to accept that new (but improper) usage, and the errors start showing up in dictionaries and other resource material.
Consider this article a refresher course on commonly misused words and phrases. It is by no means comprehensive, however. You may have your own examples?that give you fits; make sure you are constantly reviewing?your material, looking for the types of mistakes you frequently make.
1. Criteria vs. Criterion -
Criteria often gets misused because people don?t realize it is the plural form of a word.
(Data is another such word.)
Use criteria when you refer to a list or group of items.
The criteria for choosing the pump include delivery options, warranty, ease of upgrade, and price.
Our criteria have not changed since last year?s negotiations.
Use criterion when you focus on just one of the variables.
Price is only one criterion we are using to decide which pump to buy.
One criterion is the machine?s ability to cut through inch-thick carbon steel.
2. Inter vs. Intra -
Of the two, inter is used more frequently, and is sometimes mistakenly used in place of intra.
Inter refers to actions between members of different groups.
The Brewers played the Rangers in an inter-league game.
If you are referring to elements of the same group or area, use intra.
The two teams from Marketing faced off in some friendly intra-office rivalry.
Calls from Milwaukee to Oconomowoc and West Bend are considered intra-LATA.
3.Less?vs. fewer -
Express check-out lanes often mention that they accept ?X items or less.? Ooops. Typically, less refers to aggregate amounts while fewer refers to numbers or quantities.
Less waste is generated since we switched to the new process.
The latest model consumes less fuel than earlier versions.
Use fewer when you know the number or quantity.
Twelve fewer people attended this year?s conference.
Our 2005 model has five fewer moving parts.
4. Placement of Question Mark When Working With Quotes -
Improper placement of the question mark creates a confusing sentence, as in:
Have you heard the saying, ?An apple a day keeps the doctor away??
The adage is a statement, not a question. The proper way to write this is:
Have you heard the saying, ?An apple a day keeps the doctor away.??
If the person is asking a question, of course, the question mark is set inside the quotation marks.
?How soon do you expect the package to arrive??
5.Putting only in its place -
Where you place only affects the meaning of your sentence. For example,
I only went to the store.
means that of your planned tasks (going to the store, riding your bike, and planting your garden), all you did was go to the store.
What you meant to say was:
I went only to the store.
In most cases only belongs before a noun rather than a verb.
I want only executives to attend.
She purchased only three copies of the sales guide.
By carefully?proofing your material and regularly reviewing expert source material, you ensure that your writing and speaking continue to project the professional image you want. Happy writing (and speaking)!

Blue light culprit in red tide bloomsPublic release date: 23-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Ellen R. Weiss eweiss@biophysics.org 240-290-5606 American Institute of Physics
San Diego, Calif. Each year, phytoplankton blooms known as "red tides" kill millions of fish and other marine organisms and blanket vast areas of coastal water around the world. Though the precise causes of red tides remain a mystery, a team of researchers in the United States and Spain has solved one of the main riddles about these ecological disasters by uncovering the specific mechanism that triggers phytoplankton to release their powerful toxins into the environment.
"Previous theories about how phytoplankton release toxins proposed a rather awkward, untested 'exudation' mechanism," said researcher Pedro Verdugo of the University of Washington in Friday Harbor. "The true mechanism has been a very exciting riddle to crack and it provides a handle on understanding the development of huge phytoplankton blooms, eventually affecting several square miles of the ocean's upper surface."
Verdugo and his colleagues, Kellie L. Vigna also of the University of Washington and Ivan Quesada of the Universidad Miguel Hernandez in Alicante, Spain, will present their research at the 56th Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society (BPS), held Feb. 25-29 in San Diego, Calif.
Red tides appear when naturally occurring algae including Karenia brevis multiply very rapidly, becoming so concentrated that the ocean surface takes on a reddish hue. Karenia produces brevetoxin, a powerful neurotoxin that binds to nerve and muscle cells, leading to substantial marine life mortality and human morbidity. The blooms are triggered by some as yet unknown fluctuations in ocean temperature, salinity, and available nutrients.
The researchers discovered that Karenia and other unicellular microalgae function very much like the secretory cells we have in our bodies. Namely, they store inside membrane-lined microscopic vesicles their active chemicals such as hormones, antibacterial products, and, in Karenia's case, toxins. When properly stimulated, these cells release their cargo by a process known as exocytosis.
Secretory cells store high concentrations of active chemicals in their vesicles by "caging" them in a gel matrix, as Verdugo's lab discovered more than a decade ago. This trick offers a clever thermodynamic advantage as storage across membrane-lined vesicles would otherwise require large amounts of osmotic work. According to the researchers, these microscopic gels found inside virtually all secretory vesicles remain in a condensed gel phase with their cargo virtually immobilized until they are released from the cell, when they undergo drastic swelling and release their payload. "Swelling results from a polymer gel phase transition, a characteristic property of both natural and synthetic polymer gels, which has been further applied in our lab to engineer high payload drug delivery vesicles," said Verdugo.
The cargo in phytoplankton vesicles are toxins. They are caged in a gel matrix made up of a biopolymer very similar to alginate, one of the constituents of algae cell walls. The researchers discovered that phytoplankton release their toxin-loaded gels when exposed to sunlight, particularly the blue portion of the spectrum.
"We do not know why phytoplankton respond to blue light, but it might be associated with the fact that blue light penetrates deeper in seawater," said Verdugo. "Often, plants and animals release toxins as a defense mechanism. Whether this is the case in phytoplankton remains speculative. However, blue light stimulation implies that these cells must have a photoreceptor most likely associated with the cell structures known as chloroplasts, which are responsible for photosynthesis. This is in fact one of the riddles we'll tackle next."
These observations support the notion that Karenia brevis functions as a typical secretory cell, which the researchers believe opens the way to a better understanding of red tide bloom dynamics.
The presentation, "Exocytic mechanisms of storage and release of brevotoxin in the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis," is at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in the San Diego Convention Center, Hall FGH. ABSTRACT: http://tinyurl.com/6nuttzl
