Correspondent reflections: The 10 news events that shaped 2011

The most widespread popular uprisings in half a century swept across the Arab world, ousting three of the region?s most stalwart autocrats ? in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya ? and opening the door for more representative government.?

So far, that appears to mean a greater voice for Islamists ? those who want Islam to play a greater role in politics.

But the upheaval, still very much under way in Syria and Yemen, could also mean greater instability for an oil-rich region that?s home to key US allies and terrorist groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.?

Dan Murphy covered the uprisings with Kristen Chick?(Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain), Scott Peterson (Libya),?Nicholas Blanford (Syria), Jeb Boone (Yemen), and Erik Stier (Yemen).

Highlights from the Monitor's coverage of the Arab uprisings:

How revolt sparked to life in Tunisia?? by Kristen Chick in Sidi Bouzid and Tunis, Tunisia

How Egyptians toppled Mubarak and who will lead them now ? by Dan Murphy in Cairo

Why the West need not fear Libya's Islamic warriors ? by Dan Murphy in Derna, Libya

Bahrain's calculated campaign of intimidation ? by Kristen Chick in Manama, Bahrain

Q&A with Syrian jihadist: Minorities have nothing to fear in post-Assad Syria ? by Nicholas Blanford in North Lebanon

Divided by Yemen's Saleh: Two brothers fight on opposite sides ? by Jeb Boone in Sanaa, Yemen

Cops check cruelty report at Butterball farm in NC

(AP) ? North Carolina deputies are investigating a farm that raises turkeys for Butterball LLC after an animal rights group said it captured undercover video showing animal cruelty.

Investigators on Thursday looked through the two barns and the roughly 2,000 turkeys inside at the farm in Shannon, near the South Carolina state line.

Deputies say it could be weeks before the investigation is finished.

They came to the farm after Chicago-based Mercy for Animals sent prosecutors three weeks of undercover footage by a member of the group who worked at the farm. The group says the videos show workers throwing, kicking, dragging and beating turkeys.

In a statement, Butterball said it has zero tolerance for abusing animals and is working with deputies.

Leonardo 'not sure' if Beckham will sign for PSG

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:59 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo says he is "not sure" whether the ambitious French club will sign David Beckham from the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Leonardo has made no secret of his admiration for the 36-year-old former England captain, but told a news conference on Friday that there are other factors that may influence whether Beckham joins when the transfer window opens next week.

Leonardo says "it's always been a question of personal matters" for Beckham, rather than contract issues and that "he has his family over there."

Obama to visit swing state Ohio to talk economy (Reuters)

HONOLULU (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will visit the political battleground state of Ohio next week, ushering in the 2012 election year with a speech focused on the economy, the White House said on Thursday.

Obama will visit Cleveland on Wednesday, just after he returns from a more than week-long vacation in Hawaii, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

The president had put off his trip to Hawaii to wait for Congress to extend payroll tax cuts expiring at the end of December, which lawmakers eventually agreed to continue for only two months because of disagreements about how to offset their cost.

Efforts to broker a full-year deal for the payroll tax cuts, which the White House has said the middle class needs until the U.S. economy heals, are expected to hang over Washington in early 2012 and may be a major theme of Obama's Cleveland speech.

The Democrat will also seek to deflect attention from the Republican caucuses in Iowa and draw a contrast between Obama's economic vision and those laid out by potential Republican rivals for the White House in the November vote.

Obama's re-election chances are expected to hinge on the state of the U.S. economy and particularly the jobless rate, which at 8.6 percent is several percentage points higher than before the financial crisis that struck just before he took office.

In Hawaii, Obama has been golfing, spending time at the beach with his wife and daughters, and enjoying dinners with friends. The Obamas went to church on Christmas Day, and on Thursday, they visited the Pearl Harbor memorial.

UFC 141 weigh-in: Diaz weight only minor issue, Overeem absolutely massive at 263

UFC 141 weigh-in: Diaz weight only minor issue, Overeem absolutely massive at 263There was no hat tossing, no pushing or shoving, in fact Donald Cerrone tried to give a gift of sorts to Nate Diaz.

Diaz missed the lightweight limit at 155 pounds and then cut to within one-quarter pound of the allowable 156-pound limit.

Listen here for Kevin Iole's breakdown of the Diaz situation (0:35 mark).

Instead of taking 20 percent of Diaz's purse, as is normally mandated by state commissions, Cerrone agreed to re-work the contract. He also said Diaz didn't have to cut anymore weight.

That's when Cerrone's camp told its fighter to pipe down and asked Diaz to go lose the weight. Diaz did so without any resistance and the most heated fight at UFC 141 is a go.

Many people were in attendance to see massive heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem weigh in. Overeem came in at a career-high 263 pounds. Lesnar, who lost a significant amount of weight during his bouts with diverticulitis, came in at 266. The big man is back.

There were some prefight rumors that the UFC wouldn't have Cerrone and Diaz square off today.

Yesterday's staredown at the final press conference resulted in a near brawl when Diaz flipped Cerrone's cowboy hat from his head. The staredown happened today, but it was brief and UFC president Dana White was between the fighters, who were at a distance.

Trademark Watch: What Is ?Yahoo Axis??

yahooLast Friday, troubled Internet giant Yahoo filed a new trademark application with the USPTO. I can't find any record of an existing Yahoo product or service by the name, so I figured I should just throw it out here for all of you to speculate what the company has up its sleeves. The name, before I forget to mention it, is Yahoo Axis. That will make you none the wiser, but perhaps the classes and descriptions might.

Baseball Stuff I Got For Christmas

All throughout the year my wife insists that it's going to be a small Christmas. "Let's keep it simple, the kids don't need anything, we don't really need anything. We have debt to pay off."

I always heed her wisdom.

Then a couple weeks before Christmas she goes into flat-out gang-buster spend mode.

And I laugh and love her for it.

Aside from all the "necessities" like clothes and socks, and a couple other items like tools and such, here's the baseball stuff she got for me, most of which were stocking stuffers:

Once They Were Angels - Robert Goldman 2006
One of several books I've wanted for a long time. An Angels history book with interviews with some of the most well-known Angels.
Dig that old-time Nolan Ryan picture.Odd Man Out - Matt McCarthy 2009
Angels minor leaguer tell-all, supposedly. I'll take this one with a grain of salt. I know that many of the "facts" in this book have been challenged and many disproved or shown to be exagerated. But it's a must for the Angels library.Always An Angel - Tim Salmon 2010
How can an Angels collector not have a book by Tim Salmon. Now I do. This book has had a reserved space next to my Nolan Ryan books for the last year.
My two most favotorite Angels.

My wife also gave me an Amazon gift card inmy stocking. These are several other books I've had on my want list for a while. Time to see if I can get some crossed off.

Next up- baseball cards.?

Two packs of 2011 Bowman Platinum and 2 packs of Bowman Chrome.
Nice cards but not a single Angel.
Blaster of 2011 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects.? Nice cards but not a single Angel in the box.? Hmmm.

She did well though.? I was Toppsed-out so I put "No Topps, Bowman OK" on my Christmas list.

Be looking for a trade bait post coming soon.

Two?books of stamps for my TTM autograph requests.Mike Napoli Rangers jersey t-shirt.? Yes I actually asked for this.? I go to a lot of Ranger games, and only wear my Angels gear when the Angels are in town.? So I combined the 2 - Nap will always be an Angel in my heart.Baseball Activity Book - goes immediately to my toilet reading rack. Here's a puzzle for you all before this little book gets Red Flagged!

Penn State's Joyner still searching for coach

DALLAS -- Penn State acting athletic director Dave Joyner said Thursday night he's confident the school will be able to attract a quality coaching candidate.

It has been 52 days since Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired amid a child sexual abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

"The search is going fine, in all honesty," said Joyner, who talked to reporters about the coach search for the first time since Nov. 19. "You read the blogs and everything, and I find it interesting, but it's going fine. We're right where I thought we'd be at this point.

"You know me, I don't give up too much. I just believe in keeping it quiet for the coaches that are interviewing and talking to us, out of respect for them."

Sources Tuesday night told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that first-year Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak was the top pick of the six-person search committee, which is led by Joyner.

But Munchak, a former Penn State player, said Wednesday he was not interested in becoming the next head coach at his alma mater. Neither was Boise State's Chris Petersen.

Others known to have interviewed for the vacancy include Nebraska's Bo Pelini; Baylor associate head coach Brian Norwood, a former Penn State assistant; and Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, a native of McKees Rocks.

Wake Forest's Jim Grobe and Duke's David Cutcliffe also have been linked to the job.

Four current Penn State coaches have been interviewed: interim head coach Tom Bradley, quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno, defensive line coach Larry Johnson and linebackers coach Ron Vanderlinden.

"I'd like to get this finished so whoever the head coach is will have time to really interact with the recruits," Joyner said at a media event for the TicketCity Bowl.

National signing day for high school recruits is Feb. 1.

He did not give a specific timetable for reaching a decision and would not talk about how many candidates have been interviewed.

"We have a handful of people that we think are worthy. I still have people contacting me even now, which is interesting, even after this length of time."

An agent who represents a number of major college coaches recently told the Post-Gazette that the Penn State coaching vacancy is a "toxic situation."

But Joyner still believes the school can hit a home run with its hire.

"We're looking at people in a systematic way," he said. "We're looking for a person with the very important qualities that this program has been known for for many, many years."

Coloradans can make money by losing weight

(AP) ? Insurance company Kaiser Permanente Colorado is offering cash to Coloradans to lose weight and keep it off.

Companies have been making similar offers to their employees for years as a way to reduce obesity in the workplace and lower health costs, but Kaiser is taking it one step further and making the offer to any adult in Colorado.

It's one of the first programs in the nation to make such an offer to all adults.

Participants in the "Weigh and Win" program earn anywhere from $15 to $150 every three months to lose weight and keep it off.

Twelve kiosks with scales and a video camera to record progress are located in medical facilities, recreation centers, libraries and even a furniture store throughout the state.

The insurer is spending $500,000 to help jump start the program, which it hopes will eventually be funded by the cities and other health care groups that it's working with.

Kaiser hopes to expand Weigh and Win by adding 10 kiosks next year as part of its community outreach programs.

"Weight loss is as effective as mammograms, or colon cancer screenings or blood pressure control when you speak about the amount of dollars you spend for the life years you gain from the program," said Dr. Eric France, who's in charge of developing the program at the insurer.

"And from the medical perspective, losing about 5 percent body weight is considered valuable and helpful," said France, Kaiser's chief of population care and prevention services.

About 8,900 Coloradans have signed up since the program began in April. The average weight loss has been about 12 pounds.

Tanya Amaro, a pediatrics nurse practitioner at Denver Health Medical Center, checks in every week at the kiosk in the hospital's cafeteria. She began her quest to lose weight last November, losing about 27 pounds on her own, and found that she couldn't lose any more. She has lost an additional 37 pounds through the program, earning her $75 since May.

"It's pretty cool," she said.

She found the grocery store shopping lists; recipes for low-fat, healthy meals; and a workout regime from a personal trainer assigned to her through the program helpful in breaking through the plateau she had reached.

"Not just that I need to walk or I need to run. I knew that stuff, you know, that's commonsense stuff," she said. "It actually tells you how to do it, when to do it. You get text messages on your phone."

France said it's difficult to put a dollar amount on the benefits the program may bring.

"It's not really a medical solution to obesity problems, the obesity epidemic," France said. "It has to be a community solution. It's about access to good food, it's access to places to exercise, places to ride your bicycle, use transit, policies at school, policies at work and opportunities to have supportive programs to help you lose weight."

In Iowa, Obama toils while GOP roars, then departs

(AP) ? One presidential campaign claims an impressive effort in Iowa this year: eight offices opened, 350,000 phone calls to potential supporters and 1,280 events to recruit and train volunteers.

It's not Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul. It's Obama for America, the president's re-election campaign, which badly wants to win this battleground state in November, as it did in 2008.

Next Tuesday's Republican caucus has dominated political conversations. Largely overlooked is that Obama is running unopposed in the Democratic caucus the same night.

It's a dramatically different scene from four years ago, when Obama set his course for the White House by beating John Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton after months of intense campaigning in Iowa.

Obama can coast as far as this year's nomination is concerned. But Iowa remains a general election swing state, and no one assumes his 9-point win here over John McCain in 2008 will give him a cushion next November.

Obama's campaign never entirely left Iowa or several other competitive states, where he hopes relentless organizing can overcome a weak economy and his mixed record of fulfilling campaign pledges in the face of strong GOP opposition in Congress. If thousands of volunteers flocked to Obama's 2008 campaign, this time he's having to work a bit harder to recruit and energize them.

"People say, 'The mood is different this time, it's not the same,'" said Peggy Whitworth, an Obama volunteer in Cedar Rapids. "Well of course it's not the same. But it's not about mood or feeling. It's about the future of the country."

Whitworth, 69, said she joins other Obama volunteers four hours every Tuesday night, and sometimes on other evenings as well, to telephone potential supporters. Many say they will vote for Obama again, she said, and some volunteer to help the campaign. But some are disappointed or angry that the president fell short on campaign promises such as ending the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy, and bringing a greater spirit of bipartisanship to Washington.

"Sometimes they simply want to have someone listen to them," Whitworth said. Most say they will stick with Obama after they've had a chance to vent their frustrations, she said.

Obama lacks some key advantages he enjoyed in 2008. They include a deeply unpopular GOP president who was largely blamed for a faltering economy, and a widespread excitement about Obama's precedent-breaking campaign built on "hope and change."

In exchange, of course, he has the power of the presidency and a well-oiled political organization that has been refining its practices for five years. Obama will raise many millions of dollars, although his eventual Republican opponent may do nearly as well.

Nowhere does Obama have a bigger base to build on than in Iowa, where he campaigned for months in 2007. Romney, Gingrich and other GOP contenders have not made comparable efforts, although they say the economy and other issues will make Obama's task much harder next year.

In activities that rarely compete with the hoopla of the GOP nominating contest, Obama's campaign has placed a handful of paid staffers in each of several key states. They try to leverage their clout by recruiting and training scores of volunteers. The volunteers, in turn, knock on doors, organize house parties and, above all, place phone calls to voters in hopes of identifying likely Obama supporters and tracking them through Election Day.

In a tortoise-versus-hare strategy, Obama supporters hope their steady chugging will build support precinct by precinct, town by town, while Republicans spend resources chasing the nomination for a few more weeks or months. The Republican candidates and their broadcast ads are flooding Iowa this week, but they will abruptly shift to New Hampshire on Jan. 4, the day after the caucuses.

"The Republicans are here today, gone tomorrow," said Obama volunteer Pat Walters, of Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines. "We've been doing this since 2009."

Walters, a 60-year-old insurance executive, said he is a "neighborhood team leader" who helps organize house parties, phone banks and other activities. His chief recruiting tools, he said, involve reminding Iowans of Obama's accomplishments that include expanding medical benefits in the hard-won 2010 overhaul of the nation's health care system.

Walters said he hopes the week-by-week, month-by-month effort will build a strong ground operation to turn out Obama's voters next November. The Republican nominee will have to play catch up, he said.

Obama's ground game "is already in place," Walters said. "It's just a matter of growing it."

Obama campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said the caucus provides another opportunity to tell Iowans about Obama's accomplishments, including ending the Iraq war.

"On Jan. 4, we'll have the strongest grass-roots organization and campaign finance infrastructure in place of any candidate going forward," she said.

Targeted therapy extends progression-free survival of patients with advanced ovarian cancer

"This approach can be looked upon as a third major component of treatment for ovarian cancer and related malignancies," says Robert A. Burger, MD, lead investigator on the GOG study and director of the Women's Cancer Center at Fox Chase Cancer Center. "We've had the combination of surgical management and cytotoxic chemotherapy for many years, but we haven't really seen anything else in terms of a fundamental class of treatment. This represents a new way for us to control the disease."

The placebo-controlled study, which was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, enrolled 1,873 patients with previously untreated advanced disease from 336 sites, primarily in the United States, but also in Canada, South Korea, and Japan. The patients either had stage III ovarian cancer that could not be entirely removed with surgery, or stage IV disease, and were randomly assigned to one of three groups. For patients who received bevacizumab with chemotherapy followed by bevacizumab for up to an additional 10 months, the median time until their cancer progressed was 14.1 months, compared to 10.3 months for patients in the control group, who received chemotherapy with a placebo and then continued with a placebo. The net effect was a 28% reduction in the risk of disease of ovarian cancer progression over time. Patients who received bevacizumab only with chemotherapy, but not afterward, had a median progression-free survival of 11.2 months.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that nearly 22,000 women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011, and more than 15,000 died of the disease. For patients diagnosed before the cancer has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 93 percent (relative survival measures survival of cancer only, independent of other causes of death). But ovarian cancer is insidious?early symptoms, like bloating, abdominal pain, and trouble eating, are typical of many illnesses and easily dismissed as non-threatening. Women often do not learn they have the disease until it's already spread. In 62 percent of new cases, the patient's cancer has metastasized to distant sites, and the five-year survival rate is just under 27 percent.

Bevacizumab is already FDA-approved for use against some types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers; its accelerated approval for metastatic breast cancer was recently revoked by the FDA. The drug acts by binding with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein produced by certain cancers that helps initiate the growth of new blood vessels that feed the tumor. The process of growing new blood vessels is called angiogenesis, and bevacizumab is an angiogenesis inhibitor.

"Bevacizumab blocks the growth factor VEGF, which is important in the process of ovarian cancer progression," says Burger, "and we've seen that this drug is also active in patients with recurrent disease."

Angiogenesis happens at the interface between the host and the disease, which makes it an appealing target for treatment, says Burger, who also led the Phase II GOG study on using bevacizumab in women with recurrent ovarian cancer. He says different ovarian cancers may appear identical under the microscope but differ biologically, which means they'll respond differently to treatment.

In the NEJM paper, Burger and his co-authors point out that another ovarian cancer trial conducted primarily in Europe called ICON7 demonstrated positive results in using becavizumab in combination with chemotherapy and then continued for up to 7 months.

Cops: Dad planned massacre in Santa suit

By NBCDFW.com

A father dressed as Santa?Claus arrived to his family's Christmas party with two guns, executed his entire family and then killed himself -- and planned the entire thing, police said Tuesday.

Police believe the Christmas Day massacre in Grapevine, Texas, which left seven people dead still surrounded by Christmas presents and wrapping paper, was premeditated, Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Grapevine police officially released the name of the gunman and his?victims.

Police confirm what family friends said Monday, that Azizolah "Bob" Yazdanpanah, 56, fired the fatal shots in the murder-suicide.

Grapevine police identified the victims as his wife, Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati, 55; their daughter, Nargis "Nona" Yazdanpanah, 19; and their son, Ali Yazdanpanah, 14. Nasrin's sister, Zohreh Rahmati, 58; her husband, Mohamad Hossein Zarei, 59; and their daughter, Sahra Fatemah Zarei, 22; were also killed, police confirmed.

See video, read the original story at NBCDFW.com

Police received a 911 call from an apartment in the 2500 block of Hall Johnson Road on Christmas morning. When officers arrived, they found the door locked from the inside, and the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Police recovered two weapons on the scene -- a Smith and Wesson 915 model 9 mm pistol with a 15-round magazine, and a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol with a 10-round clip, according to Eberling.

Both guns were used in the murder-suicide, but Eberling would not say how many shots were fired; only saying that there were still bullets in both guns.

Last year, a bank foreclosed on Bob Yazdanpanah's house, and he separated from his wife in the March.

Police had previously said a text message prior to the shooting indicated Bob Yazdanpanah was probably invited to the party, but police on Tuesday afternoon changed their story.

Police now say Bob Yazdanpanah apparently was not invited.

At 11:16 a.m., one of the victims sent a text message to a friend indicating who was at the gathering at the apartment. The text message mentioned the gunman's name and that he was dressed as Santa. Police said there was no indication of fear or concern in the text.

Eighteen minutes later, someone placed a call to 911 from a landline inside the apartment.? Investigators could make out a muffled cry for help in the background, Eberling said.

All of the victims were found in the same room with no sign of a struggle, according to Eberling, but he said some of the victims had defensive wounds that indicate they tried to shield themselves from the bullets.

Police will wait for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner to release the identities of the victims,? Eberling said.

The gunman had some prior dealings with at least two other police departments but not Grapevine Police, according to Eberling. He did not say what kind of dealings, or when or how many incidents there were.

Investigators are still piecing together information, but Eberling said they aren't sure of a motive and may never know what led to the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Friends paint picture of loving family in turmoil
Yazdanpanah married Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati in 1987, according to court records. They had a daughter, Nargis "Nona," 19, who graduated from Colleyville Heritage High School in May and a son, Ali, 15, a high school freshman. All four are believed to be among the dead.

Neighbors say the family seemed tight-knit, and Aziz Yazdanpanah seemed protective of his children.

"He was pretty outgoing," said neighbor Fred Ditmars. "If you saw him, he'd say 'hi' to you and everything."

"It seemed like their whole existence was about family, so it's utterly shocking to me," said another neighbor, Terri Baum, whose daughter attended school with his daughter.

A close friend of the Yazdanpanah family said Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati's sister Zohreh, her husband Hossein Zarei and their 22-year-old daughter Sahra were also killed.

Sahra (pictured left in blue) was a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Arlington, and according to family friends she was a part of the Tri Delta sorority at UTA.

"Bob loved his kids. And I can't even fathom that that's what happened," Baum said.

The mother, Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati, worked the past four years doing manicures at a salon on Southlake's town square. The manager said she often talked about her family, but never in a bad way.

Police cautioned the investigation is far from over.

Chile daily must pay readers for exploding churros

(AP) ? Chile's Supreme Court has ordered a newspaper to pay $125,000 to 13 people who suffered burns while trying out a published recipe for churros, a popular Latin American snack of dough fried in hot oil.

The publisher of La Tercera must pay individual damages to 11 women and two men ranging from as little as $279 to $48,000 for one woman whose burns were particularly severe.

The high court's ruling was announced Monday, seven years after the readers burned themselves while trying out the recipe.

Judges determined that the newspaper failed to fully test it before publication, and that if readers followed the recipe exactly, the churros had a good chance of exploding once the oil reached the suggested temperature. Grupo Copesa, which publishes the paper, said it will abide by the ruling.

Days after the recipe was published in the paper's "Woman" magazine in 2004, hospitals around the country began treating women for burns suffered when the dough boiling in oil suddenly shot out of kitchen pots.

GoDaddy Officially Removed From The House?s List Of SOPA Supporters

gdjkWhen GoDaddy publicly recanted their support of SOPA last week, many were quick to point out that such an act didn't really mean much. As far as the Judiciary Committee overseeing SOPA was concerned, GoDaddy was still a supporter. That's been changed, it seems. In the latest version of the US House Of Representatives' SOPA Supporters list (heads up: it's a PDF), GoDaddy's name is nowhere to be found.

Everything You Need to Know about George Washington and Camels

ALEXANDRIA, VA. - Historians know that George Washington paid to see exotic and rare animals throughout his life, including a lioness and a tiger. And the Holidays were a jovial time for the first President.

Christmas at Mount Vernon Estate back in the 18th century was typically a low key affair, Dean Norton, director of Horticulture at the first president's estate, told CNN's Sally Holland last week:

"It was just all a matter of family being together to enjoy good food, good drink, good family time. And certainly when you add a camel to the mix, it adds a little bit of specialness to the whole atmosphere," he said. ?

Whooahh. A camel?

According to Washington's ledger, Holland reports: "he paid 18 schillings, a pretty hefty amount for that time, to "the man who brot. A Camel from Alex. for a show" on December 29, 1787.

"During his presidency, he paid to see a cougar, a sea leopard, which is kind of like a sea lion, an elephant, and three dollars to see a very smart dog who apparently could beat anybody at this particular card game," according to Norton.

He spent the equivalent of $1.75 to see the elephant during his presidency and was so impressed that several months later he went back with the whole family.

But as to the reason he brought a camel to Mount Vernon that Christmas, no one really knows.

It's possible that he heard that the camel was being shown in Alexandria and he asked if the owner or handler would bring it to Mount Vernon. At the time, entrepreneurs would acquire rare or exotic animals and travel around with them charging the populace to see the animal.

Then again, the camel's owner or handler may have found out that George Washington lived down the road and may have visited Mount Vernon hoping that the ex-president would pay to see the camel.

Regardless, it wasn't cheap.

"If I were the gardener at that time in 1787, I would have been making 20 pounds a year, so it would have come out to about 400 schillings, so it would be half a weeks salary for me for me to pay to see a camel and I certainly wouldn't do that today," said Norton.

Mount Vernon historians estimate that Washington paid enough for 24 adults, or 48 children to see the camel at the going rates for that time.

In honor of that Christmas in 1787, visitors to Mount Vernon during the Christmas season can see and pet a dromedary, or a one humped camel, named Aladdin."

'Shameless' Moment: Frank Gallagher's Inappropriate Confession (VIDEO)

The first season of Showtime's "Shameless" was full of memorable Frank Gallagher moments, despite (or because of) the fact that few of them showed the inebriated father of six in an especially good light.

Still, no matter how selfish, drunk or scheming Frank was at any moment,William H. Macy's performance always made the sozzled Chicagoan worth watching.

In this exclusive clip from the Season 1 DVD set of "Shameless," which goes on sale Dec. 27, we get yet another example of Frank's boundary issues. Most of us wouldn't go into graphic detail about our sins and faults while sitting in a church pew, but Frank doesn't have a problem with that.

"Shameless," which also stars Emmy Rossum and Joan Cusack, returns to Showtime Jan. 8. Keep up with Huffington Post TV for news and interviews about the comedically-inflected drama, and for an assessment of how the American adaptation of the British show of the same name has progressed in its second season.

Authorities: 3 Americans among Mexico victims

By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 2:09 PM EST, Sat December 24, 2011

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Seven people were killed in a highway attack this week
  • Three of the victims are identified as Americans

(CNN) -- Three of the seven victims of a highway attack this week in the Mexican state of Veracruz were American citizens, officials said.

A mother and her two daughters, dual Mexican-U.S. citizens who lived in Fort Worth, Texas, were aboard one of three buses that were attacked by gunmen in the city of Panuco, in the northern part of Veracruz.

"We express our deepest condolences to their family and friends during this difficult time," State Department spokeswoman Neda Brown said.

A Mexican official in the state of Hidalgo, the hometown of the mother, identified the Americans as Maria Sanchez Hernandez and her two daughters, Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13.

The buses were on a road between the towns of Tempoal and Panuco near the border of Veracruz and Tamaulipas, Mexican and U.S. government officials said.

An American consulate general statement warned American citizens to "exercise caution and remain vigilant when traveling in the state of Veracruz. American citizens residing in, visiting or traveling through the northern portion of Veracruz that borders Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi should maintain a heightened sense of alert." Inter-city road travel at night should be avoided, the consulate general said.

CNN's Mariano Castillo and CNNMexico.com contributed to this report.

Cardinal Francis George Backtracks On Comparing Gay Community To KKK ? Sort Of

Cardinal Francis George has expanded on his remark comparing gay rights activists to the Ku Klux Klan.

George, the head of the Catholic Conference of Illinois and the Archbishop of Chicago, is under fire for saying during a Fox Chicago interview that he believes a Gay Pride parade route in Chicago should be altered to avoid passing in front of Our Lady of Mount Carmel's front doors.

?I go with the pastor,? George said. ?He's telling us that he won't be able to have services on Sunday if that's the case. You don't want the gay liberation movement morph into something like the Klu Klux Klan, demonstrating in the streets against Catholicism.?

George defended his stance when the host called it ?a little strong.?

?It is, but you take a look at the rhetoric. The rhetoric of the Klu Klux Klan, the rhetoric of some of the gay liberation people. Who is the enemy? Who is the enemy? The Catholic Church.?

In an interview on Christmas Day, George softened his remarks.

?Obviously, it's absurd to say the gay and lesbian community are the Ku Klux Klan,? he told ABC 7. ?But if you organize a parade that looks like parades that we've had in our past because it stops us from worshiping God, well then that's the comparison. But it's not with people and people ? it's parade-parade.? (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

PFT: For four teams, it's win and get in

Tom BradyAP

Eighteen games remain in the 2011 NFL season: Bears-Packers tonight, Falcons-Saints tomorrow and 16 games on New Year?s Day. Here?s a rundown of how each team still in contention can have its playoff position affected by the results of those 18 games:

Patriots: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating Buffalo or by having both the Ravens and Steelers lose.

Ravens: Clinch the AFC North and a first-round bye with a win or a Steelers loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win and a Patriots loss.

Steelers: Clinch the AFC North with a win and a Ravens loss. Clinch home-field advantage with a win, a Ravens loss and a Patriots loss.

Texans: Locked into the AFC No. 3 seed. Week 17 is meaningless to Houston, and the Texans may rest many of their key players.

Broncos: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chiefs, or a Raiders loss.

Raiders: Clinch the AFC West and the No. 4 seed by beating the Chargers and a Broncos loss. If the Broncos win, the Raiders can still get a wild card if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Titans lose or the Jets win.

Bengals: Clinch a playoff spot and the No. 6 seed if they win, or if the Jets lose and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Jets: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals and Titans and either the Raiders or Broncos lose.

Titans: Get the No. 6 seed if they win and the Bengals lose, plus either the Jets win and the Broncos or Raiders lose, or the Jets lose and the Broncos and Raiders both win.

Packers: Clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs if they beat either the Bears tonight or the Lions next week, or if the 49ers lose next week.

49ers: Clinch a first-round bye with a win next week or the Saints losing either on Monday night or next week. The 49ers can still get home-field advantage throughout the playoffs if they win and the Packers lose to both the Bears and the Lions.

Saints: Clinch the NFC South if they win either of their two remaining games, and they could even clinch the NFC South if they lose both of their remaining games, if the Falcons lose in Week 17. The Saints can?t get home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, but they can get a first-round bye if they win both their remaining games and the 49ers lose next week.

Cowboys/Giants: Next Sunday night?s game is essentially a playoff game: The Cowboys-Giants winner wins the NFC East and is the No. 4 seed, while the loser?s season is over. If the game ends in a tie, the Giants win the division.

Falcons: The Falcons can clinch a playoff spot tonight by the Packers beating the Bears. They need just one more win or one more Chicago loss to get to the playoffs. They could still win the NFC South, but only if they beat the Saints Monday night and win next week, plus the Saints lose next week.

Lions: Detroit is an NFC wild card. Whether they?re the No. 5 or No. 6 seed depends on the results of their own game with the Packers and the Falcons? remaining games.

Bears: Chicago can still make the playoffs, but only if they win both their remaining games and the Falcons lose both their remaining games.

Kid band Vazquez Sounds takes Mexico by storm (AP)

vaz MEXICO CITY ? Ten-year-old Angie Vazquez has become an Internet phenom belting out a soulful cover of Brit pop star Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." In an online video seemingly shot at home, her teenage brothers Abelardo and Gustavo play the keyboard, guitar and drums.

The video drew almost 18 million views, interviews on Mexico's major television networks and a mention on Good Morning America. Within weeks of its Nov. 11 posting, the so-called Vazquez Sounds signed a contract with Sony Music Mexico. They released their first album this week that includes another Internet smash cover, of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."

Their nearly overnight success online evokes the now legendary saga of Canadian 'tween idol Justin Bieber, who was discovered after his mother posted online amateur footage of him crooning and strumming.

"We make a lot of videos of a lot of things, but my son Abelardo wanted to record this song and share it with friends and family," said father Abelardo Vazquez in a telephone interview from the family's hometown of Mexicali, on the California border. "We really didn't expect the cover to become such a phenomenon on the Web."

Before you call the Vazquez clan Mexico's version of Bieber-mania, consider this: The elder Abelardo Vazquez is a professional music producer instrumental in creating the sound of well-known Mexican bands such as Reik and Nikki Clan, also from the border.

The videos of Angie and her brothers in their home studio are also professionally produced, mixed and lighted, with slick camera work.

Abelardo Vazquez says he's not driving his kids into the music business, though he acknowledges they've had a leg up.

"My kids have had a musical education since they were very young, because I have worked producing groups for many years," the father said.

When the video sparked interest in a few million people beyond the Vazquez's immediate circle, the decision to cut a CD was natural, Vazquez said.

He added that he retains total control over the project, and Sony music is working as a distributor.

"The contract with Sony isn't the traditional type," Vazquez said. "It isn't the typical contract with record companies, in which they used to control the artists' career. This is a family project."

Although Vazquez has had an eight-year relationship with Sony, Roberto Lopez, president of the label, said he and his team were unaware of the Vazquez Sounds and first heard the group like everyone else ? on the Internet.

Working with such a young group poses special challenges and "very strong personal care," Lopez said.

"It is something special because they are children, and we want them to stay in school," he said. "The agreement was that their involvement in music, which has been going on for years now, would continue without affecting their lifestyle."

Vazquez said other record companies had expressed interest, but Sony was the only one that met his conditions for the kids. Cynics note that Sony is also the label that signed some of Vazquez's other acts.

The CD includes the original cover of "Rolling in the Deep," a remix of that crowd pleaser and, at least in its online version, a more wobbly cover of the Mariah Carey song. Coincidentally, it's the same song Bieber included in his holiday season "Under the Mistletoe" disc.

In the meantime, the Vazquez Sounds have been invited to perform on television programs in the United States, Italy and England.

But they can pick and choose.

"The kids are not obligated to do promotional work like other acts," said the elder Vazquez. "We want them to live a life like any other child their age."
