Benjamin Strauss: NYC's One-Inch Escape From Irene

New York City dodged a bullet with Irene, but big trouble passed more closely than most people think. If the storm surge had pushed New York Harbor about one inch higher, it could have been enough to overcome some of Lower Manhattan's outer defenses and flood the subway system, FDR Drive, PATH and the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, if history is a guide.

At 8:42 AM on Sunday morning, close to the peak of an unusually tall high tide, the water reached 4.8 feet above the average high tide level as measured by a gauge at the Battery. It was the sixth-highest level ever recorded for New York Harbor. The tallest mark came in 1821, at 6.5 feet. The most recent incident topping Irene was the December Nor'easter of 1992, which reached about one inch higher at the Battery and caused enough area flooding to shut down the entire subway system and PATH for several days. Unless the city has substantially raised its defenses, 4.8 feet put Irene in risky territory.

Lots of things could have tipped the balance this time, but didn't. If Irene had moved more quickly, or blown more fiercely. If she had arrived about 12 hours earlier, during a slightly higher tide. But perhaps the most important element shaping Irene's outcome was the year she blew in.

For more than a century, sea level has been creeping up, about 16 inches since the Civil War and still rising. If the great hurricane of 1821 had taken place today, it would have reached about 8 feet above the high tide line, obliterating all records and a lot of infrastructure.

If Irene were to repeat in 2021 instead of 2011, we could very likely be writing a different story -- because in 2021 the average sea level in New York Harbor will be an inch or so higher than it is today, assuming trends continue.

So why is sea level rising? Mostly because of global warming, which is heating and expanding ocean water, and collapsing glaciers and ice sheets. In New York, the land is also slowly sinking, a few inches per century.

Rising seas are a process well under way, not mere speculation. The New York State Sea Level Rise Task Force recently presented the legislature with metro area sea level rise projections of 7 to 29 inches by mid-century, and 12 to 55 inches by the 2080s. The range of possibilities is large due to uncertainty around how rapidly the great polar ice sheets will decay.

Sea level rise will amplify the impact of future hurricanes and Nor'easters. If we replay the 20th century but add an extra foot of sea level at the start (the extra foot we indeed started with in 2000, compared to 1900), about six events would produce higher water levels than the Nor'easter of 1992.

But this is a very conservative estimate, because it assumes that sea level will rise this century at the same pace it did last century -- when in fact we expect much more. If we crudely replay the 20th century but add an extra two feet of water at the start -- overestimating floods early on but underestimating them later -- we would see about 30 critical events.

This is how coastal places everywhere will experience sea level rise: previously rare floods will become common -- soon -- and the new rare floods will be outside of anyone's experience. It won't be a matter of just waking up one day to find the high tide at your doorstep.

New York City workers piled sandbags on and around subway grates and other vulnerable areas. If Irene had crept much higher, these measures might not have prevented major damage.

The big lessons from Irene: invest in more significant defenses, and get a handle on climate change. If not, we will be measuring our future woes in feet, not inches.

Lon's Article Directory ? The Effects of Zopiclone

Zopiclone, also known as Imovane, is a drug often intended as a ?less addictive? alternative to benzodiazepines. Zopiclone is a tranquiliser that depresses the Central Nervous System. Unfortunately, the body adapts to this tranquilisation and, as a result, can become addicted to the substance.

Zopiclone is a Schedule IV controlled substance in the United States under the Controlled Substances Act. It is part of a group called ?Z drugs?. It is intended for use as a sleep aid for those with insomnia, with additional anti-axiety effects through depression of the CNS. It effects short term memory and motor skills. A publication in the New Zealand Medical Journal referred to Zopiclone as ?a benzodiazepine in disguise?. A World Health Organization assessment of Zopiclone drew similarities between Zopiclone and Benzos in their chemical interactions with the CNS, their toxicity and their withdrawal effects.

Zopiclone can also cause changes in taste perception, hallucinations, nightmares, agitation, aggression, irritability, confusion, depression, nausea, vomiting, and an increase in respiratory viral infections.

Zopiclone dependence/addiction has been found to be prevalent among users who already have underlying issues of addiction (?a history of drug abuse?) or mental health problems like depression, leading to abuse by polydrugusers, which is extremely dangerous due to Zopiclone?s interaction with other drugs or alcohol. A Swedish study (Johansson et al. 2003) found that alcoholic patients were much more likely to be dependent on legal psychotropic drugs than their non-alcoholic counterparts.

Those who abuse the drug report that it provides a sense of euphoria (after a phase of ?fighting off? lethargy). Memory loss and loss of motorskills is common with high doses, with the potential for hallucinations.

Like other controlled substances, Zopiclone has medicinal benefits. However, the increasing frequency of its abuse is cause for attention, and it is important to raise awareness of its addictive potential. Zopiclone should only be used as prescribed.

Ban boxing for kids, says pediatric society - Welland Tribune ...

By GRANT LaFLECHE/QMI Agency

Posted 3 hours ago

ST. CATHARINES ? When his son Steven got in a fight at school, Pat Ryan decided he'd had enough. If the boy wanted to fight, he'd send him to a place where it was organized, supervised and where a kid could work off his frustrations safely.

That was more than a year ago. Today, 12-year-old Steven Ryan is a fixture at the St. Catharines Amateur Boxing Club on Niagara Street, hitting the pads and punching the heavy bags. He's had six fights in the ring and none on the playground.

"I think the benefits outweigh a few punches to the head," Pat Ryan said. "He is only 80 pounds and at this age, with the size of the gloves and the headgear, no one is getting hit hard anyway. But they train for two hours at a time, three or four days a week. It's good for him."

However, if Dr. Claire LeBlanc of the Canadian Paediatric Society has her way, Steven Ryan would never set foot in a boxing ring.

"Knowing what we know about head injuries, I would hope that parents and the kids themselves would think long and hard about participating in a sport where blows to the head are rewarded," said LeBanc Monday afternoon.

LeBlanc is the co-author of a statement on boxing made by the society and its U.S. counterpart, American Academy of Pediatrics, which says that youth should not participate in boxing.

"The CPS and AAP are calling on pediatricians and other health professionals to strongly discourage boxing participation among their patients and guide them toward alternative sport and recreational activities that do not encourage intentional head injuries," the report says.

Canadian and American boxing agencies do not track injuries of participants, but the report says based on hospital reports, amateur boxers are at serious risk of face and brain injuries, including concussions.

"Though amateur boxers wear safety gear, there is no evidence to show that head guards actually reduce the incidence of concussions."

The report notes, however, there are a greater number of injuries associated with other contact sports like hockey and football. However, LeBlanc said, the nature of pugilism itself is a cause for concern.

"Unlike in other sports like hockey or like football, boxing rewards blows to the head and face," she said. "In hockey and football, there are rules against doing that and you see in hockey right now a vigorous move to prevent headshots."

LeBlanc said that boxing decided nearly 200 years ago that some areas of the body were off limits. Punches to the groin, for instance, have been prohibited since 1838.

"So is boxing today saying the head is less important than the testicles?" she asked. "What we are saying is that they need to take the head out of it."

St. Catharines Amateur Boxing club manager Joe Corrigan said the pediatric society isn't seeing the big picture.

"Before anyone can compete, they have to have a medical done. The day of the fight, they are checked out again. If someone (gets a concussion), they are suspended so they can heal," Corrigan said. "None of that is happening in other sports. A kid can get smashed against the boards in hockey, get a concussion and they are right back on the ice the next period."

There are reasons, Corrigan said, why you find fewer injuries in boxing than in hockey or football.

"In boxing, you get two 14-year-olds competing that are about the same weight and experience," Corrigan said. "In hockey, you can get a 14-year-old who is the size of a full-grown man playing against a kid the same age who is really small."

Supporters of the sport point out that boxing builds character and is often the only sport kids from poor families can afford to participate in. Sports like hockey, which require hundreds of dollars in equipment and registration fees, are out of reach.

For LeBlanc, however, the social aspects to boxing are trumped by the potential for head trauma. Other sports, like tennis, basketball and swimming, can build fitness and character without requiring anyone to be struck in the head, the pediatric report says.

It's not an argument boxers find convincing.

"I love tennis. Tennis is a great sport. But I don't see a lot of tennis courts being built in the projects," said Terence Fowler, former professional boxer and owner of the Fight Fit gym on James Street. "Look, boxing has always been the poor man's sport. It's indisputable that boxing has saved a lot of kids from the destruction of poverty."

This doesn't mean boxing cannot improve, he said. The amount of sparring done by amateur boxers should be limited, Fowler said, and coaching needs to be improved to ensure kids learn how do to more than just throw punches.

"There is too much emphasis on offence. Not just in boxing but in lots of sports," he said. "Boxing is a craft and that means learning defence and it takes years to learn it. You never stop learning."

Pat Ryan admits that as a parent, watching the powerful punches of older kids and adults who box can be unnerving. But if it's something his son wants to do as he gets older, he'll allow it.

"People have been boxing for centuries and they have just legalized mixed martial arts in Ontario," Ryan said. "I'm looking at the benefits he gets out of it."

LeBlanc said she doesn't expect boxing to be banned in Canada or the United States based on the report. She does hope that if kids continue boxing, the governing bodies do more to track injuries, provide more comprehensive medical exams to protect fighters and build the kind of database than can be used to study the long-term impacts of boxing.

Census Data Reveals New Geography of Marriage for Americans

ANALYSIS??? AIR DATE: Aug. 29, 2011 SUMMARY

JEFFREY BROWN: And finally tonight, what a new wave of data about the geography of marriage tells us about the institution itself.

Ray Suarez has the story.

RAY SUAREZ: Among the newly-released studies is a first-of-its-kind Census Bureau analysis of marriage and divorce rates by region. the report, published last week, found that the South and West had the highest rates of divorce, while the Northeast ranked the lowest of the four regions.

At the same time, the number of unmarried Americans has reached a historic high, as the census also found that 30 percent of Americans have never been married, the largest percentage in the past 60 years. And yet another census snapshot released by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that same-sex couples have dispersed from urban enclaves to other parts of the country.

Joining us now to look at what all this may mean for the institution of marriage and its role in American life are David Blankenhorn, founder of the Institute for American Values, and Elaine Tyler May, professor of American studies and history at the University of Minnesota.

David Blankenhorn, are we in the midst of a redefinition of American marriage, why people get married, when they do it in their lives, even where they do it and what they think it?s for?

DAVID BLANKENHORN, Institute for American Values: yes.

I think the shift in broad terms is toward ? for marriage as an institution to marriage as a private relationship, an option for a private relationship. you know, in our parents and grandparents? generation, when you got married you were joining an institution that had authority, told you the rules. you were supposed to act in accord with its procedures.

Now the shift is toward private ordering. each individual couple defines the relationship for themselves. one way to think about it is, in an earlier day, the marriage vow defined the couple. And now it?s really the couple defining the marriage vow.

So, a great deal more flexibility, freedom of choice, a lot more constant change in the institution, but the essential shift is toward private ordering and away from institutional authority.

RAY SUAREZ: Professor May, you have been writing about marriage for decades. do you buy that definition, couples, rather than submitting themselves to established ideas, shaping marriage for themselves?

ELAINE TYLER MAY, University of Minnesota: well, I don?t think it?s that new, really, that couples have been shaping the institution of marriage.

I think what?s different is that people don?t need to marry anymore for the same reasons that they did in the past, and that there have always been changes in the patterns of marriage demography for the last 100 years or so, and longer ago than that.

You know, if we look 100 years ago, we also had a time when there was increased age at marriage and fewer people getting married, and a lot of people choosing just to remain single. And the birth rate was going down.

And what we see today is a very different kind of pattern. It?s a little more extreme in terms of the age at marriage and in terms of people choosing not to marry. but we have to think about all the changes that have happened in the society since then, women being able to work at jobs that they used to have no access to.

Divorce is not as stigmatized as it used to be. And, certainly, having sex outside of marriage or before marriage is not carrying the heavy taboo and the great danger that it did even 50 years ago. so, now we have birth control available and a lot fewer reasons for people to actually get married for ? as a result of cultural taboos or economic necessity.

So, Americans are marrying for love. And they really always have, but there have been other contingencies as well. And I think what we?re seeing now is, those other contingencies aren?t there and people are marrying because they want that sense of commitment, they want that sense of citizenship that marriage confers, and they want to express themselves as part of a couple that is committed to each other by love.

RAY SUAREZ: David Blankenhorn, when you look at these statistics, unprecedented numbers of people, well, in recent history reaching 30, 40 and 50 without ever having been married, not divorced, but without ever, ever having been married, large numbers of people choosing to have children inside unions that they make outside of marriage.

Are you saying that we?re in a new place, or do you accept Professor May?s idea that ? just sort of taking a snapshot for an institution that?s always changing?

DAVID BLANKENHORN: Well, the institution is always changing. That?s true.

But we are in the middle of a definable long-term shift away from the authority of the institution. the most fundamental sign of this, I think, in terms of social meaning is that, several generations ago, a majority of Americans said that, if you?re having trouble in your marriage, you should stay together for the sake of the children.

And now a majority of Americans say that you shouldn?t do that; that?s a bad idea. so, another ? a related issue is the, really, breaking of the link between marriage and childbearing. It used to be that you would never ? you know, having a child outside of marriage was frowned on by society. you really wanted to avoid that.

Now it?s perfectly acceptable among many Americans. so this shift away from the institutional authority of marriage is, I think, the profoundest consequences have to do with the living arrangements of children, but it has to do also with just a new way that we?re thinking about what it means to be married.

RAY SUAREZ: Professor May, a lot of the new data has to do with where things are happening, gay couples moving outside of famed enclaves to suburban collar counties, the marriage statistics coming in from the South and West showing persistently higher rates of divorce than in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic.

Talk a little bit about what you see when you look at a map of America.

ELAINE TYLER MAY: Well, I think what we see is what we have always seen.

And that is that, when people are in economic distress, they?re much more likely to face marital tensions and much more likely to divorce. And we have large numbers of people in poverty and in stressful economic situations in the South and the West, more so than in the Northeast. And I think that explains a lot of what we?re seeing here.

I think what we have to watch out for is the notion of cause and effect. And you often hear that, when people have marriages that fall apart, that is a cause of poverty. well, it is for women and children, for sure, because they have a harder time supporting themselves, but the fact is that it?s poverty itself and economic stress that causes divorce in the first place.

And that?s why I think we?re seeing more of it in these areas where there are greater concentrations of people who are struggling. now, as far as gay couples are concerned, I think it?s clear that, as the country has become more gay-friendly all over, that gay people have felt that it was OK to live wherever they wanted to and be accepted.

And that wasn?t always true. If we look back only 50 years ago, a time of intense and official homophobia, where gay people were thrown out of their jobs and stigmatized as being unnatural and perverts and other horrible words like that, of course they were going to gravitate to centers of gay life, where they could feel comfortable. but that has all changed.

RAY SUAREZ: Let me go back to David Blankenhorn for a response.

What do you see happening geographically with American marriage, both in divorce and gay households?

DAVID BLANKENHORN: I agree with what Professor May says.

I would add to the issue of more poverty in the high divorce states, you also have younger people, people with lower levels of education and higher rates of geographical mobility. And all of those factors, plus low-income correlates, with more family instability.

So ? and I agree on the issue of the sort of mainstreaming, you know, the acceptance of gay and lesbian people, gay and lesbian relationships, and the sort of breaking up of the enclaves. Gay and lesbian people now can live anywhere they want to live. And I think that?s what we?re seeing in these numbers.

RAY SUAREZ: David Blankenhorn, Professor May, thank you both.

ELAINE TYLER MAY: Thank you.

DAVID BLANKENHORN: Thank you.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute leads the project Satellite Application Facility on Ozone and Atmospheric Monitoring. A total of 11 European research centres from seven countries participate in the project. The agreement between the Finnish Meteorological Institute and EUMETSAT was signed on 29 June. The agreements for the rest of the SAFs will be signed later in autumn. In these other projects, the Finnish Meteorological Institute serves as a partner.

Better observations of the atmosphere, albedo and snow During the next five years, the O3M SAF project led by the Finnish Meteorological Institute will concentrate on data produced by the GOME-2 and IASI instruments on board the Metop satellites of EUMETSAT. The instruments provide data on the chemistry of the atmosphere, such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and aerosols. With respect to atmospheric research, these products are closely linked with the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) programme of the EU.

The products are used, for instance, in climate change research, in monitoring emissions from volcanoes and forest fires, and in following anthropogenic changes in the atmosphere. The project develops software and systems for the processing of data, it processes and archives measurement results and it distributes these to users. One of the two archiving centres is located in Finland, at the Arctic Research Centre in Sodankyl.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute's participation in another project, the Satellite Application Facility on Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management, has also been confirmed. The project provides products for instance, on precipitation, soil moisture and snow almost daily for scientists and industry. The Finnish Meteorological Institute leads operational production and product development in the snow cluster. The data produced pertain to snow detection, snow status, effective snow cover and snow water equivalent. The products can be utilised, for instance, as input for weather and climate models, in making hydrological forecasts, and in the management of power plant capacity. In addition, the Institute participates in assessing the accuracy of the project's other products. The processing and archiving of the Institute's snow products are concentrated in Sodankyl.

The Institute also continues to develop surface albedo products in the Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring project of EUMETSAT. Albedo is one of the important quantities used by climate models to describe the Earth's energy balance. So far, the Finnish Meteorological Institute has produced the first global albedo time series covering a period of 30 years and has developed a surface albedo estimation method based solely on microwaves for the Arctic sea area. Changes in the albedo of the Arctic sea area have a strong impact on climate change. The situation cannot be monitored well by means of optical satellites alone because the view is obstructed by heavy clouds and the Sun is low on the horizon.

Israel "could not stop" nuclear Iran with one strike (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Israel would not be able to halt Iran's reported quest for atomic weapons with a single strike, a senior Israeli defense official said on Sunday.

Israel and the West suspect Iran is trying to use its nuclear program to develop atomic weapons, a charge denied by Tehran which says it wants to generate electricity.

Both Israel and the United States have hinted they might consider taking military action as a last resort to stop Iran getting the bomb.

The defense official, who in line with Israeli army guidelines declined to be identified, mentioned Iran during a review of the security situation in the Middle East in a briefing to foreign reporters.

"We're not talking about Iraq or Syria where one strike would derail a program," the official said, referring to Israel's 1981 air strike that destroyed Iraq's atomic reactor and the bombing in 2007 of a Syrian site which the U.N. atomic agency said was very likely a nuclear reactor.

"With Iran it's a different project. There is no one silver bullet you can hit and that's over," the official said.

Israeli leaders have urged the United States and other Western countries to present Tehran with a credible military threat to back up economic sanctions already in place.

The official said the United States stood a better chance of forcing Iran to change its mind over its nuclear program than Israel.

"With all respect to Israel ... the greatest fear of the (Iranian) regime is the USA. There is no question about it."

Some analysts say the likelihood of an imminent Israeli war with Iran has ebbed, thanks to the perceived success of political pressure on Tehran.

Recent Israeli estimates do not show Iran developing nuclear weapons before 2015.

Israel is widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, and Iran has accused it of hypocrisy over the issue.

Home Renovation From the Flooring to the Roof : : Home Improvement

Most people divide the vast majority of their time between the office and their residence. The amount of time spent at home goes up even more for people who work via the internet. Creating an environment that you feel comfortable in can go a long way towards dealing with stress and increasing happiness. Enhancing your place via home improvement projects not only makes sense now, but also adds value to the property to support long-term financial health.

Chances are that most people would change aspects of their houses, but projects are frequently postponed. Common excuses for putting off plans include thinking that you might want to move at some point or that you need to save for other expenses. Yet time flies by and years might pass without anything happening at your place. Where you live can affect your mood and even your lifestyle. If you like entertaining but do not have space, for example, months or even years could go by without hosting dinner parties or other social events. Because of the importance of a house, therefore, any home improvement project you decide to do should be valued as an investment in quality of life for your entire household.

Big ideas can seem intimidating to implement but they always offer big results in return. Flooring, for example, makes a huge difference in terms of the overall vibe in any given room. Area rugs are great solutions if want to make a small difference, but installing new carpet or switching to hardwood will transform your living spaces. Hardwood floors in the living room or new tiles in the kitchen can also facilitate maintenance, as they are generally easier to keep clean than carpeting. Such solutions also reduce the amount of dust that build-up, which is great for anyone who is allergic.

Another option for deciding what to do first is to start from the top and work your way down. The idea of replacing the roof seems like a big deal so many households put it off for years. Yet as a rooftop ages, parts of your interior could be left vulnerable. Perhaps you start noticing cracks in the ceiling because of moisture or even brown spots forming in corners near the exterior. These are all signs that your roof is in need of replacement. There are quite a few companies these days that make the change headache-free, doing the work quickly so that your daily routine is barely affected. Giving a makeover to you rooftop will also beautify the overall appearance of your house, while selecting a new tone for the shingles will make the transformation complete.

As an added benefit for many home repair projects, the federal government has set up multiple tax break programs. These support owners who want to make their residences greener and reduce their energy use. Some roofing options are even included because of their effects on insulation. If you are interested in making a big change in sustainability, you could check out solar panels for your rooftop as well. The choices in home renovation are limitless, whether you decide to start from the bottom or work your way down from the top.

Michael Mann Vindicated (Again) Over Climategate

An anonymous reader writes "Michael Mann, a climatologist at Pennsylvania State University, was one of the central figures involved in the 'Climategate' controversy, which saw many private email conversations between researchers posted publicly. Now, an investigation (PDF) by the National Science Foundation has found "no basis to conclude that the emails were evidence of research misconduct or that they pointed to such evidence." Phil Plait points out that other investigations have found similarly that claims of Mann's misconduct took his statements out of context. 'A big claim by the deniers is that researchers were using "tricks" to falsify conclusions about global warming, but the NSF report is pretty clear that's not true. The most damning thing the investigators could muster was that there was "some concern" over the statistical methods used, but that's not scandalous at all; there's always some argument in science over methodology. The vague language of the report there indicates to me this isn't a big deal, or else they would've been specific. The big point is that the data were not faked.'"

AP-GfK poll: Views on economy, Obama role sour (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Americans' views on the economy have dimmed this summer. But so far, the growing pessimism doesn't seem to be taking a toll on President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.

More people now believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows, and confidence in Obama's handling of the economy has slipped from just a few months ago, notably among fellow Democrats.

The survey found that 86 percent of adults see the economy as "poor," up from 80 percent in June. About half ? 49 percent ? said it worsened just in the past month. Only 27 percent responded that way in the June survey.

That can't be good news for a president revving up his re-election campaign. Yet there are several hopeful signs for Obama.

Despite the perception of a weakening recovery, there has been no significant change in the number of people who say he deserves re-election: 47 percent as opposed to 48 percent two months ago. That's a statistical dead heat with those who favor a change in the White House.

And more Americans still blame former President George W. Bush rather than Obama for the economic distress. Some 31 percent put the bulk of the blame on Obama, while 51 percent point to his Republican predecessor.

"I think Bush had a hand in it, too. Obama's not totally responsible," said Mary Parish, 68, of Troy, Tenn. An independent who voted for Republican John McCain in 2008, she said she doesn't believe Obama has what it takes to heal the economy. "He's a smooth-talking man. But he does not know what he's doing."

Obama also fares better than Congress in the blame department. Some 44 percent put "a lot" or "most" of the blame on Republicans while 36 percent point to congressional Democrats.

The gloomy economic outlook reflected in the poll, which was taken Aug. 18-22, follows a round of bleak government economic reports ? on unemployment, the housing market and economic growth that fell below 1 percent for the first six months of the year. It was taken amid heightened worries of a new U.S. recession, fallout from a downgrade of the country's credit rating and a spreading European debt crisis.

As the public's outlook on the economy dips, so has approval for the president's economic stewardship.

More than 6 in 10 ? 63 percent ? disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy. Nearly half, or 48 percent, "strongly" disapproved. Approval of his economic performance now stands at just 36 percent, his worst approval rating on the issue in AP-GfK polling.

Among Democrats, 58 percent approve of the president's handling of the economy, down from 65 percent in June. Among Republicans, approval dipped to 9 percent from 15 percent.

Just 51 percent consider Obama a strong leader, down from 60 percent in June and 65 percent following the capture and death of Osama bin Laden in May. In June, 85 percent of Democrats in the poll called him a strong leader. Now, the number is down to 76 percent.

Of course, there are limits to what a president can do.

"I think he can nudge it along, but really, it boils down to the private sector," said Dan Elliott, 42, of Hillsboro, Ill., an independent who voted for Obama in 2008 and says he'll probably vote for him again.

Judith Lee, 63, a retired teacher from Great Diamond Island, Maine, said she's a Republican who voted for Obama in 2008 but has been disappointed by his leadership style.

"I don't think he is a very forceful leader," Lee said. "His style of leadership seems to be to look for consensus and ideas from other people, and it seems to have been ineffective. And Congress seems to be deadlocked on problems."

Some 75 percent in the poll said the country is heading in the wrong direction, up from 63 percent in June. Among Democrats, 61 percent chose "wrong direction" ? up from 46 percent in June.

And for the first time for Obama in the poll, a majority of all adults said they disapprove of his overall performance ? 52 percent, up from 47 percent in June. Among Democrats, approval fell 8 points, to 74 percent from 82 percent in June. Among Republicans, it fell to 11 percent from 22 percent.

Politically, the poll underscores the difficult time ahead for Obama as he seeks re-election in a shaky economy.

Unemployment increased to 9.2 percent in July, up from 9.1 percent in June. And most economists don't expect it to decline much below 8.5 percent by the November 2012 presidential election. No president has won re-election with a jobless rate that high since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936.

So why hasn't the rise in pessimism taken more of a toll?

Despite the general rise in gloom, it seems unlikely that liberal Democrats will flock away from Obama even if they have rising doubts about his agenda or economic leadership, analysts suggest. And independents, who helped elect Obama in 2008 and are now being actively wooed by both parties, did not exhibit significant changes in their approval levels.

It was at 44 percent, statistically no different from the 43 percent approval rating among independents in June.

"A lot is out of his hands," said Penny Johansen, 65, a retired legal secretary from Tempe, Ariz. "There is only so much one person can do, and one person cannot be blamed for the acts of others." Politically unaligned, she voted for Obama in 2008 and says she'll probably do so again.

On related economic issues, 59 percent said they disapproved of Obama's handling of tax issues, up from 53 percent in June. And 64 percent said they disapproved of his handling of the annual budget deficit, compared with 63 percent in June.

Sixty percent described the financial situation in their own households as "good," about even with the level in June. Asked if they expected their financial situation to change over the next 12 months, 31 percent said they expected it to get better, 12 percent expected it to get worse and a majority ? 56 percent ? said they expected it to "stay about the same."

As to creating jobs, some 44 percent said they would trust Democrats to do a better job, while 42 percent said Republicans would.

The AP-GfK poll was conducted Aug. 18-22 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

Foot tattoos for women are a great choice for someone looking to ...

Chinese Flock to Free Lectures on Happiness, Justice (Time.com)

When NetEase, one of China's most popular Internet portals, started offering Open University?style lectures in English last October, it expected eager Chinese netizens to flock to seminars like Web 2.0 Marketing Communications and Introduction to Robotics. They flocked, but not to those classes. Instead, two more-contemplative courses - one on happiness, the other on justice - trumped all others. "We never imagined that the most successful topics would be those to do with people's hearts and minds," says NetEase's Yang Jing.

About 3 million people have already watched the course on the concept of justice, led by Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel, author of Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? In his lectures, Sandel aims to challenge ingrained ideas of ethics by debating questions such as whether it is fair for a store to increase the price of water after a natural disaster, or whether it is right to lie to protect a family member. (See pictures of China celebrating 90 years of communism.)

Sandel believes that the popularity of his course reflects an awakening of ethical reflection and debate in China as the children of the country's boom years reach maturity. "The generation that came of age during China's economic miracle now wants to engage with big questions - about moral responsibility, about justice and injustice, about the meaning of the good life," he says.

China, Sandel argues, is justifiably proud of its impressive economic advances, but "there is also a recognition that rising affluence has brought growing inequality, that GDP alone does not bring happiness, and that markets can't, by themselves, create a just society." When Sandel toured Chinese universities recently, students queued for hours to get a seat in his lectures and he says he was "struck by the hunger, even passion, for discussion of justice, fairness, equality and inequality." (See portraits of Chinese workers.)

Psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar's course on positive psychology, the other unexpected hit on the NetEase site, has enjoyed a similarly fervid reaction. "The need for happiness - for meaning and pleasure - is universal, common to all people," says Ben-Shahar, author of the book Being Happy. "However, what people find meaningful or pleasurable often differs across different cultures."

In China, he notes, the individual focus on finding happiness reflects a societal focus on building a better society. "One of the ideas that I've often heard in my visits to China is the need to create a harmonious society," he says, referencing one of the oft-cited political catchphrases of the Hu Jintao administration. "To my mind, harmony is created by bringing together seemingly opposite forces and ideas. Harmony is about reconciling the ancient and the modern, the spiritual and the scientific, Eastern ideas and Western thought, the collective and the individual."

As China searches for that reconciliation, it's not just foreign proponents of the "good life" whose ideas are finding traction. Yu Dan, a professor at Beijing Normal University, has become a household name across the country on the back of her best-selling series of books explaining the applications of ancient philosophy in modern times. Her most famous book, Confucius from the Heart, aims to show how the often abstruse tenets of Confucianism can be simplified and still provide succor 2,500 years after they were first posited. The book has been a best seller since it was first published in 2007. (See pictures of the making of modern China.)

Like Sandel and Ben-Shahar, Yu believes that China's single-minded focus on economic growth in recent decades is now being tempered by a period of self-reflection and discussion about what the country - and its people - should define as important. "In the 21st century, Chinese people's thinking has undergone a big change," she says. "From the 1990s, people accumulated wealth very quickly, but now they ask themselves, Does satisfaction of being materially well-off mean that you are actually happy?"

"While improvements have been made on a national level, people are now starting to look for individual happiness - and they're looking both in traditional Chinese cultures and in Western cultures," Yu says. For Ben-Shahar, this newfound emphasis on personal awareness in China is not surprising. Some 2,500 years ago, Confucius himself noted that the examined life was the first step toward building a healthy society. "The individual and the group are interconnected, and emphasizing individual development is important for the flourishing of the group," says Ben-Shahar. Or in the words of Confucius:

The ancients who wished to illustrate illustrious virtue throughout the kingdom, first ordered well their own states. Wishing to order well their states, they first regulated their families. Wishing to regulate their families, they first cultivated their persons. Wishing to cultivate their persons, they first rectified their hearts. Wishing to rectify their hearts, they first sought to be sincere in their thoughts. Wishing to be sincere in their thoughts, they first extended to the utmost their knowledge.

Jailed for protecting the planet

A U.S. Park Police officer handcuffs and arrests a protestor over a proposed pipeline to bring tar sands oil to the U.S. from Canada, in front of the White House in Washington.

I didn't think it was possible, but my admiration for Martin Luther King, Jr., grew even stronger these past days.

As I headed to jail as part of the first wave of what is turning into the biggest civil disobedience action in the environmental movement for many years, I had the vague idea that I would write something. Not an epic like King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," but at least, you know, a blog post. Or a tweet.

But frankly, I wasn't up to it. The police, surprised by how many people turned out on the first day of two weeks of protests at the White House, decided to teach us a lesson. As they told our legal team, they wanted to deter anyone else from coming -- and so with our first crew they were... kind of harsh.

We spent three days in D.C.'s Central Cell Block, which is exactly as much fun as it sounds like it might be. You lie on a metal rack with no mattress or bedding and sweat in the high heat; the din is incessant; there's one baloney sandwich with a cup of water every 12 hours.

I didn't have a pencil -- they wouldn't even let me keep my wedding ring -- but more important, I didn't have the peace of mind to write something. It's only now, out 12 hours and with a good night's sleep under my belt, that I'm able to think straight. And so, as I said, I'll go to this weekend's big celebrations for the opening of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the Washington Mall with even more respect for his calm power.

Preacher, speaker, writer under fire, but also tactician. He really understood the power of nonviolence, a power we've experienced in the last few days. When the police cracked down on us, the publicity it produced cemented two of the main purposes of our protest:

First, it made Keystone XL -- the new, 1,700-mile-long pipeline we're trying to block that will vastly increase the flow of "dirty" tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico -- into a national issue. A few months ago, it was mainly people along the route of the prospective pipeline who were organizing against it. (And with good reason: tar sands mining has already wrecked huge swaths of native land in Alberta, and endangers farms, wild areas, and aquifers all along its prospective route.)

Now, however, people are coming to understand -- as we hoped our demonstrations would highlight -- that it poses a danger to the whole planet as well. After all, it's the Earth's second largest pool of carbon, and hence the second-largest potential source of global warming gases after the oil fields of Saudi Arabia. We've already plumbed those Saudi deserts. Now the question is: Will we do the same to the boreal forests of Canada. As NASA climatologist James Hansen has made all too clear, if we do so it's "essentially game over for the climate." That message is getting through. Witness the incredibly strong New York Times editorial opposing the building of the pipeline that I was handed on our release from jail.

Second, being arrested in front of the White House helped make it clearer that President Obama should be the focus of anti-pipeline activism. For once Congress isn't in the picture. The situation couldn't be simpler: The president, and the president alone, has the power either to sign the permit that would take the pipeline through the Midwest and down to Texas (with the usual set of disastrous oil spills to come) or block it.

Barack Obama has the power to stop it and no one in Congress or elsewhere can prevent him from doing so. That means -- and again, it couldn't be simpler -- that the Keystone XL decision is the biggest environmental test for him between now and the next election. If he decides to stand up to the power of big oil, it will send a jolt through his political base, reminding the presently discouraged exactly why they were so enthused in 2008.

That's why many of us were wearing our old campaign buttons when we went into the paddy wagon. We'd like to remember -- and like the White House to remember, too -- just why we knocked on all those doors.

But as Dr. King might have predicted, the message went deeper. As people gather in Washington for this weekend's dedication of his monument, most will be talking about him as a great orator, a great moral leader. And of course he was that, but it's easily forgotten what a great strategist he was as well, because he understood just how powerful a weapon nonviolence can be.

The police, who trust the logic of force, never quite seem to get this. When they arrested our group of 70 or so on the first day of our demonstrations, they decided to teach us a lesson by keeping us locked up extra long -- strong treatment for a group of people peacefully standing on a sidewalk.

No surprise, it didn't work. The next day an even bigger crowd showed up -- and now, there are throngs of people who have signed up to be arrested every day until the protests end on September 3rd. Not only that, a judge threw out the charges against our first group, and so the police have backed off. For the moment, anyway, they're not actually sending more protesters to jail, just booking and fining them.

And so the busload of ranchers coming from Nebraska, and the bio-fueled RV with the giant logo heading in from East Texas, and the flight of grandmothers arriving from Montana, and the tribal chiefs, and union leaders, and everyone else will keep pouring into D.C. We'll all, I imagine, stop and pay tribute to Dr. King before or after we get arrested; it's his lead, after all, that we're following.

Our part in the weekend's celebration is to act as a kind of living tribute. While people are up on the mall at the monument, we'll be in the front of the White House, wearing handcuffs, making clear that civil disobedience is not just history in America.

We may not be facing the same dangers Dr. King did, but we're getting some small sense of the kind of courage he and the rest of the civil rights movement had to display in their day -- the courage to put your body where your beliefs are. It feels good.
