Google boasts 500,000 Android activations per day (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Consumers are activating more than half a million Android devices every day, and week-to-week growth in gadgets running the Google Inc software is at 4.4 percent, according to Android chief Andy Rubin.

Rubin did not disclose, in his Tuesday announcement on Twitter, how many of the devices being activated are smartphones and how many are tablet computers, a relatively new competitive battleground in wireless communications.

On December 8, Rubin had tweeted that daily Android phone activations had surpassed 300,000.

Android smart phones have surpassed Apple Inc's iPhone in popularity as the Google software powers the main handsets of manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics Co, HTC Corp and Motorola Mobility.

These companies have also developed tablet computers based on the Android software to compete with Apple's market-leading iPad.

Food and drink usually play a huge role in a wedding reception, particularly if the bride and groom are anything like me and Paul. However, not everyone wants to go down the traditional route of a three course meal and tiered cake. Below are some of the food and drink ideas we are incorporating into our wedding celebrations in September. It?s making my mouth water just thinking about them?

Hog Roast

We knew from Day 1 of being engaged that we wanted a hog roast at the wedding. Paul is a huge fan of his meat, and we didn?t really want a traditional sit down dinner as it?s just not very us. We were much more interested in tracking down good meat for the main course than focussing on pudding.

However, I realise that there are a lot of people who do love cake, and we couldn?t have a wedding reception without some kind of dessert. So we are planning to have a cake table with a spread of different cakes and desserts, some bought and some homemade. I?ve already had offers from bridesmaids and family to make cake pops, lemon tart, chocolate brownies and tarte tatin, so I think there will be quite a feast!

Rock

I?d heard about people who had had personalised rock at their weddings (with their names written through it) and thought it was a fun idea. However, it turned out that getting rock personalised was ridiculously expensive, so I abandoned that plan and started looking for something cheaper but cute to give to sweet-toothed wedding guests. Smarth pointed to states like Georgia and North Carolina, which are slightly larger than New Jersey?s 8.6 million residents, but operate with budgets of at least 10 times the size of New Jersey?s. Georgia and North Carolina receive $3.1 million and $2.1 million, respectively, from their state legislatures.

Those states have cut back, according to small-business directors there, but only slightly during the last three years ? which stands in stark contrast to the volatile budget process New Jersey?s center has faced.

During state fiscal year 2007-08, the legislature allocated $1 million to the New Jersey SBDC budget, up from $500,000 the year before. But the next year, facing a massive budget deficit, former Gov. Jon Corzine, attempted to eliminate the entire $1 million budget, according to Smarth. The legislature ultimately negotiated with Corzine to restore $500,000, she said.

That budget eventually dropped to the current level.

Scott Daugherty, executive director for North Carolina?s small-business development center network, said his budget has been cut about $100,000 over the last three years, and is grateful for that, considering the economy.

?We?ve been very fortunate,? he said. ?[Government leaders] just perceive there to be an extraordinary amount of value back, in terms of jobs created and businesses supported.?

Daugherty?s counterpart in Georgia has had a similar experience.

?We are seeing a lot of attention for what we do, because policymakers are seeing the value of a diversified economic development strategy,? said Allan Adams, state director for the Georgia SBDC.

Centers also receive federal matching funds from the federal Small Business Administration, as well as outside donations, but the cuts in New Jersey have forced area small-business advocates to scale back on the aggressive training they would normally seek.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 1, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) ? Federal drug regulators are now reviewing studies that say some modern birth control pills may pose a serious risk of clots to women who take them.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Tuesday that they were conducting a safety review of birth control products containing drospirenone, a synthetic female sex hormone or progestin.

German pharmaceutical maker Bayer?s oral contraceptives Yaz, Yasmine, Safyral, Beyaz, and their generics are part of a chemical family of contraceptives containing drospirenone, and are among the oral contraceptives whose effects the FDA intends to review.

Bayer faces 7000 Yaz-related lawsuits from women who say the drug-manufacturer misrepresented the dangers associated with using the birth control pills ? side effects including stroke, cardiac arrest, blood clots, and gallbladder problems.

Bayer has marketed heavily its Yaz oral contraceptive products to teenagers and young adult women, saying its products were not just for preventing pregnancy, but also could treat PMS symptoms and acne.

One wrongful death lawsuit involves an 18-year-old new Jersey college student, Michelle Pfleger, who died of cardiac arrest after taking Yaz for acne treatment. a blood clot had lodged in her lungs resulting in her sudden death on her way to classes on September 24, 2010. her mother Joan Cummins filed suit against Bayer on may 10.

WHEREAS too many children end up in foster care when they could be placed with family members.

AND WHEREAS Grandparents are not automatically deemed parties to a child welfare proceeding or protection application.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario makes it their position to advocate for changes to the appropriate legislation which would make grandparents automatic parties to child protection proceedings so a judge can decide if they are more appropriate than a foster placement

WHEREAS some agencies have developed a list of Rights for their local foster parents.

AND WHEREAS these documents differ greatly, leaving foster homes without the rights afforded to other community sectors.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario advocate for a Provincial Foster Care Bill of Rights.

WHEREAS Foster Parents have adopted 58% of all children available for adoption in Canada, if agencies had specific money designated for adoption subsidies, this money would enable a greater number of children and youth with challenges to be adopted.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario advocate that the Ministry of Children and Youth services direct funds for the purposes of adoption subsidy.

WHEREAS foster parents should not be expected to cover treatment costs for a seriously injured child under their third party liability insurance due to a shortfall in the agency coverage.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario advocate that the Ministry of Child and Youth Services provide an insurance rider to agency insurance policies to cover contingencies or exceptions for foster children who are seriously injured.

WHEREAS the majority of youth in care find themselves turning 18, having not yet completed high school. This is due to trauma and some of the life experiences that foster children have faced in contrast to the general population as well as when their birthday falls within a calendar year. Lack of a high school diploma is the primary obstacle in the way of our children achieving a post secondary education.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will extend the foster home per diem for our youth in high school and post secondary institutions.

WHEREAS deaths sometimes occur of children under the protection of Children's Aid societies.

AND WHEREAS the public has no way now of learning even how many there are.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for an indepenant body to investigate any deaths related to foster care.

Child and Family Services Act

WHEREAS subsection 15 (6) of the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA) states ?No action shall be instituted against an officer or employee of a society for an act done in good faith in the execution or intended execution of the person?s duty or for an alleged neglect or default in the execution in good faith of the person?s duty.?

AND WHEREAS this provision of the CFSA creates too high a bar as a barrier for those attempting to hold accountable the officers or society employees for their wrongdoing

AND WHEREAS it is commonly expressed by child welfare clients that society employees often, if not regularly put false or misleading information in court documents and affidavits which can be contradicted by audio recordings made of meetings with society employees

AND WHEREAS this provision has the effect of protecting officers and society employees from liability once they have done wrong

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for the removal of subsection 15 (6) of the CFSA to eliminate the ?Good Faith? immunity from liability for officers and society employees

WHEREAS youth who are aged sixteen and seventeen who are not in the child welfare system are not able to be protected by CAS's because of their age

AND WHEREAS youth who are sixteen and seventeen years of age who are in care may wish to leave foster care before their 18th birthday

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate to increase the age of protection to 18 with the provision to allow sixteen and seventeen year olds to leave foster care if they so choose

WHEREAS life can be difficult for young people leaving the child welfare system.

AND WHEREAS youth sometimes realize they need assistance or support only after they have left foster care.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for an Open Door Policy which would allow youth of any age who have left the child welfare system to come back for services before their 25th birthday

WHEREAS often CAS employees do not provide full disclosure to those parties involved in child protection proceedings.

AND WHEREAS foster families, foster children, natural families, adoptive families, and adopted children are often left in the dark as to what is in their records for medical or court purposes.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate to make all foster care, medical, and other applicable records available to the relevant parties.

WHEREAS the CFSA does not currently define ?Medical Treatment? in it's definitions section

AND WHEREAS ?Medical Treatment? is used in the act but its interpretation is unfairly left up to the individual society employees

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for a clear definition of ?Medical Treatment?
Group Homes

WHEREAS clients are often told that the ministry is licensing the agency, to clean their rooms and be on their best behaviour,

AND WHEREAS agencies often do major last minute repairs in the homes.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for Mandatory Licensing Schedule

WHEREAS agency managers are granted a license each year based on rapport and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario recreate the licensing process to put emphasis on what clients have to say.

WHEREAS youth in care, their families and community advocates could advocate for improvements to the group homes they live in if their policy and procedure manuals were publicly available.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for making public an online database of group homes and their policy and procedure manuals

WHEREAS ministry licensees are over burdened, over worked and cannot license every home within the year.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for hiring at least 15 percent more group home licensing inspectors.

WHEREAS too often youth are physically restrained for improper reasons where harm is not imminent,

AND WHEREAS youth are often hurt and sometimes killed during physical restraints,

AND WHEREAS physical restraints do not encourage youth to learn to resolve problems without violence,

AND WHEREAS physical restraints are not permitted by natural family members as a form of discipline.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate for Ministry directives to group homes and foster homes to use "hands free" restraints or redirection and/or de-escalation techniques as opposed to physical restraints where ever possible.

MINISTRY

WHEREAS the ministry can make regulations behind closed doors and implement them while great effect on clients.

THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will make all regulations public and enforce a 30 day public comment period on proposed regulations.

WHEREAS youth are the future and filled with experiences from being impacted by the child welfare system.

THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario advocate to the Ministry of Children and Youth, for a Youth Engagement Committee.

WHEREAS the public does not get enough notice for every CFSA five year review and often misses the deadline for submissions.

THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario legislate that two months notice be given for every CFSA Review.

WHERAS the Child and Family Services Review Board (CFSRB) has no enforcement powers due to it being exempt from the Statutory Powers and Procedures Act

AND WHEREAS complaints about CAS staff and decisions should be heard by the courts

AND WHEREAS CAS staff will be more willing to resolve complaints earlier if knowing they will be faced with court action for wrongdoing.

THERFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate to abolish the CFSRB as soon as possible in order to let judges decided complaints about child welfare.

WHERAS CASs are privately incorporated non-profit corporations

AND WHEREAS the Ministry of Children and Youth Services often responds to complaints about wrongdoing by CAS by stating that they only have a ?monitoring role? over the agencies

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario will advocate to have the government take over CAS as is the case is most other provinces in Canada.

WHEREAS most courts dealing with criminal and civil matters are now open to public scrutiny, and family courts should be as well. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Socialist Party of Ontario end collusion between child protectors and psychiatrists and similar expert witnesses.

Bollywood to pay tribute to Michael Jackson (AFP)

TORONTO (AFP) ? Michael Jackson and his siblings watched Bollywood films every Saturday morning when they were young and were inspired by the glamour, Jermaine Jackson said Thursday.

"We were watching you from day one as we were on the journey to becoming The Jackson Five," he told a press conference at the opening of the Indian International Film Awards in Toronto.

"We loved the dance, the costumes, the entertainment, the set designs. That inspired us a great deal."

Jackson will perform his late brother's hits and sing with Indian pop singer Sonu Nigam at an IIFA concert on Friday to commemorate the second anniversary of Michael's death.

Clegg backs banks shares proposal

Proposals to give the public shares in part-nationalised banks RBS and Lloyds have been backed by Nick Clegg.

The idea is that individual taxpayers would benefit from any long-term gains when shares in the banks are sold.

The deputy prime minister said it was important British people were not overlooked after their money was used to keep the banking system alive.

The Treasury said all options would be considered but some experts have warned the scheme would be difficult to run.

Speaking on a trip to Brazil, Mr Clegg said: "Psychologically it is immensely important that the British people feel they have not just been overlooked and ignored.

"Their money has been used to the tune of billions to keep the British banking system on a life-support machine and they have absolutely no say at all in what happens when normality is restored.

"I think, in a sense, as a society we are condemned to take an interest in our banking system."

He added: "You are giving the Treasury an assurance that they will break even but you are not giving the Treasury the freedom to grab the windfall if there is one.

"This is something I have discussed a lot with [Business Secretary] Vince [Cable]. Vince and I feel it is something that we want officials to look at."

Liberal Democrat leader Mr Clegg admitted there remained "a huge amount of detail still to be worked on".

The idea for so-called people's shareholdings, first suggested in March, was developed by City firm Portman Capital with the support of the Lib Dems' Treasury Parliamentary Committee, chaired by backbencher Stephen Williams.

Mr Clegg has written to Chancellor George Osborne in support of the proposal.

Under the plan, the 45 million people on the electoral roll would be given free shares in the bailed-out banks, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group.

The shares would only have any value above a "floor price", equivalent to what the government paid for the holdings, so the Treasury could cover the cost of its investment.

That price is estimated at 74p per share for Lloyds and 51p for RBS.

A Treasury spokesman said: "While the question hasn't arisen at the moment, we've said we shall look at all options".

The taxpayer owns 83% of RBS and 41% of Lloyds after the government invested about £65.8bn in 2008 at the height of the banking crisis.
